Okey Dokey....
I have had a few big weekends in the shed.
Managed to get the trans hump in and welded.
Box, Tailshaft , handbrake, slave cylinder , new gearbox mount etc all in and hooked up.
The GTR tailshaft is about 20mm shorter than what i had hoped for but it will do nicely for now.
Fitted the carpet. Got the HK bucket seat back from the upholsterers. Bolted the pair of em back in the car and headed off for a test drive..... ummmm..... .. cant get reverse.....OOOOOh bugger.
Thinks... i fitted a new reversing switch.. perhaps its too long??
Remove the switch and back comes reverse gear...
Fit old broken switch and head off down the road
Man ... i should have done this conversion years ago...
5 th gear....35mph.... 1300 rpm
5th gear.......60 mph.....2400 rpm...
So... the overdrive has knocked the revs down by around 600 rpm .
Not a clunk.. rumble.. whine or rattle from the box. The whole time i was doing the conversion i was wandering what was inside the 5 speed mystery bag.. broken gears... buggered bearings. Turns out all my worrying was for nothing
Only issue now was the gear shift was too short and hit up against the left side of the drivers seat when i put it in reverse...
Off down the shed of invention with the shifter and out with the hot axe. slight bend to the left and straighter. All good but still had to reach down to change gears...
Enough for one day. Head for the beer fridge to figure out a longer gearstick...
6 beers later ( this is when i do my best work.. although i tend to loose more blood when swinging the spanners after having a few drinks ).
Out with the gearstick... find a mag wheel nut. slot the topof the nut.. fit new ( very old ) shifter extension. Bit of welding .. thread the gearstickshaft.. 1/2 " UNC...screw the lot together and bung it back in the top ofthe gearbucket and bingo,
One genuine WW2 303 rifle bayonet .gearshift.... ;D ;D ;D
Yet to make up some woodgrain/stained inserts for either side of the bayonet grab handle
Other problem was the carpet had to be cut to fit over the pregnant trans hump. So.. i now had a gap in the old loop pile.
Hmmm....
Back to the shed of invention and pluck old "Basil Brush"the fox skin off the wall.... "Come on Baz ya going for a ride".
Cut a hole behind his ears and insert bayonet.
Double sided tape around the pelt and slap him on the floor......
Warning animal conservationists might find this next picture upsetting ..... but Hey.. who cares.. Bazil has been dead fa years and he didnt feel a thing...
.
;D ;D ;D
He will give sterling service until oldmate the upholsterer can get a centre carpet made up for me.
Also had a bit of a victory on the windowless conversion front as well. Bro Jeff rolled up the other day with the 2 freshly painted ( sprayed ) plywood panels to fill in where the ambo windows use to live.
I had taken the glovebox lid to Bunnings and they had "Shot"it with a gadget in the paint shop that anylises the colour and prints out the tinting code.
So... i bought one litre and handed it to the bro
A bit of double sided sponge/tape and a few dozen 9mm X 8G self tappers.. a few dozen staino washers.. a few dozen nylon washers and bingo... El Cheapo window infills...
The colour doesnt match the left side of the van all that well ...and that is due to the boneheads that done the repair after that smash a few years ago not matching the existing colour .. honey beige.
So... right side looks much better than the left.
I can unscrew the panels when i get around to doing the rust and respraying the van
They are watertight at the moment but i will probably seal em after the respray with sikaflex.
Whats that you say... I am rough...
Why thank you .. your too kind...
Also had anopther project for the panno on the go while the gearbox conversion was happening.
I sent a set of HR discs off to a mate at a local brake service to have em overhauled. The van has perfectly good drums all around with new shoes and wheel cylinders being squished by a new booster.
But i had always planned to go to discs at some stage.
Turns out i needed new rotors. the caliper pistons where buggered, pads where worn.
So.. mate supplied new rotors.. new caliper pistons.. set of seals, new pads,, new wheel bearings.. new brake pipes.. recond my VH40 booster,... grand total $100...
Gotta be happy with that aye.... although i get the feeling i am about to be asked to wire in half a dozen ceiling fans or power points at his house... Thats OK... I know where his beer fridge is and i reckon i can break better than even by the end of the day....
Cheers fa now
