So...... there i was .. at the lights ... On the way to work... 5.30am.. Twiddle with the tuner and on comes.... "Shes my little duece coupe You dunno what i got.. So.. i start boppin away ta the music and up beside me comes a pimply faced adolecent in a 4 cylinder sneeze bucket... I give him a sideways glance and he starts "Cherrying "over the white line in anticpation of a flying start and blowin the old fart in the FB panno off the face of the earth.... Hmmff...Í know what ya thinkin young bonehead and ya will have ta get up early to outwitt this old knitwitt. I focus my attention back to the music and my mind drifts back to the seventies.... Twin carbs.. twin foxtails..lumpy cams... wide wheels... no brakes and a motor that went like stink... Yup... here i am... 21 again.. Ok young fella .. bring it on ;D ;D ;D Watch the opposing lights turn yellow.. check that there is no red light runners ..... build the revs... anticipate the change of lights ... look for any red light runners coming at me from the sides... dump the clutch and .... colour me gone.... The 18 year old zit farm in the turbo jobby is left standing and i judge the lights to perfection..... The old van is up and boogying in 1st gear..( About now i am praying that the frail, old 3 speed crash box will see me through this event ). I see the lanes merge ahead and i check the mirrors as i stuff the column change from 1st up to where second is usually found and then let the clutch out at about 4 thousand RPM.... Still holding half a car length and cranking the stereo up to drown out the now protesting cam followers and rocker gear.. Its about now there comes a noise from under the floor which very much sounds like 3 house bricks rolling around inside a rotating 44 gallon drum..... followed by a very distinct "BANG".. and a sudden lose of propullsion .. followed by a lot of gnashing of teeth.... Not from me.. from under the floor. Blinker on and glide to the gutter.. The song has finished and ... so has the forward momentum... OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooh....... bugga The hairy bummed kid gives me a big toot and a wave and dissapears into the half light of day... Suddenly.. i am 57 again... and the panno is hemmraging.. Try second.. bang .... ooops.. try 3rd.. Oooooooo it feels like there is a few teeth left on that cob of corn.... manage to limp it to work in time for a 6.00am start.... Kept reflecting on the incident all day... couldnt stop giggling... "You silly old bugger ..... what where you thinking. But hey.. i had him for the first 200 yards" Then.. Ooooooooooo Bugger,,,,, thats gearbox number 5 in 2 years.. its about time ya slowed down ya clown.... Then.. Whatami gunna do now.. ....Go find number 6 .. or face reality and bung in something that will handle the extra grunt of a good 186?? Something with 5 gears to destroy at the lights.. Managed to nurse the van home using a few bits of first and most of third gear.. The box had developed a sorta high pitched sqeal as i rounded the corner for home and i had the clutch covered waiting for the lock up and final death throws of the cogbox.. but no.. she got me home Got the box out da sarvo and had a look inside the lid ta see what i had achieved... Get it up so i can fit under it.. . Pull the offending apparatus out and open it up with a can opener.... Oooooooooooooooooooooo.. yukkkkkkkkk OK mr FB ... all finshed removing your teeth.. wash your mouth out and spit in the bowl when your ready..... PPPPPpppphhhhhttttttttttttttttttooooooiiiiiiiiiyyyyy Gurgle and swill.. pppppppppppppphhhhiiittttoooooiii... ooooooooooohhhh my gawd. look at all them teeth.... You really should brush more often.......or you copuld end up with gingervitous Curse you red p plater... Reddo

Hhmmm bad news Reddo , trouble now is trying to find a ''good '' crash box, as you'd know there just not around anymore, and parts are scarce . I was lucky recently when i picked up a ''condition unknown '' box ($120 ;D) when we did the engine swap............so far, so good. If and when that fails, i'll face your dillema - reckon a five speeds the go hey ;D....Cobber should be in bed now, so he won't know Hope ya get mobile soon mate Cheers Kingy

Hey reddo I sympathise. Bad luck. Wasn't going to admit this. Was doing racing type changes in the truck (just to prove a point) with just a bit of a load when coming onto the freeway and suddenly there was no more forward type momentum. Blew the clutch, too heavy for the Jeep to tow, so quite a bit of money and a big tilt tray later back home and new clutch on the way. But look at the positives ------ ummmm ---- ohh. Well get to play with the tools again i guess.
lotsa luck Don

Yo... Hey Kingy... The box that i had in the van is even scarcer than your "3 piece"gearbox. Its the old FX to EJ grey "Crashbox".. ie ...bellhousing and box all one casting. They are a fairly hardy old thing that can take a bit of punishment.... All of the boxes i have destroyed have been due to the change not being all the way up into second gear properly.and not completely deselcting first . Once they spit the selector back they usually damage the teeth on first gear as well as making a mess of second. Can also be due to poorly adjusted linkages causing a delay in pulling the selector out of first beforte starting to select 2nd. Ok if ya take your time ...but ... in this case i wasnt ( taking my time) . Have scouted the local rag and am test driving a recond Supra box which has done bugger all work behind a 253 V8 tomorrow arvo. Bellhoising will be of no use to me but the box with shifter and tailshaft ( will need the front yoke ) and is cheap enough at $200.00 Will probably just stick another 3 speed "grenade"behind the 186 while i chase up all the bits to do the conversion.... trans hump.... slave cylinder. throw out fork.. clutch .. spigot bush.. thrust race.. etc.. etc Chippydave.. will take up your offer on scouting for a Dellow or CRS bellhousing for a 6 cyl Holden to Toyota 5 speed at All Holden Swap mate. Will let ya know what bolt pattern 5 or 7 bolt .. the box is after i find out what model the g/box is .. W50.. etc.. etc. Cheers Reddo

So.... I order a recond gearbox from a company in Victoria. It takes just over 2 weeks to arrive in Newcastle. Just fitted and test drove the car. Verdict.. first and second gear is noiser than the box that was in the car ....before that box blew up... Not happy Jan. I will be having "Colourful Dialogue "with the proprietor tomorrow morning.... Hi Col After going through about 4 boxes that i have found laying around chook sheds... in a mates old FB in the backyard.... Try this one, it was running ok when i took it outta the old FC.. I decided that i woulod stick my hand in my pocket and buy a decent gearbox from a mob called.. Status engineering "down your way. They advertise all sorts of "recond"gearboxes on ebay. End result is a noisey box.. that decided to start spitting itself out of second on the way home from work today.. The car is up on blocks and when i am in a better mood i will remove it. Rang em today.. Very sorry mate.. we will send you another one ASAP. No we dont fit new gears.... they are unprocurable.....yes we do inspect the gears for wear when replacing bearings and seals... No mention as to when ASAP will be. But i suspect it will be another fortnight .. or.. now that they realise that they have an exchange on thier hands that they have to pay the frieght on as well as pay frieght to get another one up to me.... i am sorta thinking the fortnight might blow out to be a bit/lot longer. I imagine i would be wasting my time asking for a refund... Just have to play"Gearbox lotto "and hope the next one shapes up a lot better. Still a pain in the bum pulling another one out and fitting what may well be another "grenade"to the 186. Might just cut my losses and get on with fitting the Celica conversion sitting on my bench. Stick the next reco box in the back of the shed as a standby for the FJ ute.... if it ever needs it Chippy still has the old box out of the FJ panelvan... but as i said before i am trying to avoid boxes with an unknown history...... well ... at least i thought i was..... Recond gearbox means ya just pay more for the same headaches as the one down the chook pen... Reddo

G'day Red-o.....that's about what I figured....pretty ordinary .....a few years back I was chasing some gearbox bits for an EH and I ended up at one of those reco and paint 'em up places....they were offering up cluster gears without the rollers, they put a brass bush in the hole and called it done ( also did the same to the end of the mainshaft), musta figured it was just too hard to load the needle rollers ....other thing was they mixed up all the internals and just worked from a big pile of bits.....and one of the the things you especially don't mix up on early Holdens is the mainshaft and synchro hubs....they are/were serviced as an assembled pair from Holden , mix 'em up and they WILL jump gear.....I reckon you should have a go at getting your folding green returned 'coz I suspect you'll just get more of the same. If you do manage it , then get a few s/hand 'boxes and have someone who knows their way around them to strip and rebuild one ( or 2 or 3 ;D) for you, that's really the only way you'll get something dependable

"We notice you haven’t left any feedback, can you please leave us positive feedback for this transaction thanks" Ya gotta take ya hat off to em havent ya....more front than a rat with a gold tooth ;D The best part and the only part that has gone the way "transactions" are suppose to go so far is that i have sent em the money... the rest of the deal is a bit "lop sided and pear shaped to say the least...." ;D Might have a few more stubbies and compose a strongly worded reply laced with a bit of tongue in cheek sarcasim.... . Nup... cant do that... they might put rocks in the next gearbox.... Positive feedback... strewth Ruth and Geez Louise... Gimme a break. Reddo

So... I gits home from the spring tour with a noisey first gear in the "second even betterer than the first" recond paper mache' gearbox. Vibrations at anything over 55 mph .. which was most of the way home....turns out the output shaft bearing has given up after less than 1000 miles... I know they wont give warranty on a grey crashbox up behind a good 186... but.. the ones i have been dragging out of chookpens have given sterling service for at least 5000 miles. Thats it.. i have had enough. Down the chook pen and drag out the Celica 5 speed /dellow conversion i bought before the tour. ( shoulda done this years ago and saved literally $1000s of dollars ) Most of the expensive Dellow stuff is in good nick ( so i thought). Bell Housing Throw out fork Thrust race ( bought a newy $95 ) pivot ( worn .. $35) clutch use my pressure plate Condition of box unknown Tailshaft with toyota yoke. My slave cylinder. Need to fabricate a gearbox mount.... Speedo cable ( $60) Trans hump offa ebay fa $80 Yup.. i can do this... Out with the seats.. the carpet.. and then a stringline ta centralise everything .....coupla chalk lines so i know when ta stop carving up the floor before the car falls in halves ........introduce the high speed orbiting cutting apparatus ....... a few litres of blood .... and...a few hours later..... Bingo.. a 15 speed FB Panno..... Yup.. 15 speed.. count em.... 3 on the column ... and 5 on the floor... MAN .. this thing'll haul a 5 ton caravan now... Just gotta master one of those sparkeler things that plug inta a power point and fizz the floor back in one bit and i will be on the road in no time.... While i waz at it i bolted in a set of air bags....... but i think i stuffed em up... I hooked em all up to the compressor and .... The rear windows blew out..... and the car went 2 foot in the air... honest it did... seeeeeee..... insteada droppin on its guts it got up on its tippy toes Nevermind..... me being the ever opportunist , i decided to bugger the windows orf and fit Jenn-u- whine... bondwood plantation shutters in either side... wwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cool... Bought a big chunka New Zealand Ash Exterior Bondwood... ( Gods gift to the vintage van and FB Holden Van manglers) Have cut to size and plan on sikaflexing them over the holes where the exploding side windows came from. öw's that for dedication to the beloved bondwood. Woodgrain dashs are cool... but woodgrain windows....woooooooo... waz that ya say??.. I wont be able ta see outta them..... Too right mate.. and the perverts wont be able ta see in ;D Have sent a set of HR front Disc calipers and rotors off to a mate who works at a brake specialists. When i finally work out what i stuffed up with the air bags and get the van down out of the shed rafters i will extract the front drums and whip in the disc stoppers...replace the rear wheel cylinders and shoes to suit the disco front end. That'll keep me occupied for a while... Scuse me for now.. Gotta go polish my glovebox lid that Frankey J Holden autographed.......Need to keep it shiney for Tathra next year... Or.. should i take the FJ Yoot MRFJ55
