I happened upon this on youtube last night - there's 3 episodes, this is a link to the first - the others are easy enough to find once you are on the site. Apparently made late last year (2010). Hope you all find it interesting. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT18CSPCdB8&feature=youtube_gdata_player These are the three films referred to by Brock:Don Ricardo

WOW!.... WHAT A GEM ! Thanks for finding that for us brock..... (makes me feel as though I've been asleep at the wheel though ) We have heard that the SA industry was doing something to record its history but this one slipped under the radar Cobber.

Many of us who were at Mildura last year may remember meeting up with and being interviewed by Trevor Gill (of Lighthouse PR)who came along over a two day period doing research for the book and documentary he was doing on behalf of the SA caravan and camping Assoc. I was aware that he gave his initial film presentation late last year to the assoc and have been in contact recently with him. He will be forwarding me a copy of the doco/film and, more importantly, of the book. I will also obtain details of where, (for anyone who is interested), you can obtain a copy. Anyone owning early NSW,QLD,WA or VIC manufactured caravans should not feel they have been left out. The whole thing was commissioned by the SA assoc specifically to record and highlight Sth Australias role in the founding of the caravan industry. thanks for finding this Brock regards jennison

G'day Jenno, I think I recognise the bloke blocking the doorway of the Pathfinder in that video . It would be good if the CCIA commissioned "somebody" to do "The History of the Caravan industry in Australia - Part one" aye? Don't you forget to tell us when that book hits the stands...... will be interesting to see how it sells Cobber.

Thanks for the link Brock.
Some fascinating photos and old movie footage have been incorporated into the videos which are great to see. Quite a few facts I hadn't heard before as well.
Not to mention a few scenes I recognised from the 2010 V V Nats at Mildura.
Trevor has done a good job.

Thats a truly great doco. I have been through the three episodes twice now couldn't resist. A question for the experts, what's that magnificent van shown at point 1:28 in episode 2. The cream one with silver roof and looks to have wrap around front windows.

Evening all, This thread is about the history of the Caravan & Camping Industry Association of South Australia. I guess that could be interpreted as the history of the South Australian caravan industry... Yesterday I was looking for something else and came across the following advertisement from a South Australian newspaper or magazine which was sent to me quite a while ago. It's with a group of photos sent to me by Lazza, so the advert probably came from him. If that is the case, apologies to him for not posting it earlier, but I remember I put it aside to look at later because I was having trouble deciphering some of the print. However, when I looked at the advert again yesterday, it struck me that it provided a very interesting snapshot of the SA caravan industry: Unfortunately, as indicated, the words are a little hard to read, but I think all the caravans shown are SA built vans, and by their styling I am guessing that the advert is from the mid to late 50's. I am able to identify some of the caravans: TOP ROW L to R: Clipper, unknown, Furness, Globetrotter, Hardy, Paramount
BOTTOM ROW L to R: Roadmaster, Rowvan, unknown, unknown, unknown, unknownI am wondering if anyone can identify some of the caravans that are marked as unknown? Or perhaps Lazza can look at the original if he has it and list the brand names for us? It helps that all the vans appear to be listed in alphabetical order. The advert was placed by the Caravan Centre in South Road, Edwardstown, close to the epicentre of caravan manufacture in SA in the 50's and 60's - Clippers, Furnesses and Roadmasters were all built in Edwardstown. 'Caravan Centre' may refer to 'Farrell's Caravan Centre', which was a caravan retailer that sold a number of different brands under its own name. However, all the references to Farrell's show it as being located at Glen Osmond Road, Parkside, which is around 9 kms away from Edwardstown. There may also be a link between the Caravan Centre at South Road, Edwardstown and 'Clarke's Caravan Centre' located in Brisbane which built its own range of caravans. However, this seems unlikely because most caravan manufacturers and retailers in the 50's were very firmly state-based. So - can anyone identify any more of the vans shown in the advert? Don Ricardo

Hi Don The page with the caravan pictures is the centre fold page from the Australian Caravan and Touring Manual, Book 10 1958 by Keith Winser. The caravans are from left to right - a Clipper, Corlett, Furness, Globe Trotter, Hardy Van, Paramount. Bottom row - Roadmaster, Rowe Van, Ritter Van, Lessur Van, Regal, Broadway. raym
