Thought I would add some specs... Diannes ute is a 51 chev that I chopped the roof 4 inches, laid the screen back, frenched headlights and a custom grille etc. The body is channelled over a HQ Holden floorpan with 202 auto and 4 wheel disc brakes. We are soon fitting a 253 to help towing but mainly to sound cool.
The 55 is a bit more radical. The body is basically stock apart from some debadgeing and smoothing. The paint is candy apple tangerine and black, done in our shop( Affordable Bodyworks) The interior is custom leather trim done by a mate Adam Laird. The running gear is a Dart 406 CI smallblock making around 600 HP on the dyno. The car ran 11.8 at the drags and now the motor is all new it should run a low 11 or a high 10 on a good day. It tows our teardrop reeeeally easy. Cheers John.

Hi John and Di, They look great. I know that i've seen the ute in teh flesh, and I think i've seen the 55 before all the great work - wasn't the 55 all black at one time? ? I love the colour scheme. Luv Di

Thanks for the nice replies everyone. Yes Dosse we need a bit more grunt in the ute so we dont get passed by FORDs going up hills . And yes the 55 should pull a few skins off rice puddings ( if you are well insured I'll take you for a ride in it). Yes Di. the 55 was matt black for about 3 years and we towed the camper heaps like that. Thanks Clyde . Who needs to advertise when you promote us like that !!!

After having oil pressure problems in the 55 ,I pulled the sump off yesterday and found the oil pump pickup sitting in the bottom ! Somehow I have dented the sump and it hit the pickup and knocked it loose from the pump. We TIG welded it back in to avoid it happening again. ( could have been a disaster) I am picking up the 253 this week and will start the conversion soon into Diannes ute.

We now have V8 power (sort of) in the ute. The little 253 is a bewdy, after fixing vacuum leaks and some new plugs its all good. The trimatic seems okay ,just needs a little shifter adjustment. Will take it up to Fat Pipes this week to get the exhaust finished and the alternator needs a tickle up. Then we just have to drive it and sort out any bugs. The 55 is back up at the trimmers to get arm rests and boot carpet fitted. I have to get it back Wednesday so I can do final a final checkover before our maiden voyage to Lake Ainsworth on Friday. ( Towing with 600 HP should be fun) YAAHOOO
Seeya there.

We took both cars up the road to Lakeside raceway on Sunday for the all American day. Hundreds and hundreds of top cars cruised the track all day and I entered the 55 in the track challenge. 1/8th mile drags and a slalom. The first run I was a bit leadfooted ,smoked the tyres too much and ended up all sideways in the other lane .I got back into it and drifted back into my lane and finished behind the Mustang. The crowd loved it and it got my adrenalin going thats for sure. There is a video on youtube under Lakeside All American Day 27/11/11. Dianne had a ball also cruising the track in her ute amongst Corvettes , Buicks ,Pontiacs , Mustangs, you name it. To top the day off we won Car of show trophy in the 55. What a blast !!! We also just bought another 253 for the ute as the other one is losing oil pressure . So that has to be fitted before Christmas . Pheww. So little time ! Cheers John

Well. We spent today fitting yet another motor in Diannes ute. (three 202s and now on our second 253 V8.) We bought the latest one from a mechanic who said it was rebuilt about two years ago. We started about 8.30 this morning and the new one was back in by 12.00. Pretty easy except the sump, heads and water pump were different so we had to do a few swaps and mods. We tried firing it up and found it had really low compression so we squirted oil down the bores and a can of Startyabarstard down the carby and she finally backfired into life. Next thing was lots of rattles and no oil pressure We pulled the oil pump off the old motor and fitted it. At last, 50 psi and she quietened down really nice. We threw the bonnet back on and took off up the road out of town only to lose power and coast to a stop while putrid smoke came up through the dash. I jumped out and yanked the battery lead off and searched for the problem while Dianne ran 1.5 ks down the road to our mates place. We finally found the main positive wire from the starter had touched the extractors and melted. My mate did a temporary rewire to get me home and it did the trick. Phewww! The motor sounds really nice now, goes good, and doesn't blow smoke. Just needs a good tune up. My mate said we would have the swap done in four hours, well we just doubled that. Cars..... Don't ya luv em ?? And to think we are driving this heap to Cowra in a few weeks.

Ha ha Gavin. I usually get us going when we have dramas but he offered to help. What would we do without mates ?
The latest with the new motor is we are pulling it out again tomorrow. It still has really low compression. We thought it might have come right once we drove it but nooo.. Looks like it didn't like sitting around for so long. Hopefully we can get away with a quick hone and rings. Time's running out fast.

We took the ute for a drive today and is going really well with the old original 253 back in. Jamie my mechanic just polished the crank and put new bearings in without disturbing the pistons etc. The oil pressure is better than it was and we are confident it will do the trip OK now. At least it starts easily, runs smooth and doesn't fume or smoke. Yaaaaay.
