The latter is the case, I think Firefighter. We know about a few manufacturers in Victoria who were churning out fairly significant numbers of caravans (for the times) on a commercial basis from the very late 20's onwards. They included Caravan Construction and Hire P/L, who produced Land Cruiser caravans, Wolfenden and Windmill - and allegedly Roma (although I'm guessing under a different name). Anyway there's some really interesting names in the lists you have provided. Thanks for posting them. I note that the lists from the 60's include some names that we keep hearing but can't find any info for - so there is still plenty to uncover out there! Don Ricardo

You've opened up a can of worms there old F/F.... lots of names that haven't been mentioned in DHL..... yet (maybe one of 'em built Ol' 36 : We do know people were building caravans in Melbourne before 1938 so it is a wonder they weren't listed. Cobber.

Hi, Firefighter,
Interesting directory particularly the 1968 entry where Wanda, 144 Pascoe-vale Rd M Pde appears? My Franklin Premier is badged as a Wanda, & maybe it is a real Wanda - I always thought Franklin copied Wanda. ;D ;D
Also Franklin where at fern Tree Gully Rd in Mount Waverley in the 1968 directory but had moved to Ballarat in the 1970 Directory whilst Wanda were still in Melbourne.
I would be interested to know when Wanda first appeared in the Melbourne directory of caravan manufacturers? Should be good info for Inspector Al Franklin 1.
Regards Jodel

G'day jodel1050, Ha, ha, ha...you West Aussie guys have a real keen sense of humour! I too read through F/f's lists with much interest. Seems there are quite a number of entries that can only be caravan dealerships, rather than manufacturing addresses. For example, Millard certainly didn't have three manufacturing plants in Melbourne in 1968. Now that you know Wanda was in Moonee Ponds, maybe Dame Edna Everage can remember something about them?? Old Franklin loved Ballarat. Never got out of the place (even though as urban sprawl took over, they had to name the original farming area he went to, as Wendourie West). cheers, Al.

Gee reading all those names in the 1970 directory bring back some memories as i repaired a lot of those makes in the mid seventies. At our work shop we had the office wall covered with al the emblems and stickers that we cut out of the damaged panels and they were all stapled to the wall. When they moved from Amay Cresent Ferntree Gully to Gilbert park drive Scoresby, they were removed and put in a box and some years later they were all thrown out but i do still have some original stickers that were never used stored away. I will one day take some photos and post them with some original Wayfarer photos and other photos from back in the sixties and seventies. Regards Gerald

Hi Al, I was hoping that Tina Arena would remember, but then I checked the location of 144 Pascoe Vale Road, Moonee Ponds & found it is The Brass Tavern - if that is anything like a pub then no wonder everyone who goes in our van comes out with something akin to dementia- who would build caravans in a tavern. I guess those in Melbourne would. My wife thinks I'm to blame for the alcohol smell in the VV & all the while it is just left over from the manufacturer.... Cheers & Cheers Jodel
