G'Day Everybloody T'was on another thread and noticed comments made by a hooligan from Alstonville about late model ....Post 70's vans. The intro to this site states that it is primarily for pre 70's caravans. Got me to thinkin' about what constitutes a vintage van. If we follow the general categorys that cars and bikes fall into within the club scene we would be struggling to have any vans at all that qualify as "Vintage" It is my understanding that Veteran is pre 1920 Vintage is pre 1930 pre war is 1931 to 1939 post war is 1945 to 1959 Classic 1960 to 1975 ( next year it will be a 1976 cut off) Moderns 1976 onwards . Sooooo..... I have only seen 1 or maybe 2 vans on this forum that meet the criteria. the "Covered wagon" box trailer with wooden wheels that someone posted would probably be pre 30's. So what you might say. We all love our vans no matter what age. I agree. Its a bit like vintage wines i suppose a whole lot younger than 1930 but still described as vintage ( or should i say....a good vintage) If pre 30's is vintage and post 60's is modern or classic where does the 99% of our vans fit in the scheme of things. Not wanting to start any pie throwing here but it is something worth mulling over. Reddo......ducking for cover. Change the site name ..... NEVER!!!!

A caravan is neither a motorbike nor a car.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word "vintage" as such:
" of old, recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality : CLASSIC : dating from the past : OLD b : OUTMODED, OLD-FASHIONED"
I chose the word "vintage" from this definition when I named my website.
I also chose my website, and the discussion forum to be for pre 1970 caravans, and that it will remain.....but having said that, a post 1970 caravan could be described as a vintage caravan.
Anybody is welcome to start a website for post 1970 caravans, but this website is for pre 1970 caravans. I hope this clarifies ......
Cheers,
Mark

G'day Mark Thanks for the clarification. Vans may not be cars or motorbikes but are still classified as vehicles and thats about where the similarity ends. eh. After reading your explaination it makes me wander how these other clubs arrived at their categories. Probably steered by a bunch of disgruntled trophy hunters who where dirty that there was no category for their pride and joy. Me??? I dont give a sh*t weather something is 100% original , restored, modified or hot rodded, veteran, vintage or classic . As long as it is out there being used loved and cherished by its owners. As for the site .... don't care what its called as long as its PREDOMINANTLY pre 70's. i won't treat anyone with a post 60's van as an alien. Reddo - 1954 Vintage

how about associate membership for owners of seventies vans (on an isolated forum page) kind of like the ullyses club that gives associate membership to people who are only 45 years old! you never know their van may be older than they are. cheers

you often hear 1970's & 1980's caravans referred as old caravans .....and I spose they are .....as are the cars from those two decades. We have a caravan dealer here in WA who deals in 70's & 80's caravans .....he says he buys OLD caravans & does them up for resale, but he ain't referring to the type of caravans that we're all about! So how about a website: www.oldcaravans.com dedicated to these vans? Personally, I have limited interest in them. however I did own a 1978 Millard caravan for a few years, which I towed to the East a couple of times.....and was impressed with its lightweight for its 16' in length......but what a shit of a van to tow into headwinds .....about as aerodynamic as a brick !!! Hi mark Rather than calling a site www.oldcaravans.com and risk causing confusing with our much more desirable vintage vans we could start a section in www.vintagecaravans.com called " late model shit" or Go here - www.twowheelednonferrouscrap.com. a site catering for post 60s aluminium vans Ok, Ok Ok I know there is people out there with these monstrosities in there yards. I will admit they make great granny flats, teenage retreats , chook pens and luxurious cattledog kennels But if i see any of our listees towing one they will be subject to a public shaming. OOOPPPPSSS!!! I hope they dont come back with a reply stating that the same will happen to me if i tow the van with a post 60s car. Might have just shot myself in the foot eh!!!! Reddo - 3 months 22 days till Coledale ... but whos counting
