G'day Don R, Had a funny feeling these photos would push your button that is why I posted them without comment The bus for me rings a bell, seen it somewhere before I think The photos were shown to me at Lake Goldsmith, the lady who is one of the children in the photos didn't mind me taking photos of the photos and she did tell me where the photos were taken and ............ Barwon Heads does ring another bell wouldn't that be interesting... check it out with your cousin, might be the same bus, aye? Cobber

Hi Cobber and Don. The photos are of my family. The ones at the beach are at Portarlington so you were not far of the mark with Barwon Heads. The others could be at Lake Nagambie but am not sure.We used to hire these vans until dad(whose name just happened to be Don)and mum purchased their own 12ft Don Cadet sometime in the mid fifties. We spent many great holidays not only at Portarlington each Christmas but many other places as well.I was the youngest of 6 in those photos but our family eventually grew to 9.We used to sleep mum & dad on the back divan bed 3 kids on the table 3 in the annex & another 3 in the FC station wagon. We had so much fun and I contribute my passion for vintage vans to those good old days.
regards Di

G'day Di, Thanks for chiming in with some details and facts about these nice photos and thanks for letting me take photos of them at Lake Goldsmith Over that weekend we heard so many stories from so many people about their memories of caravans and caravanning that my muddled old mind has trouble remembering it all Cobber.

A photo of the Burleigh Heads Caravan Park....taken around 1964 I'd say. From a book called "The Australians" (published by Rigby in 1966) Cobber.

I have been told this is a photo of a 1937 Plymouth and a Baravan............ I think the car is older than that......... and the van looks too old to be a BaravanWhat do others think Cobber.

Hi Cobber,
Nice photo! Looks to be a 30's van would you say?
A bit old for a Baravan, since Baravan only started in 1954, so I agree with your conclusion.

OK Don R. The confusion arose because my friend knew his relos had a Baravan and jumped to the conclusion this was it.......... can't fool us aye ? All we have to do now is find out what it IS, Cobber. P.S .... The Plymouth is around 1928 model.

G'day Gordon, That photo could also go in the "Furness" thread in DHL Furness often publicised their suitability for towing by the FJ Holden. Cobber.

Hi DC3Td,
10 footers aren't (dime a dozen), nor are the pre-war vans. It would be great to find an example with the earlier window leadlighting. However, I digress...
Yes, I was wondering about the larger van too. Haven't got any ideas at this point, but still pondering. It appears to lack a front window. Is that how you see it?

Ha.I think Don Ricardo knows i said it with tongue in cheek. Bit hard to tell if the big van has a fixed ply panel or is canvas covered. The car is a Singer. The truck? Over to Griffin for an answer.

G'day DC3Td, Have you found a treasure chest of V V photos? A very nice collection of pics in any case. Thanks for posting them. I'm sure it not just me enjoying seeing them. The first photo in your last post (with the Austin) is an Adventurer. Nice to see a coloured photo of one taken more or less in the era it was built. How about posting the photo in the DHL Adventurer thread? It would be good to have it there for reference purposes. (PS Looks as if the Adventurer photo has been shown in mirror image - steering wheel on the left and no door on the van?) Regarding the van you've labelled as 'AUS Army' in the preceding post, do you have any more info about the photo, such as location, etc? The reason I ask is the following comments referring to Wolfenden caravans: I note from the article that "The RAAF bought most of the hire fleet to house men at the Sale Base during the War" Does anyone have any idea/suggestion on what the RAAF would have done post-war with the vans? I live awfully close to Sale, wonder if they ended up around the area? Gristy I know you have said 'Army', but there are an awful lot of planes in the photo. The Wolfenden caravans we have photos of don't show them with lantern roofs like the one in the photo, but you never know. If the photo was taken at Sale... Don Ricardo

Gday Don R. The Austin with the Adventurer was taken off a UK site. Can`t read the # plate on the Austin myself. The Army one is from the ENSA WW11 site. All i`ve been doing between coffee breaks is punching in vintage caravans/old caravans/army/military caravans etc on google images.Thousands come up as well as links within pics to various other sites like (pin terest <<< one word though) & all those other photo sites.

The Austin with the Adventurer was taken off a UK site. Can`t read the # plate on the Austin myself. Hi DC3Td, Not entirely surprising, given that the number plate is back to front. Try this... That looks better. The plate reads PY-729 and I think that I can read VIC running down the plate to the left of the 'P', indicating a Victorian registration. (South Australian number plates before 1967 were all numerical, so that discounts it being a South Oz vehicle.) Looks to me like a eucalypt behind the car bonnet as well, so it's pretty definitely an Australian scene as you indicated, even though you found the photo on a UK site. Regarding, the van parked near the planes, what does 'ENSA' stand for? I had been wondering if the photo was in fact English? The van is quite English/UK in style, and did you get a gander at what looks to me like a Bentley behind the van? Don Ricardo
