Hi all I have just picked up a 19foot tandem Dee Jay bondwood van. It was getting dark when i got home so no internal photos yet. Hope to be home early enough tomorrow to take some & post them. Van only came out of the garage to go on holidays and has no rot in it (that I have found anyway). Have got the annex but aluminum poles so will be chasing wood poles later. Brakes are vacuum which will need to be changed as I am told it is now illegal to tap into a vehicle's vacuum system in Qld.(told Cheryl I would have to look for a Dodge 1 tonner with vacuum already fitted - she ignored me). Has a shower inside (original) which is neat. Has been repainted on the outside which we will re-do and change the stripe to how it would have been. Internal appears to be the original paint still as is the fuse box but more on the inside when I get the photos up. Bye for now Neil & Cheryl

Thanks Banno We are very happy with the van. Didn't take photos last night due to the storm but here are the photos I took tonight. Took one of the tow hitch for Cobber. Didn't know if you had come across these before By turning the chrome handle it tightens a clamp underneath the ball. Seems to work OK. Here is an internal photo from doorway to the front. Fridge is on the right and frame of screen door is on the left of the photo. The objects you see on the side of the left frame of front window are a pencil and spirit level, neatly in their own holder From doorway looking to the back of the van The shower is behind the wall on the right. When you open the shower door and the front wardrobe door on the left, they can be locked together forming a private bathroom/bedroom as seen below Here is the shower And the tank that you remove, fill with water to your required temperature, replace & shower away Headboard for the bed across the back Bed is no bigger than our Rowvan bed - but is big enough (I've lost weight) Bed between the doorway & shower Check out the gas stove/oven.Looks in good condition And above it is a container for used matches Stove, sink and fridge and if you look at the tap it is electric. Haven't checked whether it is 12 or 240 volt but the switch appears original - that would be rare. Glass shelf above the fridge and sink The van was to be part of a museum that is no longer going ahead. Here is the sign they had for the van This will make me the third owner All doors have good gaps and open & close nicely. Fresh paint, new curtains & upholstery, sort the brakes and we're away Bye for now Neil & Cheryl

G'day Neil & Cheryl, Thanks for thinking about the “Tow Coupling” thread when you must be pretty excited about getting hold of this rare gem It's a shame the Queensland Trade & Industries Association aren't going ahead with the proposed museum (I assume it was them ?) because last we heard they also owned the “Oldest Caravan” in Australia..... I wonder if they have sold it too ? Have you noticed the bit on “Dee-Jay” 'vans in DHL ? The photo there looks like the tow car could be a “Chrysler Royal” too.... the 'van has a different colour scheme to yours but still could be the same 'van The “Rice” tow coupling has turned up once before in DHL but I'll add your photo to it if that's OK? Cobber.

Hi guys,
nice find! I am sure you will get some great times with it.
I doubt if the Vauxy is going to be very happy towing it though.
cheers, Leigh.

Not sure on its weight Mark. It towed well but you knew you had it behind you. I'll post the weight once I've weighed it for rego.
The group of people behind the museum have sold all the vans except one Cobber. They kept the 1929 Caravan and Model T Ford and they are not for sale. Did notice the van on the DeeJay thread and by the windows I reckon it has the same layout on the RHS. Mine has extra vents where the fridge is but that could have been fitted later.
Vauxhall won't be getting a chance Leigh. Doing a 1960 PAY up at the moment (no, not to tow it with either) so if you know what the engine specs were for the one that won Bathurst I would appreciate it if you would let me know.
The shower sealed the deal for us - just loved it

Hi Neil and Cheryl.. Please forgive me for my late reply to your posts re this great van. I just can't seem to keep up with all the goings on here on the forum nowadays. Theres hardly a day goes by without another gem being unearthed. What a great score She sure looks solid. This is the way to find em guys. Cant wait to see it in its new /original colours.... Isnt it funny how the van dictates what type of towcar is needed. Keep us posted on any work done on the van. Congratulations on a great purchase. Reddo... the non biased towards bondwood type

Tandem wheels, ensuite ........... really goes to show that today's vans haven't really made any great or major innovations, when you consider the creature somforts you could get more than 50 years ago! That's one beautiful caravan which will give you so much pleasure. Can't wait to see it "in the flesh" Ray

We are going to take this van on holidays with us in January so I have been getting it ready for registration. Gas certificate done (with original stove/oven) and new axles with electric brakes fitted. I went to many engineering workshops but none could fit the electric brakes to my original axles. Reason they gave me was the unusually large bearing size. During the last week we painted the outside of the van. Here is how it looks as of tonight We are very happy with the result and the habcaps I bought at Coledale Auction fit perfectly. During this week we will be cleaning the exterior hardware and next weekend we will have the chassis painted and the hardware refitted. Roadworthy & registration the following week.

Hi All,
Well Neil & Cheryl agreed graciously to sell Deejay to Boots & I , at the Lennox Head weekend event just finished.
Hopefully I pick it up next weekend. Just got to get electric brakes fitted to my hotrod, & thats simple.
We have no intention of altering anything, other than along the lines Neil & Cheryl intended.
A couple of cosmetic changes, new lino, new bedding, maybe seating resurfaced, a few minor stripe/pinlines outside, & a name on the outside.
Its great to find a van I can afford that doesnt need a lot of work.
This will remain a piece of history in most of its finish & details, from our point of view.
This will look great behind my 56 Dodge when its finished. I always intended the Dodge to be red & white, so now we have the van to suit.
Hopefully my first outing in it will be the next Lennox Head event early next month.

Hi Banno,
Totally happy.
Tows like a dream, my rod pulled it up St. Helena on the Highway at 70 km in 4th, without trying. Its not that much heavier than "Lucille" to tow it seems.
We are happy with Neils work in getting it registered.
Just a matter of plugging along. Cleaning the original interior paint , to remove age stains. Replace the horrible square sliding window on LHS with something that looks original, make a bracket at rear to carry spare wheel, get a new awning made & sail track fitted, fix the wiring, & a few other bits.
BUT we can & will use it as is. Hopefully next week we will get new mattresses, & we will be at Lennox Head in a couple of weeks with it.
Its all fun.

Hi JBJ It is a shame you didn't have more time to spend with us on Saturday, maybe next time. Those tandems do tow well don't they, and you can back them onto a site with great accuracy - much better behaved. Enjoy Neil & Cheryl

G'day Den, That is quite a step up from that little Purdon you had aye? Not many 'vans this size would have been sold new and it seems not many of them have survived so you do have something worth preserving...... your comment in reply #15 has been noted Cobber.

Hi All Couple of bits of info on Deejay. Its 18'4" in the body length, plus drawbar, so that accounts for it being called a 19 footer.(Salespeople always add a little to descriptions) Its 7'11" high plus hatches. So probably about 8'2". Its 7'1" wide plus lights & handles. Can anyone identify the wheels?? 15"diameter, accept Falcon XW era hubcaps. I am looking for a complete good condition hinged window assembly, 900 o/a length & 400 o/a height, in the same shape as the other windows. I've worked out how to make the outer aluminium frame look the same as the existing ones on the van, so as long as the shape & size is OK, I can replace the added on square edged window. So I now have another Red & White van parked where Daggsey & Carrots camped for a few days in Lady Madonna a little while back. I hope when I move Deejay undercover soon, that another red & white van doesnt sneak in to the same spot. JBJ

Nice Van !
Wheels 'could' be early Valiant , ap-vf as they had the three hubcap lugs and a slightly different lug pattern to the falcon ones .

Gidday Denis, You now need another purpose built shed for Dee Jay. Maybe even a Shade Shed? 20 foot wide X 30 Foot long just for the baby.
