Hi All
I thought seeing as though there was no organised vint van run on the east coast over easter i would try something that might catch on with others who have vans and are proud of them, thier tow car and the area they live in.
i live near Newcastle and Lake macquarie about half way up the east coast of Australia.
I thought seeing as i am the proud dad of the resently birth teardrop ( even though it sint painet inside yet) i would pose off around newcastle with the Ute and van in tow.
Have alook at the pictures . Perhaps we could start a section called "brag book". hook up your van to your tow car. Drag it around a few hot spots in your area with a www.vintagecaravans.com" sticker on the back and take a few happy snaps.
Thats exactly what Trish and i done today to promote the vintage van cause. No overnight stay .. but a heap of fun just the same ending in a nice counter lunch overlooking one of the best surfing beaches on the east coast of OZ. It made a welcome break from the bad news that we have been through here in the recent past... Notice i say past
We left home arouind 9.00and called at the bros place to let him know thre van was registered and thank him again for his handywork with the paint brushes.
from there we headed into Newcastle harbour.
Thats nobbys light house in the background. closed a few yrears ago and developers are negoitiating to open up a resturaunt. I spent many hours hooking up on giant groper on the rock ledges below the light.
water temp has dropped a fair bit in the past few days so the surf was a bit thin on board riders today.
We headed around past Newcastle ocean baths and up throughKing edaward park where they hold the Mattara hillclimb each year. I would really love to have a shot at the hillclimb on my Norton commando but the Mattara organisers wont let the bikes run up there. Bloody OHS and risk management have put an end to that.
Thats newcastle beach, the ocean baths and the buildings are the old hospital
There is about a 100ft drop on this right hander. Only time there is an armco fence therem is when they run the hillclimb.... Risk management... where is it now???.
What you cant see out to sea is about 45 coalships all at anchor waiting to get in to the docks to load up.
From Newy we headed south down the east side of the lake to Swansea where we stayed on day 4 of the east coast tour.
lake macquarie is the largest tidal salt water lake in the southern hemisphere and on full run out tide the water heads under the bridges at about 20 knots.
there is 4 lanes onthe two opening span bridges. There was a public outcry when the government announced that they wghere building a duplicate open span bridge instead of a high level bridge that the yauchts could fit under. end result is thattraffic can wait for 1/2 an hour while the spans open to let cruisers, trawlers, and game fishing boats in and out of the lake.
A stretch and a wander up and down the cycleway then we headed off south again to another great surf beach which has a town that is heritage listed. its like heading back to the 50s when you head into catherine hill bay. dozens of old miners cottages just as they wher 100 years ago. unfortunately the low life government and the developers look like striking a deal and we can look forward to high rise development in the future. The natives are really restless down here.
The big jetty out the back was reduced to half its length the same night cyclone tracey hit darwin Xmas 1974. They rebuilt it and there was coal ships that use to do the 60 miles from here to balmain ( i think ) carting coal to one of the powerstations that supplied electricity to Sydney, Sadly the ships have stopped running.
All this sight seeing can make a man thirsty so we headed up to the old Catho pub for a few sherbets.
great old pub frequented by surfies and bikies alike. fairly quite today at lunchtime.
Trish and i sat back and enjoyed a rare appearance of some sun for the first time in three days.
thirsts quenched we headed back around the north shore of lake macquarie
we swung through the carpark at belmont 16 foot sailing club. The bay is home to some of the biggest tailor i have ever hooked into. if you look closely you will see a stack of yauchts moored in the lee of Marks point.
We had a greaqt day out . pity we didnt throw a bit of campimng gear on board abnd stay the night somewhere. but it was only the maiden voyage for the TD. wanted to see if it would get the tail wobbles up with the 17" wheeels, ran the ute up over 110kph a few times and the van sat there with no signs of mucking up.
Everything stayed together and i can now move on with the interior fit out and finish off.
So thats it just a breif speil on todays mini tour.
feel patriotic about your town ??
why not hook the van on and show us the highlights.
Reddo and Trish... from the far side.
