Hi all,
Well here is the report on the weekend. Saturday morning I waited but noone turned up for the run except myself so Princess Helen myself and two camping friends headed off down the highway to Etty bay.
She handled really well, or I think she did. I have never towed a van so after about 30klms when things seemed to be going ok and I failed to see any other drivers madly waving their arms at me my heart slid back down my throat into my chest and I put the car into 4th gear. I wondered where all the traffic was, but later I found it in my rear view mirror. Woops!
We managed to sit on a comfortable for me 80kph , the car didnt over hear, the van didnt sway, the door didnt fly open so all was good.
Took the turn off just past Innisfail to Etty bay. Did my first steep descent into the bay but all went well.
Felt a bit odd as I drove into the van park. People seemed to just stop what they were doing and stare at me. Not sure whether it was me, the car or the van. But I hadnt even finished backing it into the site when some guy was wanting to look inside.
Poor Princess Helen was quite the talking point all weekend. Id come back from the shower and find people pointing and talking. The park manager came and sat with us for a while. He reckoned PH was a little pearler, and that people had been coming to him all day and telling him to go and check out the little 50's van. He insisted that he wasnt pissing in my pocket, I checked later, and no he hadnt pissed in my pocket, which was really lucky for him, I dont think that is something I would enjoy.
Anyway got home safely and except for the amazing heat and humidity had a really nice weekend.
Am going to add my thoughts on the park at the end of this should any of you ever entertain thoughts of coming this far north.
Etty bay is situated about 10 klms south of innisfail.
The van park itself is quite a small one and is right on the beach.
The backdrop is rainforest and you are surrounded by mountains.
It has recently been taking over by a new leasee and he reckons that its under renovation. The sites are fine,( even though I managed to pick the ONLY one that was in full sun all day)
Toilets and showers need some serious attention. But the new manager reckons that will happen with time.
There is no games room or pool. but the ocean is right there and there is a stinger net to swim in. The ocean was crystal clear andI could see all the way to the bottom. Regardless of the stinger net I still swam in shorts and tshirt for protection.
There didnt seem to be any yobbos around and the place was very quiet. There is no road , plane, or boat noise to be heard.
Cassowary walk the van park freely. No dogs are allowed at all though becuase it is a national park and apparantly the cassowary really hate dogs.
I think the cost was a bit on the expensive side. one night for one person powered site with no aircon saw an entry price of $23. Not sure if this was a holiday price or not. Extra people three bucks a head, aircon three bucks a day.
Ok heres the slide show
