G'DAY KOOL KATS & GROOVY CHICKS Just had the best time at Coledale with my beautiful young family and all my new extended " VINTAGE VAN FAMILY " and cant wait for next years event to rock on . I have allready booked my site (no 10) in Kerosine Alley again , saw Normie as i was leaving and said put me down for a week next year Same Bat-time , same Bat-channel , wouldn't miss it for quids ! Lets promote this fantastic get together and see if next year we can double the numbers like we did from 2005 to 2006 . (15 up to 31 V V,s) . 60 vans would be very cosy but not impossible as Norm has allways said he can open up other areas along the waterfront ( the northern end ) . So be there or be square ! Thats what i reckon , so book your sites early . We have achieved fantastic growth in two years with our interstate visitors , and our diversity of V V 's present . Teardrops , Properts , Bondwood , Fibreglass , and Aluminium all unique and a credit to their owners . LOOKING FORWARD TO A BIGGER BETTER COLEDALE IN 2007 ! REGARDS , MAURIE . " KEEP HOLDEN ON "

Hi WMS
Coledale is just North ( 20 minutes) of Woolongong NSW. Ring "Coledale beach reserve caravan park" and tell the caretaker ( Norm ) that you would like to book a site for the 2007 vintage caravan getogether in October. Held annually the weekend after NSW schools go back from holidays. Most people book for friday and saturday night. As Maurie has already stated dates would be friday 19 th to sunday 21 October.
We are planning another Vintage van spring tour the week leading up to Coledale . 5 days of madness and mayhem towing our vans and sstaying overnight at different locations 2007 we will be travelling via Goulburn, Moruya, Batemans bay, uladulla, Kiama and then into Coledale on friday 19th.
glad to see someone else is talking about having a different van for each day of the week.

We went to Coledale for a mini break this weekend and touched base with Norm. So far there are thirty-three vintage vans booked in for October, which means we'll be using the whole site from the cul-de-sac adjacent to the surf club to the "North Paddock" - a nice grassy section overlooking the beach, just over a little causeway beyond where the furthest vans were last year.
That will mean a bit of organising: - Norm plans to put the smallest vans like the Properts up in the cul-de-sac so they are sheltered if we get high winds again. - for the same reason he won't be putting lightweight vans along the beachfront - if you have low suspension on your van or car, let Norm know. Those vehicles won't clear the causeway into the North Paddock
It was a great weekend as always, and we had the bonus of meeting some Sunliner owners and a surprise visit from Tickos. Theo had a surfing lesson, which we could recommend especially if you are bringing kids - call Peter Hunt on 0407 283117 or a/h 4294 1311, or check out the "Bliss Surf School" website. Another useful contact is Eddy's Pizza and Mexican who are happy to deliver to the caravan park. Norm has the menu in his office.
We're planning one more mini-break this term and will be back at Coledale on the last weekend of March. If you're around feel free to drop by.
cheers
Belinda

What a top idea Maurie and kate Sounds like the sort of holidays that us old codgers use to have away with our parents. No electronic gizmos to keep you indoors and i reckon if we ask nicely the kids might even let us have a go at batting and fielding just to show them how silly we can be . Bags first bat. ;D Last one in is a rotten egg. I reckon by the time the sun goes down you pair are gunna be run ragged and will be in bed before prime possum or big dog... 7:30pm Old uncle Reddo

I won't be able to make it this year to Coledale for the 2007 get-together, so my pre-booked powered site is available for a lucky Vintage Caravanner - who likes to have 240v. Send me a PM for the details. Where will I be instead? In the USA at the Pomona swap meet and the Nostalgia drags at Bakersfield. earlee ;D

hi earlee
answering your call on behalf of alan and jenny and marvin.
if it's still available they'd love to take the site you've left - marvin is still a little basic and will be at coledale but it won't be finished by then. the powered site will make it a bit more comfortable.
thanks in expectation.
geoff 'n jude for alan and jenny.
ps coledale won't be the same without you - who's going to entertain judy while i'm busting my guts at work.?

Hi all,
We are into 50's and 60's Chryslers and just over a year ago we purchase a handmade 1954 caravan to take with us to the various car events that we attend.
I am new to this site.
On Saturday I met a man at Cessnock Swap (with an old caravan), who told me about this site and mentioned the upcoming Back to Coledale event. He also mentioned about touring around Moruya, Batemans Bay etc etc prior to Coledale.
Having just read all the messages on this forum i'm guessing that the man might have been "reddo". Anyway can someone please email me all the info re: dates, times, meeting places etc etc, so we can see if we can fit the trip into our schedule? Many Thanks.
It may be that all the info is already on this site and I have missed it - if so can someone please point me in the right direction?
Many thanks Diane

Hi Diane, Welcome to the forum. Yep, that was our Reddo at Cessnock in the old Matilda. He should have charged people to look inside with the amount of people that flocked to see her There's probably a pic of Matilda in members photo album section. Did you notice a wind blown, grotesque/distorted looking tent behind Matilda?? That was mine. And if Reddo says it took me 2hrs to put up the tent,he's telling porky pies........................................................................................... It was 3 hrs!! Glad to see another vintage vanner.Throw up a piccy of your van for us to admire if you can. Terry.

Hello Diane Aaaahhhhh ...good news Pleased to see that you have found your way to the site after i pointed out my "www.vintagecaravans.com" sticker to you and your husband on saturday.... It pays to advertise and promote vintage van usage at every opportunity ;D. Do as Dennis has suggested and have a read of the "2007 east coast tour planning" info then if you are keen on coming on this tour which runs from saturday 13th Oct at Bathurst through to Thursday 18th at Coledale ( pronounced Cold - ale ;D ) there is 2 things you need to do. 1. Click on my name "Reddo" in blue in the top left corner of this post. This will give you a direct link to a personal message option. Please send me your names, towcar details- year make model, make and model of the van, and a contact mobile number so i can include you in the bookings for the van parks we will be staying at on the tour.( we have 11 vans so far) 2, If you plan on staying at Coledale for the "2007 Back to Coledale vintage van get together" from Thursday 18th through to the sunday 21st you will need to ring Norm the caretaker at Coledale Beach Camping Reserve on 02 42674302 and book a site for thursday, friday and saturday night. (Coledale is 1/2hr North of Woolongong) WARNING: You will have a powered site every night on the tour but i am almost certain that all powered sites are taken at Coledale. You can still get a hot shower but will have to resort to gas, batterys, metho or kero for the rest of lifes little pleasures. Isnt that what vintage vanning is all about. Last count had the bookings up close to 40 vintage vans dating back to when moses played full back for the Jerusleum under 14's No matter what happens , be prepared for a great time.. or should i say.. "CAUTION: Vintage caravans - Enjoyable Goods - Class A1+" Reddo

Dear fbmad, jailbarjuice & Reddo, Thanks for replying so promptly and for welcoming us to the forum. Yes Terry I did see your wind blown, grotesque/distorted looking tent behind Matilda??, but I must admit I was trying not to stare !!! I've found all the info on Planning for East Coast tour and have read all 8 pages - what an achievement that was, but a bonus aswell as it saved me doing any work for 2 hours and I had a good laugh. We have decided to come along and join everyone on the tour prior to Coledale. We are both in the throws of applying for leave, so as long as that is granted we will be joining you at Goulburn and from then onwards. We won't know until next week if the leave is confirmed, once I know that I will contact Reddo via PM and give him all our details. I have attempted to upload of photo, but it didn't work - i'll have to read up on that later and work it out. The van is a plywood van with an aluminium skin on the sides, front and rear. It was the 3rd of 3 made by a man in South Hurstville (Sydney). Ours was built in 1954. He sold the first 2 but kept this one for him and his family. It was eventually sold last year by his son-in-law after the builders dealth. As you are all the van experts perhaps you can tell me is the term "Bondwood" a brand name or it relevant for all vans that are made of plywood? ?. I would like to be able to refer to our van something other homemade!! Many thanks Regards Diane

Hi Diane Bondwood is a reference to plywood which is basically layers of timber bonded together with glue. Some people say that the smell in thse old vans is because of the glues used . Some say it is the smell given off by the old cushions which are stuffed full of capock. I believe it may well be due to the previous inhabitants eating too many baked beans Your van is one of only three made. Some vans where refered to by thier builders surname. Purdon is one example of this . These vans where made in Maitland by the Purdon family. JBJ may be able to fill you in with more details but the point i am making is that if you can find out the surname of the builder then that would probably the best name to refer to as brand . Models sometimes are reffered to in 10', 12' and 14' etc. There is a heap of vans out there that are as yet "unchristened". There was a lot of small van building outfits around directly after the war . some survived to become well known manufacturers many did not ... If you have no luck with getting any further info from the son-in-law of the builder then i suggest you give the old darling a name of its own. There is a lot of vans on this forum that have womens names... Doris, Matilda, Alison, Mrytle to name a few. Maybe you can just christen it with a name you like. There is names like .. Groovin, The splinter Hilton, Loveshack, Elvis, 51 special etc ... so ... there is no rules when it comes to naming your van. True .. it would be nice to get the constructors name on the van and get rid of the "Homemade" title but it isnt critical. Great to hear you may be coming on the tour. I think the more you visit this site you more you will see that we are a pretty easy going lot. Coming on a tour or turning up at a vintage van wekend somewhere will confirm to you what i am saying. Loading photos. you will need to open a free account with a mob called photobucket. Please refer to "jims instructions." I think it is the top thread in either" technical" or "members Photos" section. Dont feel daunted by the process . everyone here that has posted pictures at one time or another have had to tackle the process and eventaully conquer it. Have Fun ;D Reddo

Hi all, Yippee - Yes we are going to do the East Coast Tour and Coledale, i'm looking forward to meeting you all. Reddo I will send you a PM shortly. Col thanks for your comments re: homemade caravans. I love our van to pieces and am not at all concerned that it was homemade, I think that perhaps more love, care and attention was put into it !!!! To be honest I have seen quite a few vans that are very similar, so I think that the maker must have taken alot of ides from other vans around at the time. Much thanks to Jim and his instructions on how to post photos - i've been able to upload a few photos of our van. So you can all decide for yourself what you think. The first two were taken a couple of weeks after we purchased the van (last year). We drove to a friends who have a large grassed area out the front of their place. We wanted to see how big the annex was and what the condition was like. It was our first attempt at putting up an annex and needless to say we had a lot of fun ;D working out what went where. Anyway we were very pleased to see that the annex was so complete and in great condition. Apparently it was only used a handful of times over the last 50 years. What you can see of the tow car is our White 1962 "S" Series Valiant. The next 2 photos were taken when we went down to Albury for the "Chryslers on the Murray" event earlier this year. This time we drove my baby a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda. So everyone what do you think - does it pass muster??? Di
