Hi Singer It is a shame I could not make it to Tanunda. You have a Sportline caravan. Our vans are very closely related. Yours is chassis no 389, mine is 385. I would love to see more photos inside and out...even see it in the flesh one day!!!! Cheers Steve Hi Steve. I shall post a few more pics tonight. Might see you at Pinnaroo camp over.

I just purchased a sportline caravan in Tin Can Bay, QLD, believed to be 1968 by the rego papers with chassis number 413. It needs some work and a previous owner began to take it back to bare aluminium but left it quite mottled as it was badly buffed. I would be keen to continue to take it back to aluminium however I am unsure as to whether it may have been originally painted white. I am sure the band was originally yellow, but the sides I am unsure. Thought I should add some of the before photos just for the record! The hatch started leaking in all this torrential rain, so its now under the verandah out of the weather, which is the beauty of this tiny little van it fits just about anywhere! I have not found the manufacturers plate but I did find a little sign inside the wardrobe with some tips about caravanning, printed in 1967. It has an old wind up 2inch tow ball hitch which may need replacing. The tinted perspex is a practical "modern" addition, but the front window with aircon is a bit of a mystery to me. The 2 windows either side look to be original configuration, but the middle section? Was it one long window or three separate windows each opening separately or were they fixed windows? I can't wait to rid it of this horrible appendage, but wondering what configuration to replace it with.....anyway hoping the sportline "sub-branch" can advise. It has the narrow back window by the way. I need to get some inside pics taken, its original but with some "modern" touches like the 80's laminex and vinyl, but all fixable. No fridge or stove but can add later. Its amazing where these vans turn up, I bought this from a couple of guys who buy, sell and tinker and are just enthusiastic about vintage vans.

Hi batmad The Sportline 'sub branch' seems to be growing faster than ever. A few years ago, a later model Sportline came through Pinnaroo, I think about 1972 model from memory. I was in my lunch break so didn't get any pictures. It had the two front windows like yours, which I am sure opened, and the large division between them (no aircond!!), and was white aluminium all over. I can't remember what the profile of the alum sheeting was either. It also had the full width rear window, about the same width as my front one. Your rear window looks to be about the same size as the rear one on mine. What is the length & width? Looks about 10'. Cheers Steve

Thanks for that info Steve, it measures around 10ft x 6ft. Its great to tow, as its about as wide and long as my car! That is interesting that there was no middle front window in the one you saw. The rear window is the same width as yours and seeing your tail lights I think mine are definitely a later addition. I am thinking the bare aluminium may have been the original spec so will continue to pursue stripping off the paint. As for the front window, I think it may have to be a 3 panel window as I have seen in other photos, once the aircon goes and a gaping hole is there I don't think I have much choice. I originally had my heart set on finding a QLD built Sunshine vintage van built in Mt Gravatt, but I am very happy with this little van. I still scan adds to see what is around though...its a bit addictive. regards batmad

These are a couple of photo's of our van. We are taking it out with a group on 1st May and I will get a couple more of the van. Cheers Deanna & Rick Additional note - September 2017: Unfortunately Paramount49's photos have disappeared into cyberspace. Below are some photos of their Sportline taken at the 2016 Vintage Caravan Nationals at South West Rocks. Don Ricardo

Hello there Deanna and Rick, my chassis number 413 is on the draw bar, maybe your drawbar was replaced? Where is your manufacturers plate located? Mine doesn't seem to have one of them. Is that security mesh on your flyscreen door? Mine has a sheet of ply and masking tape! Your van and Steve's are inspiring me to get a wriggle on with my little ugly duckling....dragging down the Sportline standard somewhat! I slept in mine for the first time the other night, lucky I am only 5ft, as its custom built for the vertically challenged...hehehe

Hi Batmad, Thanks for the reply. My manufacturers plate is located to the left bottom of the door. The door did have security mesh on but we have taken it off but it still has the flymesh. My water filler is different and it in just under the window left side. Are you in QLD? We are heading over to Maidenwell on the 1st and then onto Yangan, I think. just a couple of nights for our first run. Will post a few more photo's. Also Don if you read this, I had trouble uploading with photobucket last night so if you need to change the pics that is fine.
Cheers Deanna

Hi Deanna, I live on the Sunshine Coast, near Kenilworth. I haven't heard the name Yangan for some time, we grew up on a farm new Swan Creek not far from there, that was back in the 70's! If you venture over my way let me know, would love to check out your little van and meet some VV enthusiasts. AH maybe I will find my manufactures plate when I get the ply off the inside of the door then. Just transferred the rego over and was told of a lovely caravan park in Kilkivan, which sounds quite nice here is the link www.bushcamping.com.au/ Look forward to seeing more pics and best of luck for your trip. Hi Folks I saw Singers Sportline this weekend. Our chassis no's are welded on the top side of the right side of the drawbar. Even though our chassis no's are only 4 apart, mine 385 and theirs 389, there were a few differences (modifications). They have rubber seals behind all their windows that protrude about 10mm all round, whereas mine doesn't. Their external water filler is different to mine. Mine has the dished insert, and theirs doesn't.
Mine:
Theirs:
Inside, their overhead cupboards front & rear are dropdown as well as under the bed. Mine are sliding. The cupboards are drop down over the kitchen area in both. I have a ply inner roof lining, the same as the walls, but their roof lining is laminate. They thought their kitchen sink and hand pump had been replaced, however both were the same as mine, although they thought their sink may be deeper. When they bought their van, they were told it was 1959, which is what I was told when I bought mine. Regards Steve

I am looking for a front window(s) for my Sportline, it currently has an airconditioner and Perspex over what appears to be the original window openings. It is harder than I realised to source these old windows! I found a workable solution to the window dust seals as the original rubber profile is no longer made.

Hi Batmad, I just purchased a Sportline caravan today, my chassis number is 414! Mine has two windows at the front like yours but they are closer together. I'll post some photos shortly. Does anyone have an image of the Sportline logo they can send to me as I would love to get this printed on the side (and rear) once the outside is cleaned up.

Photos of a 14 ft Sportline caravan listed on Gumtree, April 2017:Sportline is known for its 10 and 11 ft caravans, but there have been one or two references on the forum to 14 ft Sportlines. The Gumtree van appears to be one of those. Built by Fred Schrader, the van looks to be identical to some of the 14 ft Harris Vans that were also built by Schrader, and it also has the three part, wrap around front and rear windows found on Schrader-built Harris Vans, but not on the smaller Sportlines. However, one possible difference is that the woodgrain laminate on the cupboards is a light colour, as seen in other Sportlines, whereas the woodgrain laminate on the Harris Vans seems to have in been darker colours. It occurred to me that this caravan might be a Harris Van, and someone has put the 'Sportline' name on it. However, this does not appear to be the case because the Sportline name written on the front appears to be quite old, and most likely original. According to the seller, this Sportline is 'One of only about 6 ever made, at this size!'. The seller has also dated the van as 1966.

Hello. This is my little van. (Hello, just joined the community) We picked it up in Adelaide a couple of years ago. It's about 14' (just over). On Gumtree I said there were about 6, but that was going on info from this page. I have no clue really. The bloke we bought it off, said it was a custom built size for the original owner. It is in amazing condition. The interiour, fridge and gas cooker are nearly new. The thing has hardly ever been used. Just needs new curtains, and a tile re stuck. We were going to keep it, but it's in too good a condition to modify in anyway. So I was hoping a collector might look after it. We have a 1957 10" Viscount Deluxe which we will use when reno's are completed. Can anyone help with the history?
