Hi All, I was fortunate to pick up one of these beauties in Aldinga, Adelaide, SA a few weeks ago in Early March 2009. Only 3 prototypes were built by a Mr John Fiege in SA circa 1981. They were given the title Magic Murphies Expandavan. They appeared briefly in an Australian Caravan magazine in February 1985. It is effectively a 16 foot caravan, single axle, with a shell over the top which splits in two to expand to twice the volume. The two sides are wound out using two handles at the rear. I must say I was attracted to its unique design, which reminds me of a small unit. It has a shower/toilet in the middle rear. There is some visible interior water damage due to the exterior seals being in bad nick as it had been sitting around for 15 years onsite somewhere. Does anyone know the location of 2 others Expandavans as depicted below or perhaps can give me more info on them? Alex, SA

Hi Soulace, What an amazing van! As Jennison said you may possibly get more info from the Classic Caravans Forum which is concerned with 1970+ caravans, not pre-1970 caravans like this forum. However, I'm really glad you showed us your van. We've seen some incredible vans on this forum - some pop-up (the roof lifts), some pop-down (the floor drops), some fold up, some wind the top half over the bottom half, and some have side, front and back sections (or all three) which fold out - but I don't think we've ever seen a van that splits in half and winds out like yours! What does your van weigh and how does it tow? Good luck with tracking down some further info on your van. It is definitely worth doing! Don Ricardo

A truly wonderful and unique van. What is the tow weight? As Don mentioned probably better to post this over in Classic Vans.
