I'm only new and just purchased my first caravan on 26th July. It's a Coleman 'pop-top' and well I suppose you would say it's sort of vintage being a 1982 model. ;D I've had black & white personalised plates made for it "TL6367". This plate were originally issued in May, 1951 to a 1937 model AEC Regal Sydney Government Bus (DRT&T) which was converted to a per way trailer. The bus (trailer) was withdrawn and scrapped in 1959. I look forward to reading and taking part in the forum. Regards, Graeme.

Hi Graeme, Welcome to the world of vintage caravans. You have obviously done some research with the number plate and will no doubt be seeking a van to compliment it . You will have better luck finding older vans in the eastern states, purely because of the larger population base. You will also find that members in your area will be very supportive in your quest and you will enjoy the thrill of the chase like the rest of us Could I suggest that you ignore comments from "guests" as the rest of us are/will be doing . daggsey

In time I will probably get an older van. I have 2 mates, one has a mid 1950's Propert and the other a 1951-2 Teardrop. This is probably what got me moving to do something. Even though my van is a '82 model (which is modern for this forum) most people I've told think that 1982 is vintage. ;D Look forward to taking part in the forum and also taking my van to some of the outings. Regards, Graeme.

You have a point jailbarjuice. No one wants to re-hash the post 70 stuff. In Graeme`s defence tho, I read his post in this way. He has introduced himself as a new member who has an interest in vintage vans. He has friends who own some interesting true vintage vans. He clearly stated that his van is a modern type and is aware it doesn`t meet with the forum criteria, so I don`t think he intends to send a barrage of info about it. I think he does just have a genuine interest .We have members on this site who don`t actually own a Vintage van yet. It is still just a glint in their eye. ;D Graeme might be out there hunting for a Vintage Van as we speak. ;D We all have to start somewhere.

Thanks guys for your comments. Yes I will most probably one day (soon) buy a 2nd van and I would like a 1950's era one if possible. As I said in my earlier post when people hear that I have purchased a 1982 model they think that is very old. When I tell them next that I'm now thinking of a 1950's one they will have a seizure. You might be also interested to know that back in the mid 1970's I owned a 1951 AEC Regent double decker bus (which I converted to a caravan and was fully registered) and also a 1947 Albion SPCX19W double decker bus which I preserved as a bus. As for "guests". I belong to a few other forums and pretty much the same thing goes on there. To me they are just nobodies hiding under a rock and I wouldn't even give them the time of day. ;D

Gday TL6367 & welcome to the wonderful world of vintage caravanning, Somewhere in the blue mountains you may pass an early 1960s 14ft white Roma with a blue stripe. It used to be mine and was sold via ebay. The new owner did a 1100km trip to get it (and then towed home). So there is plenty of hope for you to find a vintage van - even if from down here in Mexico ;D. Glad to see that you recognise the beauty of things from the 40s and 50s. I assume that the people you know who refer to 1982 as "old" are part of the grey army that insist on having 4X4 and tandem axle 2 person vans built post 2000? (Nothing against those people, some of them use that late model stuff as their home for months on end). If ya wanna get vintage 'camper style' track down a 1960s ACT camper. ;D or better yet a Propert.
Cheers, Gristy

Hi "Gristy", Will keep an eye out for your former van here in the mountains! No actually my 26yo niece and 22yo nephew think that my 1982 van is old. I know what you mean by the 'grey army' only wanting post 2000. ;D (and not only that the huge prices that they are paying for them). Yes, I wouldn't mind a Vaucluse built Propert! Back in my school days I use to live very close to their former workshop. I also think the Teardrops are just wonderful. It's only a matter of time and I will have to get one or the other. ;D

It would no doubt also boost the membership greatly too. I wish you luck in your search for a pre '70's van! Next week I'm heading out west (not with my '82 van) and you never know I may come across a pre '70's (or two) for sale! Kind regards, Graeme. ;D

Welcome TL6367, Love the rego plate and the history behind it. We look forward to cheering you on in your search for a 'really prehistoric van' (I am speaking from your niece and nephew's perspective you understand ) Don Ricardo Thanks Don! Yes, I'm a bit of a Sydney Government bus historian also. Back in 1951 4 pre-war single decker half cab buses were converted from buses to 'per-way' trailers. They were registered TL6364 through to TL6367. They were withdrawn (and scrapped except for one) between 1953 & 1959. I hope to go 'really prehistoric' one day soon. ;D Regards, Graeme.
