These photos of a Furness Caravan, with a Holden bodied 1937 GY 25 HP Vauxhall tow car, were taken in 1938. As you can see the stripe on the side differs to that shown on the 'vans above.   Items held by State Library of New South Wales. Cobber. |

Hi Cobber, The livery on the Furness pictured with the Vauxhall is very interesting. Most of the Furnesses we've seen appear to be cream with many of them having a green waist stripe, which seems to fit with the majority of adverts. Although having said that some of the vans in the adverts from the mid-50's clearly have a lighter, pastel colour for the waist stripe. However - and this is where I was heading in the first place - I reckon the Furness with the Vauxhall is probably grey with a maroon or dark red waist stripe (ok, I'm only guessing, but that's what the shades of grey in the pic suggest to me). Given that these photos were taken in 1938, and assuming that Furness started building vans in the early to mid-30's, it seems unlikely that the van in the pic could have been old enough to need repainting. So maybe this van was originally painted in this grey and maroon livery  ? If so, did Furness paint their vans in different colours early on, or...is this some special van? A prototype even, perhaps? All we need to work out is who owned the Vauxhall... Yes, I know a number of leaps of logic here - but it is intriguing that this van is painted in grey and maroon (or whatever colours) not cream and green. Don Ricardo |

G'day Don R, give Anthony Furness a call, he's Keith's son, and used to work with Dad in the factory when he was a lad. He's a wealth of knowledge on Furness caravans, including paint colour combinations, .......though its unlikely he would know much about the 1930's caravans ......but you never know  I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago. He supposedly had Furness Caravans of Adelaide build him a small lightweight 9 foot caravan for the journey. He left from Adelaide to travel to Cairns in March 1950, and returned in June 1950. There were many publicity shots taken on the journey outside Holden dealers. He gave me some pics, and a copy of an article entitles " Traversing Australia by Holden with Caravan" You may have to put a magnifying glass to the screen to read it     Mark

probably later this year or maybe over xmas i will be trying to duplicate the factory furness mutton chop paint job ..has anyone have the details on the sizes robyns furness has been painted many time's and there's no sign of the old paint thanks. .brenten

Had morning tea in a home made van, traced off a Furness, yesterday. Very old van still in use. Minimised changes.Laminex green crushed ice table for 4 at front, bunks at rear with single on top under window and 3/4 double underneath. Wardrobe on left, kitchen on right. Roof has double radius and has been reclad with fabric skin. White on exterior and deep green sash stripe on sides. Dolly wheels. Annie

Hi Furness, Welcome to the forum. It is a bit hard to date Furness caravans because they built basically the same design of caravan for long periods of years. The sliding door/sliding window van that you have seems to have been introduced after World War II (I'm guessing 1946 or 47) and then built until they finished production, which as far as we know was in the late 50's. So that means your van could have been produced anywhere from around 1946/47 through to somewhere in the late 50's. The only other clue that I can see is that your van has some dark painted or varnished wood on the ribs for the ceiling, which is similar to the Furness in the photos from the 40's shown higher up this thread. By 1955, Furness seem to have been painting the ribs in their ceilings the same colour as the rest of the ceiling, or at least in a light colour. So that may mean that your van is an earlier build, rather than later, but that is guesswork. If you can find a serial number on the van you can then compare it to other Furnesses, such as Brenten's. It still won't give you a precise date, but you can say that your van is earlier or later than this or that Furness, and narrow it down a little. I'm not sure where Furness put its serial numbers (or even if they did put a serial number on their vans), but you could try looking for some numbers made of weld or engraved on your A-frame (top, sides, underneath) or on a little brass brandname plate, if your van still has it. You say that the van has 'come into your possession'. Does that mean you have bought it, or was it perhaps given to your or left to you? Are you going to restore it, or are you intending selling it? There aren't a whole lot of Furnesses around, so it's nice to see another meet the light of day.  Don Ricardo |

Hi
Thank you all for the photos and information. The van is currently sitting in a friends shed in western Vic. It was parked there maybe 20 yrs ago and used as a cupboard for piles of hardware and tools. It was going to be destroyed as the space was needed for more important agricultural business stuff. I managed to convince them that I should have it and restore it. The restoration journey for this van starts tomorrow afternoon when I hopefully get it back to my place. The work should progress faster than the other projects i have going at the moment (1950 Series 1 80inch Land Rover, 1960 Willys Cj6 Jeep and a 1949 BSA bantam) as my wife is exited about the van. She's not so much with the cars and motorbike.
