Hi Leanne, are we unable to give you an approximate date from the information in our Globetrotter history section? Failing any other members knowing specifically about SA number plates, you could try and make contact with the Number Plate Collector's Club ( www.npcc.org.au/index.html ) although the website doesn't seem to be very active. Lots of info about the history sequence of NSW and ACT plates but the SA, Vic, Qld, and WA links don't work. By the by, the SA Transport dept is holding an auction of 60 historic numeric plates at the Adelaide Motor Show, 6 April (this coming Sunday). The catalogue can be downloaded but it doesn't give any details of the dates of the plates (and I'm not sure if they relate to trailers anyway). www.transport.sa.gov.au/ezyplates/numeric.htmlI seem to remember firefighter knowing about the history sequence of Vic plates, so he might know where to get info about SA plate histories. Might be some leads in there somewhere... cheers, Al.

Gedday Leanne, I was able to do a rego search through VicRoads in victoria on the original number plate from my old car. VicRoads were able to tell me when the car was first registered, the original chassis and engine numbers, and what color it was (for a small fee of course ) Maybe your SA department can do the same for your caravan number? May be worth a call. Chow, Brendan.

F/F you are a wealth of knowledge on this - or are you making it up ;D Chassis numbers often had a lot to do with manufacture date, some also based on state on manufacture (or so I have been told), EG: V160469 would be built 16/04/1969 in Vic. But 1647? ? maybe 1964??? Maybe nothing to do with it. The chassis number on my Franklin is 763 which I expect would be 7th month 1963. But who knows really (sounds good to me anyway). Cheers, Gristy

Unfortunately there is little or no historic recording of number plates in SA and even less enthusiasm or assistance available from Transport SA.
I have a 1925 vehicle which came with the number 16-257 I have a registration label for it from 1958 but cannot tell if this dates back to 1925
SA for many years issued a different sequence of registration plates for trailers etc. to those used for motor vehicles, they may still do it, this makes the task of matching plates to dates almost impossible.
cruz - I have a Globetrotter with a February 1964 Electrical inspection sticker on it, cant remember chassis number at the moment but will look it up and post it, this is probably as close to any build date you are likely to find

In SA, I believe numeric rego plates for cars etc were re-issued by Transport SA. As an indication, the 300 000 series was early 50's (FX holden), 400 000 was mid 50's (FJ Holden). However I have a 1963 EJ holden with original rego in 200 000 series. SA numeric car plates went to 600 000 (sometime in 1966 - fits same timeframe with Firefighter's trailer rego info) and then began alpha-numeric. If this re-issuing also occurred with trailers/vans etc, then this may not be a reliable means to age a van/trailer etc. Cheers Steve

Howdy Neighbour, I was close.....600 000 v's 599 985. Perhaps I should read more..and get my facts straighter. I've always been interested in SA no plates, but have never found much literature on the subject (not that I've looked terribly hard either). At one stage, I was looking at trying to get numeric plates to go on the van, but didn't have much success, bearing in mind it cost me $600 in 2003 for the rights to the one's on my FX. Cheers Steve

Hi All, I found this list in the back of a book that my Uncle gave me. It's a Glass' Dealers Guide from 1969 and lists every car available in Australia from 195? to 1969. It might be of some help? Todd
