Hi Gilbert,
Interesting to hear about your BiTone van. After stopping building vans on their own account in 1968, BiTone acted as agents for other manufacturers, and may have also sold second hand vans as well. So possibly your van was a Modern that was re-badged as a BiTone? Or maybe it is what it says - a BiTone?
Are you able to post some photos of the van in question? If you're not used to posting photos, I can post them for you if you email them to me at caravanhistory@gmail.com

Hi all 😀
I'm new here. I've been looking for our old caravan I grew up in, to see if it was still alive, just fir interest and memories, more so fir my parents as they age. I know it was a modern brand van, bought in around 1972ish in Perth WA.
We travelled Oz in it for at least 5 years, a few tines around. We were I Darwin, cyclone Tracey and it survived that, with us in it.... quite a ride! I have vague memories of it.
Anyone seen a two door approx 27ft? Modern anywhere around?
Thanks!

Hi Thebuchans, Welcome to the forum. It's great to hear about your travels with your parents in your Modern. Living through Cyclone Tracey must have been an incredible - and scary - experience! Did your caravan end up back in WA? If so, and you use Facebook, I suggest you contact the 'Just Retro Caravans' page on Facebook. It's a page owned by a chap in WA who retrieves, refurbishes and sells vintage and classic caravans. If it's around he may have seen it. He has a pretty incredible knowledge and has seen a lot of vans. Good luck with your search. It would be great if you can find it. Do you have any photos of it so that we know what it looks like? There's info on how to post photos on the Forum here. 'Add Attachment' is the easiest way to do it, but just note the extra step you need to take to make the button appear on your phone. Don Ricardo

MODERN CARAVANSManufactured by Peter Formiatti (born 1900 in Italy) Wanneroo Road, Tuart Hill and later Bassendean, Western Australia here is a Modern Van the name is Modern manufactured in Perth w.a.in 1958 Brian Noble (noblesgarage) a member has totally restored the van inside and out The original owner of Modern was an immigrant from Italy yugoslavia was assisted to buy the land by the goverment on the main rd from perth to wanneroo the address being Wanneroo rd tuart hill approximately 5 kilometres from central perth it was established in the early fiftys and the land was sold for several million dollars in 1997 approx 1 acre when the owner retired Modern was closed down the business was a successful venture for 40 years and the land made an excellent retirement fund Will Editorial note: Information posted on the forum subsequently about Modern caravans (see below) has indicated that Noblesgarage's Modern is quite a bit newer than 1958, the date provided by Willyn. The van is most probably late 60's, and possibly 1968 rather than 1958. Don Ricardo

Hi everyone. I've been contemplating the idea of refurbishing an old caravan to make it look like a modern one. I'm curious about the feasibility of this endeavor and the potential features that could bring it in line with modern caravans.

Hi everyone. I've been contemplating the idea of refurbishing an old caravan to make it look like a modern one. I'm curious about the feasibility of this endeavor and the potential features that could bring it in line with modern caravans. Good afternoon Soahib, I've read your two posts and am not quite sure where you're coming from. Are you considering buying an old van (your first post) and thinking that the car detailer may be able to help you modernise the van (your second post)? Or do you own the car detailing business and seeking to attract some customers? Either way, this Forum is probably not the best place for you to be seeking advice and/or customers. There are, to be sure, some Forum members who have added some modern comforts and features to their Vintage (pre-1970) caravans, but essentially the Forum is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Vintage caravans, including maintaining their original features, not modernising them. Regarding the car detailing business, while they may be able to assist with polishing the external cladding of some of the aluminium clad caravans, and cleaning an old van internally, they probably won't have the carpentry and wood working skills, etc, required to restore or even modernise an older van. You have possibly posted on this thread about 'Modern Caravans Perth' thinking it was about modernising older caravans? In fact Modern Caravans was actually a caravan manufacturer that built vans branded with the name Modern from the 50's through to the 70's. A bit confusing I know, but just think of Modern as a brand name like, say, Jayco, etc. If you do want to buy an old van to modernise there are quite a few pages on Facebook telling the stories of people who have modernised their vans. However, there are also lots of people on Facebook with caravans that have been totally gutted inside, and they are now trying to sell the caravan as a shell. The number of people giving up on their projects tells you that rebuilding or completely modernising a caravan is actually much harder than it looks at first, so that's something to bear in mind. As a bunch of people who are interested in the history, preservation and restoration of Vintage caravans, we'd certainly like to encourage you down that route, although we understand that may not be your goal.
