Hi Pitts Doubtful you have any luck with your question here as this site is dedicated to PRE 1970 vintage vans, you'll be better off joining and posting this question on classic caravans.com which is a site dedicated to post 1970 caravans regards Jenno

Hi Pitts, From memory your van was made by a caravan repairer in Fern Tree Gully in Melbourne by a caravan repairer that built them as a sideline, there were more than two built ,as I have seen at least two for sale recently, pops and full vans. Something is telling me the company might have been called Overlander caravans, but I could be wrong. Cheers Hughdeany

I have not been able to find a single picture or any documentation anywhere about this model. It's a great little van and a slightly different shape than most, so I'm sure I'll get asked about its history at some stage. Cheers

Hi Pitts, The vans I have seen were all different, just keep watching all the for sale sites and they come up occasionally. I have seen at least 2 in the flesh, and they were well built ( as a repairer would in down time with no rush on building) IHoward Dunn from caravan city in Melbourne owned the Wayfarer name for a while and put it on Regency ( not the same company as today) and Roven caravans and sold from his yard,he must have on sold the name to the repairer . Cheers Hughdeany ps,I have just found a pic of a Wayfarer caravan built by the same company,pm me so I can send it to you.( not tech savvy enough to put on here.) Photos of Wayfarer van referred to above. It appears to be a smaller version of Pitts’ van.

Hi Pitts,
Welcome to the forum, and thanks for showing us your van.
Hughdeany has an extraordinary knowledge of the caravan industry so I’d be almost 100% certain that he’s pointing you in the right direction. However, I can add a bit to what he’s told you.
The caravan building firm that he referred to is actually called ‘Overlanda’, not Overlander. Gerald, the owner of the business, did his apprenticeship (or part of it) with Wayfarer before it closed in 1970, and at some point bought the rights to the Wayfarer name - hence I am assuming your Wayfarer van.
The Overlanda business is still operating, and is based in Ararat in Victoria. You’ll be able to find them via Google or the phone book. Last time I heard, Overlanda was still building custom designed, one-off vans, now branded as Overlanda. They also do repair work, and Gerald really loved doing restoration work on some of the original Wayfarer vans.
Hopefully you can get in contact with Overlanda and find out a bit more about your van. If you do, please come back to the forum and tell us what you discover.
As Jennison has said, the focus of this forum is pre-1970 vans, but your van is such an interesting extension of the Wayfarer story that we’ll be very glad to hear from you.
Don Ricardo

I very much appreciate all the info provided, and I'll update with any future info I find out. Many Thanks

Hi danniellebp. Good to hear you own a Wayfarer. All the information about Wayfarers that's been gathered over the years is in this thread, so scroll through it. If you have a specific question, perhaps ask it by starting a thread on the General Section of this site.

Hi all, The Wayfarer caravan story has more twists and turns than most, with a variety of manufacturers using the brand-name over the decades. The Wayfarer brand was first introduced in 1955 or 1956 by the Chapman family after they purchased a caravan dealership. Sadly their business was bankrupted in 1969 after a sole agency arrangement for the sale of Wayfarer caravans with Reg Hunt Holden failed. The Wayfarer name was then sold off to a string of new owners. Following are some photos of a Wayfarer branded caravan produced by Majestic Caravans in Melbourne from 1976 to 1977 until Majestic folded. The photos are from a Gumtree listing in July 2021: Of course this Majestic built Wayfarer was built in the Classic Caravans era rather than the Vintage Caravans period, but it is interesting to see how the brand name has survived. Higher up this thread is an even more modern Wayfarer branded caravan, built by Regency. The Wayfarer name is now owned by Overlanda Caravans in Ararat, Victoria. The good thing about that is that Overlanda has a fine appreciation for vintage caravans and the vintage era Wayfarers, and has undertaken restoration work on a number of them. Thanks to Hughdeany for sending me the link for the Majestic built Wayfarer and telling me that aspect of the Wayfarer story. Don Ricardo

Hi Taxiboy, Welcome to the forum. Hopefully we can tell you something about your van. I'm trying to check out your photos via Google drive and have asked for access, but not everyone will know how to do that. There is info on how to post photos on the forum if you click here. The easiest way to post photos is via the 'Add Attachment' button in the 'Create Post' window. There are instructions on how to do that via the link I've given you, but because you're posting from your mobile please note that there's an extra step to make the button appear (which is not hard, just annoying!). Alternatively, if you'd like to email me your photos, I'll post them for you and then we can see what we can tell you. My email is: caravanhistory@gmail.com Don Ricardo

Photo of Taxiboy's Wayfarer caravan posted on their behalf:
Taxiboy,
Your caravan is a Wayfarer from the late 50's. During that period, Wayfarer used to source its caravans from several different places including interstate manufacturers. However, as best we know at this point, these aluminium clad vans were built by Wayfarer itself.
There's not many of this model of Wayfarer around, so it will be pretty cool if you are able to deal with its problems and restore it. How complete is the inside?
