Good afternoon brains trust. Any ideas? It is 2.5m (8ft) body - 3.5m (11ft) including draw. I sanded it back and found a franklin old sticker which disintegrated but the glue was still there when sanded lightly. Had Franklin at top and caravans underneath that. app.photobucket.com/u/jakevic/a/9588e4f6-1ba0-44e7-9948-5b04c51b3741Bought this over two years ago, still working on it towards rego'd.. small steps. Thanks team. Jake

Hi Jacob, Yes,I can see the pics! It’s positively definitely not a Franklin though! It looks like a homemade van made with Franklin Thermopanel aluminium, possibly from a wreck, that’s why it has the sticker on it. Franklin we’re the only company to use that profile as they made it in house to suit their sandwich panel walls. The push out window on the door side is also Franklin, but not the wind out.The door is Franklin but has been cut down.Did you buy it complete? It’s an interesting little van for a small car. Franklin also never made an 8 ft van, their smallest was 10.6x7. Hope this helps Cheers hughdeany

Thanks hughdeany,
That's a shame! I was hoping it was so then I would get a year on it.
It was semi gutted when I collected it from a small hobby farm/winery a couple year ago in Victoria, the young couple bought it from a family in the area who had it for some time.
It only had a chassis number not a vin. It had pine panneling with the foam underlay glued to the aluminium panelling. Hopefully when I do go to rego Vic roads will have something on file for it. Different rules for it depending on age.. here's hoping.

Hi again Jacob, Your van didn’t have a vin number because they weren’t in use until 1989,if you’re in VIC the rego office will give it a vin number if they can’t find the original chassis number. The window, door and aluminium are from 1969 onwards,so the reg mob probably won’t find out it’s origin anyway. Cheers hughdeany

So thankfully the caravan is now registered. Unfortunately my left window imploded on the way to Vic roads for some reason. Still passed.
Will need to replace with perplex now. Any recommendations where I can get it from?
It's around 945mmx576mm?

Hi Jacob, Glad to hear the van is now registered, what brand did you choose? What was involved to register it,as it will help a lot on here that need to go through it in VIC. Shame about the window,Perspex is available from glaziers, and they can cut it to size. Cheers hughdeany

So I called VIC Roads first after hearing someone have a few issues with registering. Got it weighed, Found out they had the chassis number on their old register (thankfullly). I didn't have any details on me. Filled out the light trailer form as total weight was 580kg. Had 2 amber side reflectors on each side front and back, had 2 white ones on front, two red on back although the indicators had them part of it, just did it anyway. It is under 2.1m (More reflectors needed if wider - Clearance) wide and under 4.5m long. I booked it in.
The person didn't know much about caravans.. couldn't find the chassis number on their normal database, maybe didn't know about the old one or how to use it? I told her about the rules for caravans prior to 1989.. she seemed overall confused it didn't have a VIN, even her manager. She still issued a licence plate and registered it as a 1900 caravan.. I intend calling back the bloke I spoke to on the phone who seemed to know a bit more and able to find the chassis number on file and have him email through those details and fix up the file a bit..so plate doesn't need displaying and actually get a proper year on it. She was nice enough.. just not sure of it all.. it's registered now.

Hi Jacob, Thanks for that, seems that nothing has changed, they still don’t have a clue! 1900 is the go to number for unknown, lots of Caravans registered like this, which is why so many people get confused and unscrupulous sellers can use it to their advantage by saying the year is a different number. So what was the chassis number aligned to?

Not sure what you meaning Hugh? They just winged it and registered it. I have to reach out and ask for Blake on vic roads number as he was actually able to find the old chassis record and ask him to send it through. They registered it under the Chassis number and as 1900.. Caravan.
I was quite surprised because, if they couldn't find old file.. how do they know the trailer is even fit for purpose? That's why I confirmed they had an old record before going in as my line of thinking all the details from first registering it should be captured. Have to wait for next business day now to hopefully track down this Blake bloke. I don't mind if it is a 1988 caravan.. but I would like to know when it was built ect that's part of the charm so I'll keep pushing to update the file to what it actually is.

You are registered........let sleeping dogs lie.
Our van is a 60s Walden Sunliner ,photos, history, extracts......all to no avail, its registered as a 2021 Homebuild , best I could do, at least its on the road.

Hi Jdazzle, Hughdeany is no doubt close to the mark (because he always is ), but if you can tell us the serial number on the drawbar, we can confirm the year from that. Don Ricardo
