What do people use now under the aluminium strips around the edges on plywood vans and where do you buy it?
Looks like it has some gooey tape stuff before.

Hi fccool, J Strip sealing is really effective if you remove the strip, thoroughly clean & apply sealer from the inside out. Butt sealing or trying to squeeze new sealer in from the side with the old gunk is only tempory.
Its a contest here to use "mastic" easily removed after a few years or "silicone" which can last the life of the van if used properly, as above.
If silicone needs to be removed its a nightmare. Some images posted would be an advantage to advice given. Cheers Mustang

Hi all, I have asked this on another thread but possibly not an active one, trying again here. I am resealing the aluminium moulding around the bottom of my bondwood, the top section under the moulding looks like it has “Deniso 510 tape” under it. I inherited a pack of it from the spare parts box, looks the same. I am going to use butyl mastic on the bottom section (looks like it never had this tape) after researching this site, but anyone used this tape before? With thanks 🙏🏻. *Update, bunnings didn’t have Butyl Mastic, I got persuaded to use Sikaflex Pro+. I’ll examine my late Dad’s ancient collection of Selley caulking material tomorrow, and might use some of that instead. Still soft. His ancient Butyl mastic hard as a rock.

If you can still find the Selleys D Mastic (black printing on green background) where you are, then I would do it. I used to know a large caravan repairer near Taree NSW who only used it too. The Sikaflex that SGTL suggests is good too, from what I've heard, but is quite a bit more expensive.
Ps. Make sure you have plenty of turps around - like most of this stuff, it's a bugger to clean off.

Sorry to be a pain, but I can’t see SGTL’s suggestion? I bought Sikaflex Pro+, the Bunning’s guy assured me it would be ok but….others have written about Sikaflex bonding to surfaces with might, I don’t want that. Happy new year if you are in the eastern states 😊.

Sikaflex pro is what SGTL suggested and I'm pretty sure is what she uses every restoration she has done a restoration. Happy new year to you too

Reading back through this thread has jogged my failing memory. I have used a leak seal tape on a few vans. Easy to apply & paintable. You have to hunt very hard to find a reasonable price & the correct product. May be called leak seal tape, butyl mastic tape or waterproofing tape. It's a grey putty like substance with a bandage type backing. Duram & Gripset are 2 brands. I haven't been able to find one narrower than 80mm but I guess you could cut it in half with the right tools. I have always used the following from feeBay but hopefully have found a cheaper one from 'The Water Stop Shop' in Oakleigh or Demtech Australia. www.ebay.com.au/itm/221787711159
