I'm restoring an early Globe. Year of manufacture a bit uncertain but she has chassis number 287. Part of the coupling is missing - the 'bolt' which comes up through the hitch from below the ball and has a knurled nut on top with a lock nut on top of that. It's a large towball 2 1/8 I think Can anyone help me with this, or where I might find one? (I don't want to replace the hitch if possible because it has the chassis number stamped on it) I'm also looking for any original exterior lights, particularly the clearance lights both front and rear. The restoration is well underway and I will post some pictures of 'Thelma' when she's completed. Thanks for any help George Smith 0414 847 754

For safety's sake you would be better off putting a new tow hitch on your van. I have removed a couple of these, including one from a Globe caravan. You are welcome to it but I cannot remember what condition it was in or if it was complete. SGTL

Hi there TrueBlue
This is my first post so I'm not sure how I get in touch with you but I would certainly like to get hold of the missing part. Perhaps you could give me a call to see what we can arrange. Many thanks George Smith 0414 847 754

Hi Thelma I agree with SGTL, for safety sake, it should be replaced. In fact, in some states, the old hitches would not pass roadworthy, so it may be an idea to check this in your state. I suspect that the number on the hitch is more likely the model number of the hitch itself, rather than the chassis number. If this number has been used as the chassis number, it would not be difficult to punch the same number onto the chassis/drawbar and replace the hitch.

Hi Roehm3108,
if you look you will see 603 on the hitch, I think this is a part number, not a chassis number. However, if you look carefully there is another number stamped on the hitch as well - 287 - this is likely to be the chassis number George is concerned about.
I do agree that a newer type/style of coupling would be preferable rather than the original Globe item. If George was concerned with having a more period style of hitch rather than a modern Chinese one there are plenty of options available out there. I have a couple of "vintage" 50mm period style hitches available if so.
He could stamp his original number somewhere on the drawbar or on a replacement hitch but it is possible that the original chassis number won't be able to be used for rego, at least in Victoria. My Clipper had to have a new VIN number because VicRoads said there were already several trailers with the same chassis number as my original one - 369.

The 603 is the tow hitch model & I think the 287 is the van model? If so, it would make this Globe very early. The hitch I removed from mine had 603 & 713. Not a clear picture, sorry. But there are other examples of Globe tow hitches on this forum with 603 on them. This is Redmr2red's farm2.staticflickr.com/1780/43042921004_9e5737a31d_c.jpg

Thanks TrueBlue Depending on the ball size this could be exactly what I'm looking for I'm not sure if it's 2 1/4 or 2 1/8, my veneer caliper says mine 54.9mm so probably 2 1/8? Any idea of the size in the pictures? Looks like it was bolted on so an easy change, mine's welded so a pain in the neck to change.
