Hi all. First Van. First time on here. First thread. So, go easy on me and offer as much info on anything you like. Just purchased what appears to be be a Carapark Bondwood from somewhere 1950's. Had a tin water tank but my Dad ( who may be even older than the vv 😉) said to rip it out in case of rust or someone contaminating it. Whilst I am going for an original look on the van, it doesn't have to stay truly original. So, thoughts on what I should do re water tank...somehow clean and retain or new plastic one.. Thank you. PS. On very tight budget!

Hello & welcome Varns. There are several things you can do regarding your water tank. The cheapest option is to flush it out a few times, plug any holes & use it! Of course, if rust keeps coming out then it has probably had it's day & you will have to replace. I have replaced three water tanks. 2 with stainless steel which is quite expensive & one internal one that was folded up out of gal by a local plumber. An engineering works did the stainless ones for me. You can always go the plastic option & they are readily available online or at caravan retailers. Would love to see some photos of your van.
Cheers, SGTL

Hi Varns, is the water tank visible? ie on the kitchen wall - if so get a new one made to match the original, any plumber should be able to do this.
My Clipper has its tank under one of the beds so you cannot see it,I fitted a new plastic one there as you cannot see it.
If it is under the van you can go either repro tank to match original or plastic if it fits your needs better.
Leigh.

Hi shesgotthelook and sportsman1.
Thank you for all your advice. The tank is beneath the dining seat so the look factor doesn't count. I think I will test the metal one but then see myself leaning towards the plastic one.
I will try to figure how to upload some photos.
Have a safe Easter.

Yep, safest and cleanest option - new plastic under the seat, quite a variety of sizes and shapes available from most caravan spares outlets - try ebay to get an idea of sizes and prices. I cheated a little and mounted a 12v pump next to the tank and plumbed it up to the original pump/tap/outlet on the sink. I gutted the insides of the original pump to allow water to flow straight through it ,it was shot internally so could not be rebuilt and fitted a 1950's switch to power up the new electric pump, result is it all looks original and I get clean fresh water whenever I need it.
