2020 VINTAGE CARAVAN NATIONALS [POSTPONED]
COCKLE TRAIN & GOOLWA MUSEUMS - Wednesday, 6 May
COCKLE TRAIN & GOOLWA MUSEUMS - Wednesday, 6 May
Wednesday is the day to experience some of the many attractions to be found in Goolwa, a 19 kilometre drive from the Nationals venue. Not all of the following activities operate every day of the week, but Wednesday is the day they are all open!
You can visit the attractions whenever you want during the day, and travel from Victor Harbor to Goolwa on the Cockle Train if you wish (see below). However, the various locations in Goolwa are some distance apart, so we are suggesting that you drive your car to Goolwa so that you can get between the locations easily, but it's up to you how you do it.
MORNING - COCKLE TRAIN RIDE FROM GOOLWA TO VICTOR HARBOR & RETURN
The Cockle Train is operated by the Steam Ranger Heritage Railway, and commences its run at Goolwa station, in the historic Wharf Precinct alongside the River Murray. After crossing the main Goolwa to Victor road the line heads off across the plains to Middleton and then to Port Elliot where it reaches the Encounter Bay coast. After leaving Port Elliot the train climbs to the top of the coastal cliffs and passengers then experience some of the most picturesque coastal scenery on the Fleurieu Peninsula, with nothing separating you from the beach below and a perfect view of the Southern Ocean - in winter the home of Southern Right Whale. After a 30 minute journey the train edges into Victor Harbor station, right in the centre of the town and surrounded with its iconic pine trees. Here, the locomotive is detached from the carriages and turned on our specially retained 30m long electric turntable before rejoining the carriages for the return journey to Goolwa. (Be aware that some trains are headed by diesel locomotives rather than steam.)
There are a number of Cockle Trains running during the day, but the Steam Ranger Heritage Railway has offered us a special price for a return trip on the 10 am train from Goolwa to Victor Harbor and return, on Wednesday, 6 May.
Depart Goolwa Station - 10.00 am (please arrive at the station 30 minutes before departure)
Arrive Victor Harbor - 10.30 am
Depart Victor Harbor - 11.00 am
Arrive Goolwa - 11.30 am
COST: $28.00 per adult (including seniors); $16.00 per child 4+ year; children under 4 are free (This is a special price for VV Nationals attendees. Normal ticket price for 'non-senior' adults is $32.00).
BOOKINGS: Bookings and payments, no later than Tuesday, 31 March - but please book ASAP.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW: Please book and pay in advance for the Cockle Train as follows:
1. Make a payment per head based on the prices above (see 'Cost') by bank transfer or direct deposit into the following account:
Account name: R & G Dickins
Bank: Bendigo Bank
Account: 172 476 301
Very important: Include 'Train' and your name/Vintage Caravans forum username as the reference for the payment.
2. Send me a PM (Personal Message) or post on this thread, to tell us that:
- you've made the bank payment,
- how many adults, children 4+, and children under 4 you are booking for (it's important to include children under 4 years of age, because although they go free, they still require a seat),
- the name shown on the bank payment.
3. Your booking will be confirmed in a list on this thread. Bookings will not be finally accepted until payment has been received.
What if I'm not able to attend after booking? Cancellations will be accepted up until Tuesday, 31 March, and a refund arranged. After that date cancellations and refunds will only be made if you (not the Nationals team) can find someone to take your place on the train. The Nationals team has to make a payment in advance to the Railway, and doesn't have the funds available to cover late cancellations. We trust you will understand.
NOTE: If you wish to take the train at another time, or travel from Victor Harbor to Goolwa and return, bookings can be made through the Victor Harbor Visitor Information Centre - 08 8551 0776 (tell them you're with the Vintage Caravan Nationals group), or via the Steam Ranger website.
