Hi all, been a long time since i've posted here. Still got the Valiant caravan, its loved, apreicated and used as much as I can.
I have just been offered a Viscount Aerolite in reasonable condition. Not sure how old it is, as it seems to be a very early model. Chassis number is 50903. It could be as early as a 1979 model, not sure.
Any ideas on how to date it ?

Hi fireballv8, Your Aerolite will be 84 onwards, that’s when they started. Originally with a wooden frame, then aluminium frame then sandwich panel. The chassis is only an A frame that extends to the rear of the van, with a sheet of plywood sitting on top of that to which the corner jacks are bolted straight through the wooden floor, the high tensile “chassis” was prone to damage if towed with a 4WD or over rough terrain,it was really only a black top Tourer. If you look at the expansion joint above the door you can see how hard a life it’s had dependant on how much of a bend it has! This was mainly on the longer vans, the 15 fters I have seen were ok.Some Aerolites were also badged Ultralight for some strange reason, which confuses buyers no end theses days. They were only around for about 2-3 years before the demise of the original Viscount company. Also,if you can pick up the front of the A frame beware of how light on vans tow,can get a bit hairy! Cheers hughdeany

Thanks for that info. Its 16 foot 6 inches long, cant see any cracks in chassis, but plenty of rot in the back of the floor. fixing that now. its missing a wind down leg at the rear, been taken off to do a repair on floor, but I'm replacing the whole back of floor, so if I could find one of the different looking legs that this van used, that would be great
