Hi vintage caravan friends! I’m new to the forum and about to take delivery of a 1963 Skyline and it has the original larger imperial measurement ball type hitch with a screw down top section for attachment. I’ve been advised to replace this due to it not meeting Aussie standards and probably not being as safe as a modern hitch. Is this common? Recommended? Not frowned upon? I like everything as original as possible but this was one area I’m ok with modifying. Any thoughts appreciated

I personally have replaced several older style tow hitches with standard modern ones. Several reasons, number one being safety & secondly so that I have the same sized ball for all things towing on the farm.
I don't know the road rules for each state regarding tow hitches.
Cheers, SGTL

It is certainly illegal to use a two piece ball. If you have a one piece ball of the correct dimension for the hitch then no particular problem, if the original hitch is in good condition and working properly it should be ok.
If you want to go 50mm ball you might want to look at finding a standard 50mm tow hitch off an older van or trailer. Depending on what you can find this will give you an old looking hitch with the convenience (and safety/legality) of a new ball.
I got an over-ride hitch ball mount and shaft off an old trailer and fitted it to my 1955 Clipper in place of the original Treg hitch shaft. A little engineering (shorten the shaft and run a new thread on it for the locking nut) but works a treat and looks origididgeish!

Great, thankyou... I plan on repainting the draw bar and hitch anyway so it would “blend in” in that’s sense
