I have an old "YORK" van in my backyard which I would like to smarten up and use. The chassis No. is Y5020 so is it a 1970 build??. It has been gutted completely but the outside is in quite good condition. All widows ar 3 blade wind-out style. How do you measure the length, the actual floor length or the over-all outside over the bulges and bumps and between perpendiculars. If I could understand all this cyber-speak I would post some pics of the thing thanks from rayman

Hello & welcome boatknut, the length for selling purposes is front to back & for registration purposes from the tow hitch to the back.

G'day boatknut,
Forum member "twocutekelpies" (Shelley) will come along and tell you the year of your van. I'm thinking around 1975, but she can be more accurate. The windows are generally known as "louvre windows", and were used on both the Millard and York models in the first half of the 1970s.
We have a sister forum for caravans built in the 1970s, and you are welcome to join over there if you wish: ditzygypsy.proboards.com/
cheers, Al.

Hi Boatknut, I'd go 1973 for that number based on the numbers collated so far. I have Y3845 with a build date of 14/3/72, the numbers were consecutive so very hard to work out year from them. (The date is found handwritten behind the ply around the front windows) This is the link to mine, it's a little earlier than the louvre windows ditzygypsy.proboards.com/thread/4665/1972-york-chassis-restoration-y3845I used flickr to upload my photos then link them in my posts, there is more info here on how to post photos - ditzygypsy.proboards.com/thread/4420/post-photos-on-forumI believe length is taken from from to back along the side, 12" up from floor height excluding drawbar, just body. I haven't checked this against mine yet, mine had 107-3 written with the chassis number for 10ft long 7ft wide, layout #3. Cheers Shelley

Hi folks, thanks for the replies, I was on here several years ago but gave up with trying to post pics, just nothing makes sense to me, I think I am just too old to learn. My van is in reasonably good condition, it was bought for a 20 year old child who gradually destroyed it so he could satisfy a craving. He cut all the wiring out along with the furniture and it was later given to me.I think it is 17ft long and has wind down stabilizers at all four corners. Does anybody know how to remove and repair the louver window mechanism?? none of mine work at all, some are open and some are shut and the skylight vent raises straight up and down. Also are the door hinges repairable? I have to lift the door to open and close, it looks like they are badly worn.
thanks again. rayman

Hi 2ck, I just downloaded your posts on the other site, don't have time to read it all right now. I am at Tin Can Bay but you say in a later post you have moved, can I ask where to? very far away? I intend to just re-wire for 12v. any 240 appliances can be on a lead out in the annex. Just refilled my 9kg gas bottle yesterday $35 wow what a steal, Measured my York, it is 15'6" from the vertical front panel below the window to the bustle on the back. have to go now, regards rayman

Hi 2CK, that's not far really, you're still local, I would like to swing by sometime, I am impressed by your handywork and ability to "geterdun" I will not be striving for such excellence, just a good cleanup and the furniture will be from the house. Why?? because I have it, that's all. regards and thanks--ray
