Oh this has been a journey.
Finished the exterior painting. Looking pretty special...and fresh!
Rebuilding the windows and door. They’ve been restored. Beading to go on and whack on the hinges and fit. I’ll need to do the weather seals too now paint is almost cured.
Then it’s finish off the fit of the exterior lights, number plate bracket and clearance lights.
So close to finished.
Looking for a little 10 foot don as next project but will do a road trip until found!

Windows are in. A few patch ups required. I’d painted in the hinge housing. Lesson learned.
Now my beautiful don is almost ready to hit the road with its glorious windows, I’m concerned about damaging it!!! Not planing on hooning about but those windows would be tricky to repair and will avoid if possible.
What are some of you doing to avoid stones hitting the windows while in transit? Hoping for some inspiration in keeping with the era?
Wish I could share a pic. A bit proud of the 1955 Don!

Hi there fellow don folk,
Having hit the road and parked my don in a caravan park (an incredible feeling of joy and satisfaction) I see there is more to do. An awning is required. Looking at awning attachment options. What was the standard attaching method back in the day and what are don’s looking like with awnings?
Can you share?

Hi KCK, Great to hear that you’ve been out and about in your Don! That’s fantastic news. I agree with your conclusion about an awning. The shelter it provides in hot/sunny or wet conditions makes it very worthwhile, and it also has an amazing ability to create an extra sense of “your space” around the van. Back in the day, awnings/annexes were attached to Don caravans by a series of turnbuttons screwed to the roof of the van, and eyelets attached to the edge of the canvas. This pic shows a turnbutton and the two parts of the eyelets which attach to the canvas: The awning is still attached to our Don the same way: This is a new awning we had made last year by a fellow in Tottenham. It uses the turnbuttons that were attached to the van for its original annexe. The turnbuttons down the side wall of the van are a different type and are used to attach the walls of a full annexe that we still have to the caravan. You can see photos of the original annexe for our van, and also the larger replacement we had made in 1983 here. Don Ricardo

KCK, I think you have done very well, best of luck with the freshen up. JD. “Tidy up” was a joke. It needed more than a dust off
