Usually you will need a weighbridge tare weight ticket, gas certificate & roadworthy, they will inspect lights. Just call ACT transport department & ask what else you will need. To get to the weighbridge there is a permit of 24 hours for an unregistered vehicle.

Hi Ted, In the ACT you will have two options. 1) If you can establish evidence of the previous registration (i.e. a copy of registration papers) then you can go to a ACT authorised inspection station which is usually your local service station and they will inspect and pass it for you. 2) If you cannot provide evidence of previous registration you will need to take what paperwork you have(receipts, copy of advertising where you bought it, photos) and do the following ; Hitch up the van and obtain weighbridge ticket. There are a number of locations Mugga Tip and some of the firewood sellers are approved. You will need to disconnect the van from the car on the weighbridge to get the correct weight. Make two bookings (can be on same day) at the new ACT Government Inspection station which is now located at Hume for a Identity Check and a Roadworthy Inspection. Make sure that you make both bookings regardless of what they tell you on the phone and you will pay a small fee on the inspection day for each. All being well you will pay a bunch of money and be on your way. You do not need gas or electrical inspection certificates. If they choose to enforce it you will need a fire extinguisher and a smoke detector in the van. You do not need a permit to move the unregistered van as long as it is being towed by a currently registered vehicle and being moved by the most direct route for the purpose of repairs and registration. Obviously life will be easier for you if the van is roadworthy with all lights and brakes working, safety chain and good tyres. The process is not as hard as it sounds but you are dealing with public servants so be prepared for anything .......stay calm.
