I have done a crazy but very exciting thing. It all started when I saw a van for sale on Facebook. I showed it to my husband and he said it looked a bit old for his liking. He prefers the look of the aluminium window frames rather than the wooden. So I didn't express my interest in it. A week later I said to my husband that the van had sold and I regret not buying it. Then when I saw it was still available I showed the picture to my husband again and showed him some pictures of Bondwood van's with wooden frames that had been restored. He agreed they looked good and we should buy it!!! So, many phone calls, messages and sleepless nights later....... The van is on a truck and will arrive in Melbourne on the weekend. It will hopefully arrive in Tasmania next week. There have been some dramas with transport. The tow hitch was not attached, it had three flat tyres and was not in an accessible spot (all these things the seller had assured me were sorted out). The van needed to have a tow hitch and wheels that roll as it is towed onto the boat. I have been told I will be getting charged extra from the transport company for their time to rectify these problems. I haven't seen the van, all I have seen is photos. But, I believe that it is something quite unique. Here is a photo of it all wrapped up like a present!!! I will post more photos when it arrives. Or if you don't hear from me again, it has all gone horribly wrong!!!!

Hi Gordo,
Lets make it happen. How about summer time on the East Coast? Sorry but I can't bring myself to suggest the West Coast. When we first moved to Tassie from WA, my husband spent most of his time working in Queenstown. My eldest daughter was a baby at the time and we went along with him a few times. We stayed in a depressing little cabin in a caravan park and it rained the whole time. I have since been back with my now older children and stayed in a nice B&B but it rained the whole time and was freezing.
Melani.

I would guess you are using Toll Sea Freight & not the Spirit? I would be interested in the cost of freight for a van only by your method from Vic to Tas. Cheers Brent

Gday Brent.I would think ringing Toll would be the way to go.However as for me - 3 x 20 footers packed/loaded/delivered/unloaded was just shy of 20K through my removals company in Sydney > Toll Melbourne > Burnie > then roaded > Q/town via Sydney removal companys partners.Absolutely first class service from all concerned. No issues whatsoever. Oh yes,Toll own their own cargo vessels.Forget the ferry. gordo

Well, the van is now in Burnie and will be delivered Tuesday morning!!!
Gordo, I just had a look at your new house, what a great buy. My husband used to travel to Queenstown for work often, but since the mine has gone into Care and Maintenance he doesn't go as often. Next time he does, I might tag along and drop by.
Brent, I used a company called MAH Logistics in Burnie. He organised all the various transport companies for me, for cheaper than I could organise it myself. It has been a real headache for him but he has been great and kept me constantly updated. The total cost was going to be $3,965.00 Boyne Island, Qld to Hobart door to door delivery (but now it will be more for the tyres, wrapping, tow hitch installation and an extra truck to get it off the sellers property). I don't have an exact breakdown but he used Sea Roads as he said he could get a cheaper price with them than Toll. Unmanned on the Spirit is $1,750- & Sea Roads was less (I think it was about) $1,500-. Sea Roads depot are in Burnie rather than Devonport. The van has to be in a towable condition as they use a ute to tow it from the dock onto the ship and they will not take the van if it has anything that could potentially fall off, hence why my van had to be wrapped.

I believe I have found your van in a 2014 thread on here that nobody responded to! I won't steal your thunder though

Murray, No audience, just me trying to figure out how to get the van in my driveway, it may just have to sit on the road until Matthew gets home from work. They are unsure what size truck will be coming, it may be too large to reverse down a drive. Front rows seats can been reserved for you!! The grand unveiling won't be until Sunday as this is my first week back at Uni and we have Sian's birthday party on Saturday. Why didn't it arrive last week, while I was on Uni break, kids were sick and I was sitting around twiddling my thumbs?
Lindsey, you have me intrigued. Can I have the link to the thread?
Gordo, PM sent.

Well Mel so glad you settled for a non itchy restoration! Congrats on the new arrival but don't keep us in suspenders where's the pics!!! It took me ages to work out what non itchy meant!!! A fibreglass van came up the same day that we decided to buy this van, we decided to go ahead with the bondwood. If it all goes wrong, I have you to blame!!!!!!!

Will be up soon for a sticky - looking great from the photos Murray (itch, itch) Clementine has been temporarily relocated to a friends house. She will return once we have worked out how to fit them both in the driveway. I think we might widen the drive so that we don't have to move one to get the other one out. I need to move to the country where I can have a big shed!

Well ...I expected worse.. you have a year in front of you, not counting Hobart,s winter. It might pay to construct a temporary tarp shelter (neighbors permitting) to keep that roof dry. It will be beautiful & very individual Well Done

Our other van (Clementine) will get plenty of use while the new van is being restored. The temporary shelter is already on my to do list. I am very jealous of the photo of your two vans sitting all tucked up in a shed!!

Would anyone like to guess or offer advice on finding out the age of this van?
I am guessing a 1940's Homemade.
It has a wooden chassis, with a metal A frame??? Not sure if I used all the correct terminology.
All I know from the seller, is that the previous owner died in an Industrial fire. He left his house and its belongings to his sister. His sister rented out the house for 10 years with the van sitting under a carport. The house was then sold to the lady that I bought the van from. I have the name of the sister that inherited the van and plan to write to her, to see if she has any info. She is an artist and painted the mural in the van.
