Yes Mustang, bought it a couple of months ago. Accompanied friends to look at another van the man was selling, got to check out all his vans & I made him an offer on this one.. Mr SGTL just walked away shaking his head. The more research I did, the more convinced I was as to it's rarity & historical significance. Anyway, just had to have it & here it is!

I have always been amazed as to how you can heat enough water to have a nice warm bath and relax. Big kettle?

G'day SGTL, That's really good news! Just great to know that that van is in the hands of someone who understands its historical significance (which is not to say that the previous owner didn't). It also explains why you were posting about early Viscounts a few weeks/months ago... Should have known something was happening! I reckon your new van must be amongst the earliest Viscounts, although the advert you've shown us which seems to match it very closely refers to both Adelaide and Cabramatta, so must have been printed after John Carr made the decision to relocate to Sydney. A fantastic piece of caravan history. Congratulations - and no flames painted on the sides! I presume (hope?) you will copy the photos to the DHL Viscount thread... Don Ricardo

Funny you say that Mustang. Mr SGTL reckons we should do the bare minimum for registration & get out about with it before restoration!

SGTL I used clear plastic sheet stuck over the lettering then traced it with a permanent marker. Then used carbon paper and re applied outline ( see Jenno thread) Had it hand painted , much better than vinyl self adhesive ....but that's just my opinion.

Gee SGTL, this thread slipped under my radar Is that the Wedderburn bloke who's letting the TD's and Properts deteriorate in the weather? If so, how didja do it??? Give him a heart attack and then resuscitate him?? My eyes glaze over a bit when I see words like Viscount etal, because there are just so many of them! But this looks like a Rare one, congrats on the find and then being able to get it. Good luck Ray

Heating of water for the bath.....My mother, father and friends years ago (1940s) designed a van. Many years later they bought my Franklin Hunter! I thought it was a joke to have a bath in the van, now realise quite possible! My Hubby Col for years had an immersion heater, we used when we only had wood hot water heater. It would heat the water easily, however, needed electricity! Cheers.

...Is that the Wedderburn bloke who's letting the TD's and Properts deteriorate in the weather? ... Hi Roehm, Are you thinking of the guy with the 'caravan museum' at Buangor between Ararat and Beaufort, by any chance? Is so, SGTL's Viscount didn't come from there. Or did the Wedderburn man have even more caravans than I saw SGTL? Don Ricardo

Wedderburn man is scrap dealer Tony. He did have lots of vans but they were in open fronted sheds. I don't remember any being outside in the weather.. Many have approached him over the years but for whatever reasons it is only now he has decided to sell them. Really nice man with a lot of knowledge. Re- picking at the van, that was the most rotten piece of timber & the only one we are going to replace. Main aim is to patch it up to waterproof & useable & of course some back breaking paint removal. Also handy to open her up so the sparky can put in a safety switch without doing too much damage. I haven't investigated too closely but suspect the clearance lights are set up on a switch of their own so will try & re-wire them while it's open too. This is probably the most you will see happen this year Busy times on the farm but it feels good to do something to the van however small.

Don Ricardo, I'm pretty sure that it's the one SGTL described. The openfronted building was pretty dilapidated and let weather in. People have tried to rescue some of those vans ever since this site began. Good to see that they are now being passed on to people such as SGTL to bring them back to their former glory!

Hi Andrew, no, not heading to Tassie again. Doubt harvest will be finished before the kids go back to school! Now, to put the original location of this van to rest, I had to borrow Don Ricardos photos as mine have vanished off the face of the earth!
