:-/Hi Folks....I've got no idea if this'll work, here's hoping.I'm fairly new at this logging on thingo,I tried to put in a password and it wouldn't let me in without this long code.Is it me? I'll keep playing anyway. I bought a 1 owner (1950's?) bondwood caravan about 7-8 yrs ago,it was in very good, but old condition then, now it needs some doing up.Do you guys put modern braking system/suspension in your vans? You do some great work on your vans, just wondering how far you go.I've got an HR panel van with drum brakes......not the most safest setup in australia....I don't know the first thing about sending fotos, sorry. I'll keep watching for tips and how to's.....thanks.....TIMMO

Hey Timmo,
The long code thingy is the password we sent you to log on first time. Then you need to go back to your profile and change your password to something you know.
Good luck and great to have you onboard. It can be a fun game ;D

Hi again Timmo Lyn and I lived in Dromana and Lyn worked in Mornington I worked through Red Hil just the best place to be located in Victoria as well as Lillydale Woori Yallock just beautiful country Perhaps Reddo and Dennis might be able to give you some advice on brakes hopefully they read this Link soon both boys are mechanically minded and theres plenty more that may be able to give some advice but where brakes are concerned I would seek out a reputable brake organisation to actually fit them

Welcome Timmo to vintage caravanning.
Because your HR had front disc brakes optional from new, it is straight forward to fit them to your panel van. They are power boosted and are have enough stopping power if you are towing a bondwood van up to about 16 ft long. You will have to also ensure you change your rear wheel cylinders, or fit a proportioning valve, to stoprear wheel lock up when the front discs and booster are installed.
The caravan most likely has over ride brakes which work quite well as long as the cable and shoes are correctly adjusted. I like over ride brakes because it means that any car can tow the van without having any special fittings on the car. I don't tow at excessive speed anyway, as part of the experience is the getting there bit.
Electric brakes are good if you are prepared for the hassle and expense of fitting them.
Some of the older vans have vacuum brakes fitted - i have only seen them and never owned one so I can't really comment on them.
What sort of brakes does your van have? If any?
In Qld, brakes are not required unless the van (trailer) weight is over 750kg. Maybe it's the same in Vic?
Have fun regards earlee

Thanks everyone, thanks for the welcome/replies... I've got power assisted drums at least on the HR,I'm a little/fairly mechanically able. With the over-ride brakes, I assume you mean ones that come on when the car itself brakes and the weight of the van pushes the "piston(?)" which activates the master cylynder? Well thats whats on my c'van. Its got hydrolic brakes, no cables... They certainly need re-doing though. The woman I got it from said they were Hillman brakes & hubs. The c'van is a fair way off yet....I'm just moving it down the back yard soon, so I can get stuck into it.I'm with you, earlee,I learnt years ago that speeding doesn't work anyway, you just get to the red light quicker.I just sit on the speed limit, and keep plenty of distance from the car ahead. Bye for now.........TIMMO
