Hi All i wasn't quite sure where to put this post. I was gunna put in tow cars but i figure its a techo type question so here it is. Ok all you Holden eggspurts. having finally paid the rego on the wagon i took the FB wagon for a run to the previous owners house to let him have a drive ( as promised) Once out on the Hwy the old girl ran up to 50 MPH quite happily. At 55 she started to protest by 60MPH she definitely wasn't happy. I am running 14" mags with 195 X 70 tyres on it. These tyres are almost the same hieght as the standard wheels. I am looking at fitting a higher ratio diff and seeing as though there is a few of you using early holdens for tow cars i thought you could steer me onto the best ratio for pickin' up a few MPH on the HWY. Would the diff out of an Auto be higher than a manual Also found she doesn't mind a drink with the twin carbs on. Morgan = 1500 miles at 12 miles to the gallon = 125 gallons = 625 litres @ $1.20 litre = $750.00 and thats only in one direction.!!! Might hook the van up to one of my Nortons. just kiddin it wasn't quite that bad but i am sure i can improve on road speed and consumption figures. So....2:77, 3.08 or 3:55 can get hold of a complete EK for $100 which was hyraumatic but converted to manual. might crawl under and check out the diff. Help. help. help.

Reddo, your FB looks as stock as rock apart from the carbies .......its probably running the original 3.9 diff ratio, hence its high revving at 60 mph.
If you're going to tow your van with it, I would get rid of the 14" mags and put the original 13' wheels back on, remove the twin carbs and put the original single stromberg carb back on, and leave the diff alone. This will eliminate your fuel consumption probs (the old grey's used to get nearly 30 mpg), and the 3.9 diff ratio is great for towing, especially a hill start ......it will be less stress on the clutch than a higher diff ratio.
Cheers

G'day Mark. Will definitely be returning to the single carb. Have a stock manifold and carb ready to bolt on this arvo. Now that i have a few miles up on the car i have had a chance to sort the carbies out a bit and it doesn't lump over anywhere near as much. so my first impressions of a non stock cam are now fading. t'was just running too rich. Will crawl under the wagon t'sarvo and see if i can spot the ratio . should be stamped near the yoke from memory Y/N. otherwise i seem to remember the ratio stamped in the crown wheel The 14" wheels and tyres are only about 20mm taller than the originals. so i don't think there is much of an issue there. If anything they will knock the revs down a bit. From the feedback so far i think i might aim for a 3.55:1. The car should drag a van that weighs 350 KG unladen and probably no more than 450Kg loaded without too much effort and still be capable of a happy 60 mph. That sort of weight isn't all that different than having 4 or 5 adults in the car. I have brought an EH ute as well. With 202/ 5spd it would have no trouble with the van. Problem is its lowered , has no towbar and even if it did i would still have to lower the van 2" or reset the gooseneck to get it to sit right behind the ute. Hmmmmmm theres an option. ?? Naaaa i am concentrating my efforts on the wagon at the moment. Gotta make sure it makes it to the all holden day with just croozn hangin on the back otherwise Maurie and Dorrie will shoot me. Thanks for the replies guys!!! Reddo

G'Day Maurie.
Single carby fitted and running sweet. no provision on inlet manifold for vacum hose to fuel pump . disconnected at the mo so no wipers. Have removed electric wiper motor and switch from EK. Gotta pull half the dash apart to get to the wiper mechanism & arms. Not keen but its gotta happen soon.
Pulled diff out of EK sedan. has engraved 3/543 then a gap and 37 stamped. Has 35 teeth on crown wheel forgot to count pinion teeth. hoping it is 10
Might be lowering "just croozn" a coupla inches this weekend to get that "Sled" look behind the wagon. A big difference to the off road look it had when lifted up behind the Toyota 4X4..
No matter what happens i am determined to get to Clarendon next weekend. Be there Saturday lunchtime. $11.00 is cool. Probably not worthy of show and shine on sunday. Might rat around the swap meet gear.
Will ring ya today.
