Thank you thank you thank you! I just rang him, and has very kindly agreed to help me. If the van's as sweet as it looks I don't know if I'll get it… but I'm one step closer to trying!

So… Alan had a look at the van this afternoon (I'm so grateful to him for going out of his way, and he was very nice), and tells me that the photographs don't misrepresent its condition. Last registered late 70s — as an aside, is that going to make it difficult to register now? One front corner was damaged, probably in the late 70s, and repaired at the time… smallish water mark inside the storage thingy under the seat on that side, but no other evidence of water damage. Has been in a shed ever since, though. After I spoke to Alan I sent another message to the seller, requesting clarification as to whether the whole van had been resealed, or just the damaged corner? And could I have more photos? Seller seems very genuine? Said it had all been resealed, but not by him — by previous owner. Will take more photos and email them to me tomorrow… Hopefully one of them will clarify the Nomad question

Hi Amy, so we find another case of "badge engineering" that a caravan dealer has done. Perl caravans must have bought Hilandales and put his yard name on them, nothing wrong with that, still a good van! Have you bought her yet? Cheers hughdeani

Hope for your sake you didn't start this bidding war so early. Potentially this auction could sky-rocket. Already more than doubled starting bid.

Someone with deeper pockets than me won the day, alas — disappointed but not shocked, it is lovely and my means are limited. Hope they love it! Thank you so much to those who helped me out

Hi Justanotheramy, That's disappointing, but the price just kept going up didn't it? Hopefully you will come across a van that suits you - and that is within your price range - soon. You've been looking for a long time. When the day comes, and it will sooner or later, I'm sure everyone on the forum will get a thrill to see you and your family off on your first caravan trip. ...so we find another case of "badge engineering" that a caravan dealer has done. Perl caravans must have bought Hilandales and put his yard name on them, nothing wrong with that, still a good van! And a question for Hughdeani... Do you happen to know the name of the people that owned the Nomad hire place in Mount Waverley? I presume it wasn't 'Perls' (or 'Pehls'), but I just thought I'd ask... Don Ricardo

Next time you find the van of your dreams JAA, I suggest you keep quiet about it till after the auction. There are too many visitors watching this site and by talking about it, as well as providing the link, you may have inadvertently tipped off the eventual buyer (maybe, but possible). You have to play these things pretty close to your chest. Also, don't you be the one to start the bidding, or go into it so early. I think you may have to rake some responsibility for the eventual high price, by doing that.

Hi Roehm,
While I think much of your advice regarding Ebuy auctions is good - particularly in regard to early bidding - I think it only fair to Justanotheramy to point out that it wasn't her who posted the link in the first place, nor was it she who provided the bulk of the commentary on the van in question. In addition, because she lives some considerable distance from the location of the van, it was necessary for her to seek someone on the forum to inspect the van on her behalf (a precaution I'm sure we would all recommend), thereby signalling at least some interest in the van.
Justanotheramy - I hope you're not feeling too down about the Perls outcome? Ebuy auctions are tricky things with their own rules, strategies and etiquette which we all learn by doing - sometimes losing the prize but hopefully sometimes winning the prize too.

Hi DonR That's what you get when you don't scroll back and rely on memory instead! JAA didn't start this thread, but she did start another thread when looking for someone to check the van out and included the ebay link.
Personally, if I wanted to ask for someone on the forum to check out a van for me, I would do so without too much fanfare. That's been my policy over any van I've bought either on ebay or gumtree in the pas 13 years and has served me well. There is time enough for bragging AFTER the deal is done!

The seller seemed genuine — I'm pleased for him that he got a good price for his van, even while I'm disappointed that I wasn't the buyer. I have no way of knowing how much other bidders want a van, or how much they have to spend, so there's no point second-guessing it. If I'd had a better poker face maybe it would've sold for a bit less? But whoever won it seemed pretty determined, so maybe not. Maybe they'll turn up here and we can ask them Honestly, I'm probably going to signal interest in any van I'm considering by asking about it here — I'm not delusional enough to suppose that I couldn't benefit from the perspectives of others with more knowledge and experience on a topic! Any gain in stealth would come at the cost of a concomitant gain in ignorance, and I don't think that's worth the trade-off. I may not have won this van, but I've learned some stuff. Thanks again to all those who provided advice and help. I really appreciate it.

Hi Amy, On Gumtree at the moment is a Viscount that's not! It's actually a Murrumba Star 1966 or so,a really nice looking van that might interest you. Add number 1088360092. As I said,it's not what they say it is but still a nice van! Cheers hughdeani

Thanks for thinking of me But we're looking for something more in the 10-12fr range… After towing my old Carapark Sixteen-Two back to Adelaide from Kangaroo Island, my partner is a bit nervous about anything larger

Not all are auctioned so check out the classified sections as well, no poker face needed there...
