Well I had to get on the show us band wagon but a lot of topics have been taken so I thaught we needed to display our great old and maybe not so old music devices and machines players and recorders. To start with I will put up my pride and joy my 1962ish Grundig TK48 reel to reel player. This player is a valve unit and is in working condition. I first took it to the Echuca weekend in 2015 where some have seen it working away all weekend. I have always loved R2R players, I currently have 3 in working condition and one that I am currently fixing up. But this one is my favorite. So Let's see what you all have to crate that atmosphere of music.

My home made (not by me) gramophone as seen at the 2014 nationals. I do have a cabinet style gramophone made by Exelaphone. If you want me to add that here just ask. Or should we keep this tread just for portables?

I left the criteria pretty vague to include all types of music devices so I don't mind seeing the non-portable type also. It's all about preserving the past in photo's.

Thanks King Fisher. The 3 additional framed pic shots are off the web & show like mine, plentiful original light fixtures, mirrored glass panels & the turntable on right of which i removed mine when cleaning the interior.Interestingly the mechanism which closes the radio side is in fact a pneumatic screen door closer! Apparently original & works absolutely beautifully by just pushing the door gently & watching it close effortlessly. There is a clear glass panel on each side top surface & 3 dimpled silver glass panels in bottom right cabinet (left/rear/right).Left bottom cabinet for records is only timber lined. One central speaker with an "ON" light above mesh as well as one inside.

Gosh I can't even get that many songs on my iPad ! And a part time radio Dj! DC3Td you are a man of many talents! I am a sucker for old valve radios and have had a few in my time but quite struck on the Bantam as I hadn't seen one before . Have an Astor Mickey ( early forties ) and a few others but with the demise of am radio I haven't bothered to get them going . That's a big collection of Hughdeanes ah! And it all starts with one.... then all of a sudden you have a hundred! ?

Actually i referred to myself then being a radio presenter rather than a dj.Worked strictly solo manning the console/twin platters/reel to reel/cassette deck & phone. My radio program id song was WOLD by the late & great Harry Chapin which i slightly rearranged & Adrian (a great studio muso in his own right)put down his vocal & instrumentation & transferred to 8 track cart (thats what we used back then for station promos/id).Harry (wold)`ve been proud i think.

Picked up this lovely Gallotone gramophone on ebuy. With a few 'farmers repairs' it works a treat albeit a bit too loud.

Well as we own two VVans now, I've an excuse to have two of everything :-) find for today at garage sale - and this is a pic of it working - picks up the local AM channel really well, just needs a little spit n polish. Bought it from an old gent who originally bought it - always kept it running he said, it was in his horse shed. Looks like he has retired in town an no longer has a horse shed, so lucky me.

Here are my DIY music machines: The instruments are called 'lap steel guitars' nowadays. In the past they were referred to as 'steel" or 'Hawaiin" guitars. The one one the right is a 'Maxim' made by Peter McCarthy in Melbourne in the late forties. The one on the left is a Moody made by R.Moody & Co in Sydney in the late '50s/ early '60s. The amplifier in the middle was originally a speaker box for a movie projector, the combination being standard state gov't issue to Victorian mental institutions in the 1940s. This one came from Kyneton. I had a Melbourne amp builder, Jereme Clingan, make a small amplifier to fit the cabinet, so that it is a complete stand alone unit. Electric guitar (American) 1964 Fender Stratocaster with two Aussie built amplifiers, both by R.Moody & Co Sydney: top - 1963 Moody GA 35 and bottom - 1964/5 Moody GA40. Two Aussie built acoustic/electric guitars made in Melbourne by Maton; left- 1979 Maton Coolibah and right - 2000 Maton Messiah.

Very nice, full history to boot. Do you jam with others or play in a band? I met RobEG at Parkes Elvis festival, he still plays the steel really well.

Heres a nifty record player, garage sale find on the weekend - rubber has had it, but hey for 0.50c I'm not complaining. Haven't plugged it in yet so not sure if she's a go-go-goer.

My dad, Douglas McLean, from Melbourne, would have loved this. He is deceased now about 14 years. His occupation was radio television tradesman. He build radios for the army during WW11. Later he went into t.v. as well. He helped many young men establish retro radio business' in the 80s and onwards in his retirement. He would have known many of these radios. I married a t.v. radio tradesman, now retired, coming from the country he also knows many of the old radios. cheers.

I found this beauty at a recent garage sale. It's a HMV Solid State Stereo System. Model is Interceptor TL-4Z. Build date is 1973. I took it over to Wagga and had it serviced by a bloke who works from home who did an excellent job. He also repairs TV's and microwaves. He learnt his trade in the navy. He said he's never seen one of this type in such good condition. He said it has been well looked after. I couldn't wait to get it back home and throw the vinyls on that I've been carrying around for years. (It's the quickest trip I've ever made from Wagga to Batlow) Everything works perfect and no distortion noise from the speakers. My son actually said it's the clearest record player he's ever heard. Next best thing I've acquired since my Viscount.

Seems I can't help myself, found another beauty today, not quite right for the caravan, but looks a treat on my sideboard, I'm told it works but haven't plugged it in as yet. stromberg carlson 56 by Helen Sheedy, on Flickr
