Hey Tonyh
Can understand your wanting to stay with the original layout It's the same as the one we have in the '68
You've probably seen that we raised the beds and lounge This means more storage and easier to sit on. The originals were just too low for us.
Will you be going with two singles or a double bed?
The only real changes that I would make now, would be the sink would be more like Lovshacks. In that it has the benchtop as one unit and the sink sits into it.
That and more draw space were the wardrobe is...... could have fitted another draw in there instead of so much wasted hanging space.
Cheers Atog

Hey ATOG, I did say the same layout BUT Yes the beds will stay twin singles at an increased height -I will be talking to the cabinet maker as he did his time with Riviera Boats and has suggested large roll out draws instead of top access - and the bed on the sink side will be 50-75mm longer so I won't hit my head ;D. The new sink/cupboards will be 95 to 100mm wider to match up with the new 105L three way fridge so I will be also putting in a sink similar to Luvshacks and will redesign the cupbourd layout as we will be fitting an induction microwave and not a normal oven as I do all the cooking on the BBQ outside which will be located on a roll out in a hatch in front of the door. The wardrobe will also get the extra draw treatment. ;D See pretty much a standard set up just small changes Cheers, O brother in fibreglass, tonyh

Greetings TonyH ooh lover of lympics and admirer of all things glass ... including its contents Thinking about the roll out draws in the single beds..... The reason we went to the top access was that all the space can be used when needed Remember there is a cupboard between the two beds... that would be lost space if a draw was fitted.. perhaps? By using the top access and a removable strengthening piece, large items could be stored as well as all of the space is used. Had also considered having an access door in the side as well as the top.... Problem was that to see anything at the back of the space through the side access door, you would be on hands and knees praying to Mecca A perfect position if the wife felt the need to inflict a little humility to my person ;D ;D Again just a thought...... As it is a little way off for you at the moment. Cheers and keep up the great work The van is coming together well Atog Ever on the lookout for fibreglass

Hey ATOG, I know what your saying, but once I can sit in the van with the basic bed frames sitting in place, the draw idea will either go out the window or as I suspect we will end up with a combination of both so there is no wasted space ;D - I put in the 3rd floor section on Tuesday night and hope to fit the final tomorrow - Yeaaaayh ;D ;D ;D I still have to fibreglass to the shell but it is incredible how much stronger the van feels already Cheers, tonyh

Good to see some more progress Tonyh The floating wardrobe is a nice touch ;D ;D ;D Specially lightened Got to agree with Reddo .... The van is so light now it needs over a 100 kg of weight just to keep it on the ground !!!!!!! Keep up the good work and post some more photos when you get back from your trip Cheers Atog

G Day, a little update Just about finished the first layer of fibreglassing the floor to the cab. While I waited for the resin to dry I started marking out, cutting, plaining. routering and sanding (used just about every tool I own to get the desired shape ;D) out a piece of 150 x 25 mm hoop pine for the new door jam as you can see the original one had a little dry rot - I made it wider to add some more strength New door jam in place but not glued or fibreglassed in yet I had the cabinet maker over and I ordered more ply to get a start on the interior fit out. We worked out the steps so I put the frames together in the correct order so he can do the laminating in his shop - then I fit the fully finished units. First I will make the new bulkhead on the kitchen side 50mm further forward - so I can stretch out in bed ;D - it will now go from under the cupboards as original but now all the way to the floor to tie the top to the bottom in one piece. Cheers, tonyh

Hey TonyCome on mate..... There has to be some time to put into this most deserving of projects. Race you to Coledale next year ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D That gives you plenty of time to finish the ol girl off Without your work she is just a lonely old shell. Hollow and devoid of character She will look great behind the FC...... Convinced yet? Waiting with a worm on my tongue (baited breathe) Atog

Hey Atog, Yep still here but on the last stages of a 1975 GMC Crew Cab restoration - just a small rebuild - inner and outer sills front floors, firewall, turret rust repairs, replaced complete front clip and doors to 1988 model, bare metal respray, total engine rebuild that I only used the original crank and rods and EVERYTHING else went in the bin, gearbox rebuild and dually diff replacement - oh and all the brakes and bearings - a simple rebuild in between building and racing with my son and 5 championships in 4 years has kept me away from my beloved Olympic because work keeps getting in the way as well - bring on a Gold Lotto win so I can retire and do the van reso I want to. And just to add to my sidetracking after the GMC is registered I will be bring home the other half of the rig - a 37 foot gooseneck race trailer to deskin, rust repair, redesign, then reskin, internal fitout and reregister. EASY And he is now building a DoorSlammer to race. ARRRHHHH Cheers, TonyH

Hey Tony Glad to see you are still lurking around VV. Guess this is a warning or perfect example of what can happen when there are a lot of things happening in your life. I realise you really want to finish the van and have the skills. But with other things crowding the work on the van out. . . . it can take many years. You most likely have seen many start vans and not finish them, as have I. So to all the would be restorers - make sure you have the time. Or it may be one of those projects on the back-burner for who knows how long. Hang in there Tony. You have to steal some time to work on your van somewhere. Cheers Atog Quick note to the Andys: The section Tonyh has used to brace the LHS of his entrance is what I was meaning in the PM I sent. It will strengthen the doorway and stiffen the van as it locks both halves together.

Hi Atog, There is no doubt that unless I get run over by a bus I will finish the Olympic - I have a list and things get done in that order so after the Crew Cab and Gooseneck are finished I have told my son then it is time to finish the van so we can use it and tour around for some fun. By the way it might not be the last Olympic resto as I bought another 1968 single rear side window that looked beyond repair for parts but when I got it out of it's "bog" and had a good look at home I think I can save it too. Cheers, TonyH

Just a bit of a nudge of this thread. For those who own an Olympic this thread will help with rebuilds.
Not heard from tonyh in many a year. But his contribution is always welcome.
