Thanks for the pics, I don't know what has happened to the photos of the display in the city last weekend? That "Sportsman" I think is Kevin's home made reproduction Teardrop. It is an excellent example but is not a Sportsman unfortunately. Looking forward to attending the show on Monday with Vagabond and (will probably opt for the Clipper but might be tempted to take the Sportsman!!!!!!!) Leigh.

Hi Leigh Thanks for that, I got home and couldn't remember all the details for listing! I've now corrected the post. If the number of people peering through it were any indication, the Sportsman would be an excellent choice. Cheers Seeshell

hi seeshell while you're doing corrections, i thought i'd let you know that firefighter's van is a roadhaven, not a roadmaster. don't tell firefighter, but roadmasters are much classier than roadhavens. geoff 'n jude

Hi all, Yes, photos are coming...but I'm having some issues with the Photobucket app on my iPad. I'll try again tomorrow after both it and I have had a good sleep and (hopefully) regained our composure! Don Ricardo So I'm guessing still no regained composure from either of you? I was speaking with my neighbor today who said he had been to the caravan & camping show and said I would have enjoyed looking at the vintage vans on display, sorry Grahame, already know most of them

...I don't know what has happened to the photos of the display in the city last weekend? Sorry folks, Apart from my Photobucket troubles, I was interstate for most of the week and didn't get a chance to get back to the forum to post the photos, but here they are... Five of us Vintage Caravanners had a great time last Saturday (1 March) publicising the 60th Melbourne Caravan Show by displaying our vans on Southbank Promenade which runs along the Yarra River right in the centre of the Melbourne CBD. Not often you get to drive on, and park on a footpath! The line of vans along the Promenade: Don257's Gipsy branded Lylack (there's a story behind that!) and FC Holden: Brenten's Sunliner and Ford hotrod: Sportsman1's Clipper and Vauxhall Vagabond: Prem's Vacationer van and HT Holden Premier: Our Don with matching tow vehicle: Also on display was a very nice 1929? Dodge converted into a delivery truck for the Herald and Weekly Times. The truck is soon to be put on display in a glass cage because current work health and safety laws prevent any of the H&WT employees driving it - no airbags, collapsible steering wheel, etc - which I think is a bit sad: The Sportsman1's taking it easy during the day: The Prem's posing for an official photographer: The Don257's with a couple of new found friends... ...then Elvis turned up: One of the banks was running free sight seeing tours along the Promenade in pedi-cabs. Dona Ricardo and I enjoying the trip: The whole Vintage Caravan crew enjoying the day: A couple of moderns got in on the publicity act as well: But the vintage vans got the most interest. I reckon we had at least 200 people through our vans during the day: At the end of the display, all the vintage vans were taken on several circuits through the city streets, led by a bunch of motot scooters towing billboards, ending up at Etihad Stadium at Docklands: Sportsman1's guide led him astray, but he arrived eventually. Perhaps he should have followed the tram instead of the motor scooter? Group photo with some of the 'motor scooterists': Tara Nestor from the Caravan Industry Association of Victoria in the orange vest on the left hand side did a great job in organising the day and looking after us. Thanks Tara - great work! Don Ricardo

G'day all, Firefighter's wish is my command, so here are some pics from yesterday (8 March) at the 2014 Melbourne Caravan, Camping and Tourism Show held at the Caulfield Race Course, starting with a panorama of the vintagecaravans.com display: We were delighted to see that Firefighter had seen the light and joined the Don brigade. ABOUT TIME! Nah, not really, he was just enjoying a bit of shade next to Austin125's Don and having a chat to Dona Ricardo while he was at it! Our Don: Ralphndi's home-built 'Looz-a-Bago'. Surprising how many people don't get the joke - 'Looz-a-Bago' vs 'Winn-e-bago'! Ralphndi took the opportunity to ply their trade as a vet, but didn't get a whole lot of customers... Finally, Firefighter's Roadhaven was also on display: We had a pretty constant stream of people through the day, and I think we probably had 200+ people walking through our vans: It was great to chat to those who visited us. Lots of people commented on the familiar scent of bondwood when they went inside the vans, and many told us about the memories the vans brought back to them. Many people talked about how roomy the vintage vans were inside, and how much character they had, compared to others they had seen. Many told us about vans they, their parents or grandparents had, and about the happy times they had spent holidaying or honeymooning in caravans. All the things that Seeshell heard on Thursday. Some people, though, also told stories of how brothers or sisters had decided to dispose of their parents' "old vans" in repairable condition by taking them to the tip, or in one case setting it on fire, without consulting with their siblings who would have loved to have restored and used them. True story about setting the van on fire to get rid of it. Some people had come to the show specifically to look at the vintage caravans, and to talk about how to find a vintage van for themselves, or to show us photos of their vans. Some of the photos we were shown were u-n-b-e-l-e-i-v-a-b-l-e and we hope that some of the people will join the forum and post their pics here. We handed out a 100+ vintagecaravan.com leaflets. A thrill for Ralph, Firefighter and I was to catch up with Jeff Chrisfield, who with his father and brother owned and built Phoenix caravans. He told us a lot about their company and also was able to tell us a lot about some of the other manufacturers building caravans in the 50's and 60's. Firefighter and I are hoping to catch up with him after the Nats to record some of the things he had to tell us. I also had a special thrill when I met somebody I have been trying to track down for 21 years (quite literally) in relation to Don caravans. I'm not saying any more now, but will reveal all at some stage... It got a bit quieter towards the end of the day, and by that stage the opportunity to sit down for a while was very welcome as the Firefighters could attest after three days at the Show (and one more to go)! The CIAV had erected an electronic billboard which directed people to the vintage caravan display which was great (see the back wall): However, we also admired the caravan cubbies, which were really cute (apparently 'cute' is a four letter word on the forum, but I can't think of a better description ). The cubbies were all set up with toy furniture, etc. Kim and Amy, who build the cubbies, built the first one before Christmas - I think for their own children - and after showing it to friends and rellies were inundated with orders, so took a punt on coming to the show. Apparently they got quite a few orders from caravan parks that want one of the cubbies for the playground in their parks. It is great to see somebody with a clever idea being rewarded for their creativity. And maybe when people come on to the forum looking for a vintage van to use as a cubby, we can refer them to Kim and Amy, and save a vintage van for another higher purpose. All in all, a fun day was had by all! Don Ricardo

Hi Firefighter,
Interesting to hear about the chap you met at the caravan show who sold the van to Mark T.
Don serial number 2303 is actually the Don Cadet that originally belonged to Bill and Kit Roscoe, not a leadlight windowed Don. It is a beautifully preserved van, although sadly (from my point of view) I think Mark T has parted company with it now.
I think the vintagecaravans.com logo was based on Mark T's Home Beautiful masonite van, rather than a Don. The HB van was one of his first, but I think it has also been moved on.
Maybe we should confirm the origins of the logo with Mark, and then start a thread on the logo and the van that inspired it in the Hall of Fame section? Being the basis of the website and forum logo would surely qualify the van for being a part of the Hall of Fame? What do you reckon?

Afternoon all,
Thought those of you that attended the 2014 Melbourne Caravan, Camping and Touring Super Show at the Caulfield racecourse might like to know that the CIAV has posted a YouTube video which features a few shots of our vintage caravans - look for the section at about 3 minutes 33 seconds...try 3 minutes 14 seconds... (Thanks to Redmr2red for the correction!)

Hi Redmr2red, Thanks for that correction. I'm not sure where I got 3 mins 33 secs from. (Those emoticons are supposed to show a confused look - not sure if they do?) I've amended my post. Don Ricardo
