olfarts says: " Judging eh Counts me out if,i did mine up to be enjoyed by myself and talked about (in a constructive manner) by my peers and those who appreciate a section of Australian history. Not to be judged. "
my thought exactly olfarts .....its a well known fact that vintagecaravans.com doesn't support judging & trophies. Lets be clear that this event is organised by the Caravan & Camping Association of SA, ......and they are organising judging .......... their choice ! Mark

hi All,
One thing I've enjoyed with our Forum related Vintage Van events since I joined a few ( seven) years back, is the complete absence of any judging on a competitive nature regarding our vans and/or towcars.
We all put our effort into our vans & cars because we love & enjoy them (hopefully most of the time).
I personally would hate to see anything done to add a competitive nature to the presentation of our vans, other than the personal pride we put into them.
I find at most hot rod events I've been to over the years that the guy with the most money or the best skills can often dominate the sport, but not always. But judging anything is a subjective matter, & rarely makes the majority satisfied with the result.
I probably would still enter this event if it was near where I live, or where I happened to be at the time, but since I dont often ( read never) get to Adelaide I guess I will never know.
Its still nice to see our passion for old vans being recognised by those outside our group.

Couldn't agree more about no interest in the judging side of things but the SA assoc have done a big job this last 12 months culminating with their book release next month on vintage vanning in SA. I reckoned it may be fun to be part of it. jenno

Hi everyone, It’s great to see that enthusiasm for the history of the Australian caravan industry and restoration of vintage caravans continues to grow. While vintage caravan enthusiasts restore their caravans for sheer enjoyment and camaraderie, they also play an important role in the preservation of the past in our industry. Many of you may be aware that the Caravan and Camping Industries Association of SA (CCIASA) commissioned Trevor Gill to research key aspects of this history and South Australia’s contribution to the early development of the caravan industry nationally. We are in the final stage of this journey with a book now being printed. Copies of the book, entitled Still Swinging The Billy: Exploring Our Caravanning and Camping Past, will be available for purchase in early March. The research conducted over the past couple of years has highlighted many wonderful stories and demonstrated the importance of celebrating the achievements of the pioneers in the caravan and camping industry. As a result, the CCIASA decided to organise the National Vintage Caravan Grand Parade to coincide with our February show in Adelaide in 2013. The vintage caravans website has kindly allowed us to post the first flyer promoting the event next year. A dedicated website is being developed to provide specific details on the National Vintage Caravan Grand Parade. This website will be officially launched at the 2012 South Australian Caravan and Camping Show in February. The intention is to provide ample time for vintage caravan owners and enthusiasts to plan their trip to Adelaide and be part of the Grand Parade next year. The website will provide answers to all your questions, and provide the opportunity to register your attendance. One thing I would like to make clear is that there will NOT be ‘judging’ of the vintage caravans. However, a number of the vintage caravans will be selected to showcase different eras in the progression of the industry from its humble, but important beginning. The website will explain all of this detail, so please make sure you mark Friday 22 February 2013 in your diary and make this a truly memorable event.
Kind regards, Stuart Livingstone CEO CCIASA

Thanks Stuart for clarifying a couple of points, particularly in regard to "no judging" . You say "A number of vintage caravans are to be selected to showcase different era's of caravanning" ..................sounds fair to me Am looking forward to getting more details on the parade from the website National Vintage Caravan Grand Parade when launched next month. Also, can't wait for copy of Trever Gill's book " Still Swinging The Billy" ........should be a great read ! The Adelaide will be an even not to be missed .........me thinks store the FX and Janaway somewhere in Sydney after the Cowra Nats, ........grab a Virgin back to Perth, fly back to Sydney xmas this year, .......drive half day to Bathurst for the FX/FJ Nats on December 28 ...........after the Nats, drive the FX and lil caravan to Adelaide ......park it up somewhere ....fly home .........fly to Adelaide Feb 20 or thereabouts, do the Adelaide parade ......drive home to Beverley ........you confused .......so am I Mark

The parade should be an excellent exposure of "Vintage Caravans" . Especially considering the input of caravan manufacture in SA in the early years. I for one will nominate to take our Roadmaster in the 2013 event. I know Stuart has indicated that he wants to have 100 caravans and compatible cars to participate in this parade.Should be awesome. Looking forward to it.

I reckon it would be great fun also (other than blood pressure going up driving in Adel). May look at staying in a van park somewhere in Adelaide. Stave

I believe part of Stuarts idea was for a convoy of vv's leaving Adelaide Shores Caravan park at West Beach and travel down Richmond Road and into the Adelaide Show grounds. So anyone that was interested from interstate would be a good suggestion to stay at same park. For more info probably suggest waiting for Stuart to start his dedicated website to get all the details "First Hand".

Hi Everyone, It has been long time coming however the CCIASA commissioned book Still Swinging the Billy : Exploring our Caravanning and Camping Past is available for pre-ordering. Still Swinging The Billy: Exploring Our Caravanning and Camping Past is a new book providing wonderful insights into the pioneering days of the industry and our enduring passion for holidays on wheels.
Commissioned by the Caravan and Camping Industries Association of SA, the book features fascinating stories and historic photographs of the early designers and manufacturers who paved for the way for the six million Australians who today enjoy the caravanning and camping lifestyle.
Author Trevor Gill explores the origins of caravanning from the ancient cameleers of Persia, the merchant travellers of the Silk Road spanning 12,000km from China to the west, the colourful gypsies of England and Europe, the brave settlers who crossed new frontiers in the wild west of America and our own explorers, bushmen and drovers.
The book throws new light on an era when caravan travel and camping became more of a choice than a necessity as people in this country discovered the joys of touring after the ordeals of the First World War and the Great Depression.
Some of the earliest caravans were built in South Australia in the 1920s, designs that were humble by today’s luxurious standards, but which provided basic comforts against the elements as people explored more distant horizons.
Barossa Valley coach builder and blacksmith, Mr G. C. “Pop” Kaesler, is credited with building Australia’s first motor home with a quaint roofed cottage and framed windows upon a 1924 Dodge tourer.
Famous landscape artist, Sir Hans Heysen, made his earliest journeys into the Flinders Ranges in the 1930s in a little caravan with canvas roof and sides from which he found inspiration in the dramatic backdrop of places like the Aroona Valley.
Around the same time, John Alfred Jennison was building caravans at a Salisbury workshop and he went on to create the legendary Jennison Pathfinder, considered by many to be the early “aristocrat” of caravans.
The great boom in caravanning and camping occurred in the 1950s when Holden delivered affordable family cars that allowed people enjoy to their freedom like never before.
In this period, South Australia contributed disproportionately to the development of the industry in Australia given its smaller population and remoteness from the major markets of the eastern States. Outstanding design and quality of manufacturing were defining features of South Australian caravans that travelled the nation’s roads. Sought after models included Furness, Roadmaster, Paramount, Broadway, Globetrotter, Hardy, Rowvan, King, Harris, Viscount, Carapark, Clipper, and Adventurer as the industry turned from timber to aluminium and a new era.
The origins of these vans and their manufacturers are explored in Still Swinging The Billy, as are the earliest caravan parks and camping grounds.
The book also examines our affinity with the itinerant lifestyle and the call of the road that once beckoned swagmen who roamed in search of work and tossed coins in the forks of crossroads. It explores our defining free spirit, our love of the campfire and of sleeping under a blanket of stars.
It looks at the groundswell of interest in vintage caravans and the transition of the industry to modern caravans, camper trailers and motor homes that deliver the same sense of freedom, but with newfound comforts and wonders of technology.
Trevor Gill has worked in association with the CCIASA to produce a book that has its roots in South Australia and the pioneers who contributed to the industry across the nation. In doing so, it is a key reference document on a national scale for information about our caravanning and camping past.
It is also an enjoyable and inspiring read about great characters, adventurers and achievers. Whether old or new, the book underlines why we continue to love life on wheels.
CCIASA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Livingstone, said the book would serve as a monument to the industry, particularly in South Australia, and celebrate the achievements of the Association, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. There are very limited copies of the book available and I would suggest you take advantage of this opportunity to pre-order your copy by going to www.sacaravanandcampingshow.com.au and follow the link as if you were going to pre purchase ticket to the SA Caravan, Camping & Outdoor Adventure Show as this is where the option to order the book is currently only listed. DISREGARD THE OPTION TO ORDER TICKETS AND SIMPLE ONLY ORDER THE BOOK.We expect stocks of the book to arrive Mid March and customers purchasing the book will be informed when they go out in the post. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the book as much as Trevor Gill and I have enjoyed putting in together and meeting so many helpful contributors along the way. Best regards, Stuart Livingstone CCIASA CEO

Hi Dave,
Jennison has given you the info you need.
The CCIASA website had a page to buy tickets to the show online, and you could pre-order the book on the same page. However, the online purchase page is no longer there - I guess because the show took place in February. That's why you can't find it.

As many woud be aware the CCIASA just wrapped up their biggest caravan and camping show to date. The Office is still packing everything away however we have started to create a dedicated link to where Still Swining the Billy can be ordered and paid for online.
I shot some video of the pages of the book being flicked through and this should uploaded when I get back to work on Tuesday. this video file will give you a good idea of how the book is presented etc.
For those who got in early and ordered their book through the Caravan and Camping Show ticket portal Karen got these in the post the other day. As we only air freighted 100 copies over for the launch of the book all new orders will be posted once we received stocl which will be in approx 2 weeks.
Thanks for everyone's patience. I will keep you all posted on any further progress.
PS I may see some of you in Cowra as I'm planning to come over for a look and talk to a few people about our National Vintage Caravan Grand Parade in 2013. The website for our Grand Parade is almost ready for launch.... stay tuned!!
Best regards Stuart Livingstone CEO CCIASA

Congratulations to Trevor and the Caravan & Camping Industries Assoc of SA. Can only agree with Jenno regarding the presentation of this book....quality Received my pre-ordered copy a few days ago and have had a chance to read a few chapters and now understand why Jenno was maybe a little reticent to go over-the-top with his praise of the contents...... one of the early chapters is devoted to the Jennison caravan and family It is obviously a very well researched book, lots of interesting revelations about the people involved in the industry and really worth having for those interested in the history of how and why caravanning grew in the early days. I see it is still a little bit hard to buy it on-line...... you just get directed to the site where you could pre-order it before the show There is a video on YouTube showing the actual BOOK LAUNCH Cobber.

Hi Stuart, I received my pre-ordered copy of 'Still Swinging the Billy' in the mail on Wednesday. What a treat it is! Congratulations to Trevor Gill for his research and presentation, and to the CCIASA for its foresight in being prepared to sponsor such a wonderful and lavishly produced book. The photographs are wonderful. Hopefully the first of several on the history of Australian caravans. And I also have to thank you for the fact that the book does answer some of the questions about South Australian caravans which have been bugging me for ages! Congratulations again on a great book!
