Hi Gazzasmk1 That's good news. Welcome...If you intend staying at The Snowy Mountains Tourist Park on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th April 2014 you will need to phone them...02 64521828 and book a site with the vintage caravan group ( http://www.vintagecaravans.com) ..and pay 1 nights deposit. Unfortunately we can not just tentatively reserve sites. and turn up on that date and pay.....they want money up front to confirm we are fair dinkum about turning up. There no doubt will be other parks along the tour that will demand money from us as we get closer to the event .... but if you are only staying for the weekend at Cooma then all is good for you. Cheers mate Reddo

Hi Please note.... Could all those who intend coming on the "Autumn Tour of the Alps 2014" .... ( names withheld due to privacy and security reasons) .. Please .... if you haven't already done so...contact The Snowy Mountains Tourist Park at Cooma and book yourselves in for Friday 25th April and Saturday 26th April , 2014. Contact number...02 64521828 Also I have now secured 12 sites at Porepunkah Bridge Caravan Park www.porepunkahbridge.com.au/for MONDAY 28th April , 2014 ... pets allowed.. Same applies here ,,,,, you need to contact the park on ... 03 57562380 and book your site for the tour. When I spoke with the manager the other day there was some confusion whether this date was Vic school holidays ... I was of the opinion that the ruggies went back to school on the 15th April www.publicholidaysaustralia.com.au/school_holidays_term_dates/victoria.html. Which would mean we where there in the medium rate period... which would mean a cheaper rate as well as the group discount .... So don't forget to remind them of that when making your booking .. it will probably still be in some special season like "Fallfest " so I am expecting the rate to be around $45 per night. As usual ... please pm me when you have booked so I can keep a handle on who's coming along. Enjoy your day Reddo

G'day Reddo Part of your posting there was some confusion whether this date was Vic school holidays ... I was of the opinion that the ruggies went back to school on the 15th April School Holidays April in Victoria 2014 Start Saturday 4th April returns to school Tuesday 22nd April this includes Easter in this time.....only back 2 days then its Anzac day on the Friday Easter is Friday 18th to Monday 21st April www.kidspot.com.au/schoolcalendar/VIC/2014/This is what I had to work around with the Nationals and the Mexican tour to the nats........school holidays all states....... Hi Jeff Thanks for the info..... It appears that I should be able to broker a cheaper rate than they first quoted me.... Where it all gets messy is that parts of the Vic alps area also celebrate "Fall fest " which I haven't quite worked out when it starts and finishes...'seems like its up to the discretion of the parks as to when they drop back to normal rates.... That will probably be about midnight the night before the next school holidays start... Cheers Reddo

Hi All Just giving this event a "Bump".... I have reserved 12 powered sites at each of the parks mentioned earlier in my postings. There is 4 left if anyone is interested in tagging along then please .. 1. Contact the 2 parks that require payment ( see earlier posts)and book a site with the rest of us. 2. pm me when you have done so. The parks have stated they will hold reservations for our group until new years day. Obviuosly you can leave it until the new year to decide to come along...... but there will be no guarantee you will get a powered site at any of the parks. So... ya mother doesn't live here ... ya gunna have to do it all by yourself.. go for it !! Too easy Reddo

Hi Vintage Vanners. Just ( another ) reminder to those that cannot afford, don't want to travel too far or ... have simply dropped off the Vintage Van Nationals reservations list for what ever reason There is still a few vacancies available for The 2014 www.vintagecaravans.com Autumn Tour of the Snowy Mountains starting Anzac Day at Cooma NSW. Also like to mention that I wont be organizing the traditional www.vintagecaravans.com 2014 East Coast Spring Tour next year.. That's not to say someone else here on the forum might step up and organize one.. ..Just saying that besides the individual states organizing their trips to/from the Nationals at Broken Hill .The Autumn in Alps is only tour that I am aware of happening down around NSW /Vic in 2014 . So....Read back over al previous posts on this thread and... give it some consideration. As always.. its not so much the vans that make these shows a success... its the crazys that inhabit them and enjoy dragging them around the countyside , enjoying the commaraderie, sucking in what this great country has to offer in the way of scenery... hospitality ....etc... ( not to mention the junk shops etc ) 'Spose the best way to sum these tours up is.... "Expect the unexpected " Its will be a Hoot. Cheers Reddo

Ok Then The Last time I done some fiddling with the maps I was talking about heading down to the coast after staying Tuesday day 5 - 29th April. Have since rang Colac Colac Park and reserved a second night there Wednesday 30th Day 6 of the tour.... without touring... Gives us a chance to check out the local area. Move out Thursday 1/5 Day 7 and ... instead of heading down to the coast and along that well beaten track up the coast we can head west and follow the Murray river ... through...Towong.. tintaldra... Jingellic.. Tallangatta and down to Yakandandah or Beechworth for lunch, then across through Chiltern and an overnight stay at Corowa Van Park around 220k for the days drive. Friday 2/5 ( Day 8) Corowa .... up through Walla Walla.. Culcairn...the rock... Wagga Wagga and on up to Junee Tourist Park for the night...250 k drive proably around 4 hours on the road towing the vans. Saturday 3/5 ( Day 9 ) Junee to Cowra via Cootamundra and Young . stay the night at Cowra Van Park... where the Vint Van Nats where held last year....A nice park with cheap meals at the pub over the road... or so they tell me... I never made it over there for a meal.... just 8 cartons for the 3 days I was at the nationals... Sunday 4th will be head home day for me... about 6 hours ... but could go via Bathurst,, Sofala...Rylestone...Bylong Valley.. Sandy Hollow, Denman , Singleton and home....much more scenic than the western hwy through Lithgow Katoomba etc. Anywho.. any comments on the stops or parks I have mentioned would be much appreciated.. I know the Olympic Hwy can be dodgey in places but sure beats heading up the hohum hwy from Albury to Newcastle. Would be good to have all the parks nailed down/booked by the new year as it will become increasingly difficult to get group bookings as we roll on into 2014. Cheers fa now Reddo Friday

Hi and hello
Well here we are 3 months today to the start of the "Autumn in the Alps Tour" . All van parks have been contacted and 10 sites reserved for us. There is still a few people who have contacted me and expressed interest in coming along... but aren't certain about stuff like work commitments / finances as yet.. No problems... the van parks are reasonably quiet after Easter and all have indicated that they can accommodate any late comers... Might mean being on an unpowered site .... but if that's an issue for any late comer I am happy to hang on an unpowered site for a night or 2... or on a powered site somewhere around the park... hmmm.. some people would be happy if I hung at the other end of the park by myself the entire tour !!!
Been a bit slack .. was going to chase up the local tourist info centres in each area and get some "Tour bag info" for those coming along.. haven't done so yet but will get in gear shortly and chase it up.
Looking forward to getting out on the trails again and catching up with you lot again soon.. next 3 months will fly by..
Cheers Reddo

That's the place..... under new management now. Not sure weather the 4 "singing ants:" are still there to greet you when you pull up outside the caretakers office... they where cool .... and knew more about running a van park than their human counterparts. Bloke was keen / excited when I mentioned 4 sites. I raised the issue of paying for our sites now.... nup... he is happy with pay on the day... so... so far so good. we will test the 9.00pm curfew in a few months time. Reddo

Life.. and how it should be approached... 320 of us herded into the lunchroom today at Downer EDI Cardiff. a workshop that has built and maintained locomotives and passenger cars for approx. 97 years here in Newcastle Started there 29/7/2009 ... with every intention of retiring from there. 100 casuals to go on 3/3/2014.... followed by 80 to 90 perms on 16th April... I am almost certain seeing as I turn 60 on the 17th March that I will be amongst the slaughter of permanents.... A long winded waffle about "options"... voluntary redundancies.. work in WA.. North QLD ... etc ..etc.. lotsa options Arrived home in a less than jovial mood .. sort consolment and understanding in the beer fridge.....and then relayed the message to the cook..... Missus asked "what will ya do"... I replied..."go on a bloody good trip with a bunch of good mates in old caravans"... "Oh bye the way dear.. you are invited along"... Cant wait... are we there yet??? Reddowneredisux

Hi Reddo
Sorry to hear of the impending demise of your source of income, maybe your 'experience' will count for something and you might miss the chop.
Then again if you have the means to retire then its not a bad life, and they reckon you live longer, but you won't have time to complete your projects so get stuck in while you are still working!!
Good luck

Its not too late to sign up for the tour.!!!! Not long now. Reddo

Hi Well... Just under a month from kick off on the "Tour De Alps" If you have been ummmmming and aaaaring about coming along , there is still time to jump on board. A few of the "Local vintage Vanners" ...from Canberra, Yass, Tumut etc have booked in to Cooma for a 2 night stay , then heading home on sunday due to work commitments... a sort of "mini tour" ... who knows.... once they get a taste of "The Good Life" they might ring in sick at work We have 5 vans at Goulborn on the 24th April 11 at Cooma for 2 nights ... 25th and 26th and then... 7 vintage vans on the trail for the next 7 days. Crisp nights Roaring campfires Chefs Sutcacs and Strugglebrook cooking up a camp oven storm. Whipcracking exhibition...... I think this will involve me being chased around with a stick and told to clean up the pots and pans after the evening meal.... Butt sniffing./ leg cocking.. a new novelty event introduced.... just for the K9s....(Try putting your right ankle behind your right ear !!!) . Cool weather... a mate has just returned from a week or so down the south coast. He said it got down to single figures of a night!!!.. So.. it will be in the low single figures .. or lower??.. up in the mountains... I am really looking forward to this trip....after working on 2 Holdens for the past few weeks trying to sort things out and decide which car to assign the tow duties to. Endless fiddly jobs and ... not being able to pick which car will survive the rigours of the mountains and long distance lugging, Its all wearing me down. In the end I will probably just toss a coin... jump in the car and go. Ford Ranger sold last week.. so no late model option on this tour like I had on Sutcacs "Toads and Roaches Tour" at the same time last year. Cant wait to sit and the end of the vintage van congo line and watch it wind its way around some of Australias prettiest countyside.. Good times, Great mates and that laid back feeling you can only get when touring through small county towns, and staying in some of the older style county caravan parks. Each town having its on historic "Bragging rights" . each bend in the road offering something different.... makes you realize just how lucky we are to be able to enjoy our hobby and lifestyle !! See you all sonn. Reddo

^^^^^^^ I'm with you Col....never seen Reddo in my rear view mirrors yet!!!!!!!!!! really hanging out for this tour............love the high country/ northern Victoria areas in Autumn ....so different to what we're used to here up here in the 'deep north' ......not to mention great company and the 'joys' of vintage vanning! .....as you say....could be a tad COOL!!!!!!! ............but the Autumn scenes alone are worth the effort!!!

Yo..... Kaybees..."but Reddo at the end of the line?....never seen that " Sutcac....."I'm with you Col....never seen Reddo in my rear view mirrors yet!!!!!!!!!! " That's the way its gunna be. I still get flashbacks of leaving Golbourn on a tour with about 12 vans behind me.. Took a wrong turn over the bridge at the Goulborn race course .. started heading for Canberra ...and quickly realized my mistake.. hard right hand down and set sail on the correct compass heading.. Looked back in the mirrors and seen pots and pans flying out the door of someones van as they tried pulling the same manouver!!! It wont /cant happen again while I am "Tail end Charlie" Regards "The goose in the Caboose" Read more: vintagecaravans.proboards.com/post/new/12124#ixzz2x9V51glxRead more: vintagecaravans.proboards.com/post/new/12124#ixzz2x9UsGPqn

As part of the Alps Tour preparations I was driving along in the Golden Fleece EH panelvan... when I hear..... Whiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. "Whats that noise"?? "Sounds like gearbox issues??" So... home I go... stick the van up on stumps and pull the old EH 3 speed crash box out. Hmmm... I have a few spare boxes down the back shed... I.. will bung one of them in and see how she goes.... cool..... 3 days .. and... 4 gearbox swaps later .. I have ... by process of elimination .... and a lot of swearing , finally found a good HR Holden box that appears to be OK... Only 2 or 3 weeks to Tour kick off.... Cant wait cant wait cant wait.... I now have wingnuts on all gearbox components and can boast 20 minute gearbox changes ..... One wanders why I persisted when I have a complete spare EH panno parked in the drive Reddo
