Thank you Ray. It most certainly does help! Gertie's plate starts with TOT.....so unless the plate was transferred from another trailer then it would seem that Gertie is pre-1960. I might still try the museum as they will hopefully be able to confirm that it was Gertie that the plate was issued to and when. I hope when the "other half" scrambles under Gertie this weekend that he can find some other evidence regarding her origin.

That is interesting re the window. Well, I hope to unearth more about Gertie this weekend and will let you know what I find. Time to check out those wheels (as suggested by Yury) for any dating/model numbers. One has an Mercedes hubcap so that will be another chase to try and find a matching one.
Gosh....I must get some more pics posted up here so you can all have a look. Mind you she is a bit nude at the moment!

Well, I cannot believe I didn't see this earlier! There is a contruction plate on her towing gear, which due to age I was having difficulty reading it. Amazing what a little spit on your finger can do! The year 1960 showed up.......so it looks like we have discovered her age. I will post a photo of the plate on here soon. I will still approach the motor museum in the hope that they can tell me when she was first registered in Australia. Apart from that, the weekend allowed for a new section of floor to go in and removal of 1/2 her lino (sadly in a very poor condtion) and removal of another bench. So it is full steam ahead! Oh.....has anyone heard about the difficulty registering a caravan which has the door on the "wrong" side? I heard a rumour that it is illegal?

You'd be best to get that info straight from the Transport authority. The Airstreams seem to get registered with the door on the wrong side, as do some fifth wheelers, so it should be possible.

"Shesgotthelook" has made me a happy gal. Sold to me....a cute little wohwagen toy. Not entirely the same as Gertie, but I couldn't say no!! Good point Ray re the Airstreams etc....so there is hope that Gertie might get on the road. I will follow up with SA Transport in due course. In the meantime, I soldier on with her restoration
