Original internal features consist of a "Flavel" gas porcelain two burner cook top & Electrolux fridge...........Note the workmanship that has gone into the van ........Grandpa must have been one helluva tradesman ! The Cutting family from Victoria sent me some pics of their recent purchase & restoration project, an early sixties "Classic" caravan. The victorian rego No is very close to the rego No of my "Joker 11" !!!

How often do you see a 59 Caddy towing a period caravan? Here's a pic of Dave & Donna Petrusma's 1959 Roma van colour coded to match their Caddy .............

As the owner of the "Classic" van, it will take a lot more elbow grease but is is looking good at the moment. I am using a product called Alushine which works pretty well with one of those $30 polishers you can pick up from the Auto shops. Once I have finished it it will be towed behind my "62 Vauxhall Cresta. I will get some updated pics on here soon.
Regards John

One for the FJ Boys Annette Clarke from Sydney sent me some pictures of a holiday she had with her parents in 1954. They had a brand new FJ Holden (it certainly looks like a brand spanka in the pics!), hired a caravan & went on a 5 week adventure. The hired caravan is a 10 foot homemade van. They travelled to Adelaide to visit friends, then to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road. Annette says the Great Ocean Road was a very narrow unsealed road & very scary towing a van. They found out later that the Great Ocean Road was not recommended for caravanners. I don’t know how many West Aussie’s reading this know the Great Ocean Road, I travelled it a few years ago …… it is challenging enough these days in a modern car on sealed roads. Annette & her husband Peter now have a 1953 model 48-215 Holden (I prefer to just call em FX’s, but we do have to be politically correct!), and have recently purchased a 1962 10 foot van made of ply & in immaculate condition.. They are in the process of preparing the rig for vintage caravanning ……. and collecting matching period collectables.

I towed a van along the great ocean road in 2001 forget the road the most dangerous part was the truckdrivers that sit up your uno what I pulled over every so often to let them pass they drive about 200 centimetres of your tail I called into a mates place in warnambool and he had just purchased a classic van for 50 dollars in fact warnambool is a perfect place if any one in victoria is searching for a classic van advertise in the Warnambool local paper I think it is called the warnabool standard or vanguard fantastic photos I just luv those vintage 40s and fiftys style car and vans it reminds me of my old uncle Stan who we used to go away with in the fiftys he had a morris oxford and an old bondwood 15 footer or should I say new then and the destination was my mums birthplace Bachus Marsh we used to sleep in the annexe on old army camp stretchers good memories of a great Era Will bayley

We went for a drive down the Great Ocean Road in the stock standard FJ and it was scary enough with out a caravan in tow! would have been a real treat on dirt with van! and as for the trucks and busses, gotta say they need to learn some patience! Matt

This is a pic that was sent to me by Wendy, the van is a late 50's Globetrotter............. about 12' by 6'. Wendy is undecided as to whether to restore the van or use it as a spare room.................

Wendy should do both - restore the van AND use it as a spare room.
That's what happened to ours. We did it up (see "Belinda and Robert's pride and joy") and the ten-year-old prompty moved out of the house and into the yard. I thought he was going up there for a sleepover ("he'll probably get the heebie jeebies and be back in the house by 9.00"), but that was back in May and he's still up there. His little friends in year four are really jealous.

Some photos from Ken Bayley in NSW: "Saw your site in the On The Road magazine and thought you might like to get some old photos from my family collection. My late brother, Lionel Bayley had several holidays using rented vans. Kind regards, Ken Bayley Oatley. NSW. "

G'day, My parents have owned this van for the past 10 years. It was purchased from the widow of the builder. Only the end windows and the 4 of the small windows at the top open. Side windows are fixed. Cheers, John
