Hi Cobber, I notice your query regarding whether the annexe for Adamcharch's Don is the original one. It may in fact be the one and only annexe the van has ever had, but based on the colour and pattern of the canvas I would think that it is probably quite a bit newer than the van itself - maybe made in the 60's or 70's? Adamcharch's van is a probably around a year to 18 months younger than our van (ie 1950 or 1951), and I think if it had had an annexe made for it when it was new it would have looked like the original annexe for our van which can be seen in the following photo:  The side walls were made of a lightish weight, off-white canvas, and the roof a heavier weight, creamy-grey coloured canvas. The corners were laced together, and there was no way of attaching the walls to the wall of the van, and no floor - so it was nice and breezy! We continued to use the annexe when Dona Ricardo and I became custodians of the van in the early 80's:  However, the annexe was only around 10 ft long by 6 ft wide, so once we had kids and needed to accommodate cots, prams and other assorted paraphernalia, it was a bit cramped - as well as being nice and breezy... So in 1983 we lashed out and got a new 12 ft by 10 ft annexe made, which we are still using when the occasion requires:  The colour of the roof has faded a bit after 30+ years...  ...but it's stood us in good stead and was big enough when the kids grew to be teenagers and we needed to accommodate all the things teenagers need for a satisfactory holiday, such as bikes, surfboards, skateboards, 35 changes of clothes, and friends! If we were getting a new annexe made now we would still go for the same size but would probably change the design a bit to include zip off walls (not very common when ours was made) and more and larger windows, but it's lasted well and done us well. While we're on the subject of annexes in the 30's, 40's and 50's (which is where this post started), I thought I might re-post some photos from the Jennison collection which show the annexes John Jennison had on his vans in 1939/1940. The first photo taken in 1940 shows the Jennisons' Nomad caravan set up in Kurag-Gai Chase National Park in early 1940:  The interesting thing about this photo is that canvas roof of the annexe covers the entire roof of the van, which presumably meant that the roof hatch couldn't be used for ventilation. The second photo taken in late 1939, shows the Nomad at Newport Beach with a similar annexe, again covering the entire roof of the van. However, it appears from this photo that the roof of the annexe is not just a makeshift length of canvas thrown over the van but a purpose made item, because the section over the van has been shaped to fit and the edge of the annexe roof over the open space is nicely scalloped:  I think the purpose of this thread is to give people ideas about contemporary annexes for their vans, but it is still interesting to look back at how things used to be. Was lucky enough to purchase this for the Phoenix. I don't know whether I need shorter poles or some canvas adjustment to get it to sit flush against the van.   |

Original annexe for 1947 bondwood. Held on with turn buckles . I managed to put it on by myself unlike the Phoenix above!  |

SGTL I think if you park your van on a slight incline the blue annex will be perfect!!
I reckon the van it was off was higher??
With a bit of adjustment you'll sort it

My 49 Jennison with original annex ( made in the late 50s) Marconi track  Annex was made extra wide ( 8 foot) to accomodate the Buick !  Unique feature is the internal pole near the door which is a great idea add heaps of headroom and stops the door hitting the roof .   |

Hi,
Would you think it very bad practice to attach a modern day awning as all the 4wd'ers have these days to the caravan? I have done it and it is quite practicle to use.
