You can actually get filters for this very purpose, what it is supose to do is catch any larger pieces and stop them causing trouble in the water jacket but I can't see how a knited sock would catch much and as for the other sock it's probably sitting in the "ODD" sock draw ;D
If you get an email telling you that you can catch Swine Flu from tins of ham then delete it, it's Spam.

Hi HumpyBoy, there was a few rust flakes in "the sock" so that part works. Problem is how much damage has the water done to the block . Yes the previous owner used tap water, maybe the Brisbane water is okay Do you or anyone know if there is a product to neutralise rust in an engine? I have Fertan in the shed which works really good on rust but uncertain what it would do to an engine
