Hi all.......I posted pics of this van 2 or 3 years ago on this forum and nobody was at all interested I've known the owner for 40 odd years and they used to use it as a timing office for cross country events Good to see that it has finally been rescued but I have no idea how you will repair the fibreglass on the roof as it was completely trashed and caved in way back then from water damage Good luck then, you'll need it cheers Adam

The answer to the other question, where did STU go. Found a good home with my inlaws and proudly sitting behind a Zephyr. Cant wait until christmas to check it out. Tape measure and camera in hand.

Campdog, why have they not yet joined the forum? would love to see some pics, kazandadam, must have posted your pics before I joined, just done a search and nothing came up so must have been de-leted for some reason, I would very much like any info you could gather for me along with old photos if they exist, I fell in love with this van as soon as Jennison put his pics up and yes it does need a bit of work but I believe it is doable.

Just like a bought one Derk! ...looks spot on.
Hey Adam my first post on this must have slipped by you at the time somehow. I mentioned it was located near your place and was a little surprised at the time when you did not comment. I too could find no other reference to this particular van when I first posted it , just the little bit about the restored ones that people had spied around the traps. regards

So we'll get to see it at the FX FJ Nationals ?? ;D ;D ;D ;D If I was going and it was finished maybe SGTL no idea on colour just yet, colour will be one of the last things I'll be worrying about for now, I have done some work on the old girl however, new jockey wheel and I've put the door back on to keep some of the wheather out, have also had a better look at it and was surprised to find that the whole interior is also lined with Fibreglass, are the Sunnies and Olympics done like this???as for the roof, it appears to me at this stage that the timber used as spars that were glassed into the roof have all but rotted away so that looks like my starting point and the hatch to me is surprisingly heavy, my thoughts are it was made from timber then glassed over so may need to look at that also but all is good and am looking forward to starting, just when I don't know but I'll post something when I do ;D

Hello watchers of all things new, different and interesting ;D spent a little time this arvo looking over the "ROAD CRUISER", although I didn't find any hard evidence but by my reckoning it appears that there maybe an extra 29" added to the original length, some evidence that leads me to believe this. What appears to be a join over the center window. And possibly near the power inlet, 29" apart. Then there are what appears to be joins around the wheel arches ( to reposition them perhaps?) And found this inside the wardrobe. Do you notice the step in the bracing that is glassed into the side? by my measurements it corresponds with the position of the join over the window, you can also see the internal lining protrudes into the wardrobe, the bit that is missing from the end to the doorway approximately 26" and the length of the window over the galley 30", I guess when I begin work on the van I may find more proof but till then we will just have to wait. OH! I also looked at the 2 smaller vans in DHL and going by what I measured on mine and scaling things as best I could I believe that I may be on the right track as it would make the smaller versions around 11' long which to me looks about right but wouldn't it be great if we could get some internal shots of the smaller versions to show their layout, may just help.

Hi humpyboy Your thorough investigative work certainly explains the different window above the sink area. Would doubt if having pics of the interior would have helped you much, as the interior layout would most likely have been changed when the van was stretched. Sadly, although I started the thread of the DHL van when I first spotted it, I really can't help you with the layout inside - sorry, but I've had a few sleeps and seen a few vans since then ;D I reckon just build what suits you, inside. After all, this would have been one of the only five ever built originally and the stretching would have changed the interior from the original anyway. Ray

G'day Derk Pretty interesting project with the van you have there, & it was a treat to call in & see it up close & have a chat. One can't imagine the glassed bracing would have a kink in it like that when it was made originally so reckon you are on the right track with your thoughts on the possibility it has been 'stretched'. Your sheds are full of intrigue, & cars, & especially the back one, maybe some more fessin' up ? When it dries up a bit more in Gippsland I will surely visit again. Great to meet up with you ST

Hi Ray, not sure just where your going with the layout thing, I don't intend to change what I have in any way, my remark about the layout of the smaller ones was more in the direction of just how much extra length was fitted and what did the smaller ones miss out on, ie: Wardrobe or perhaps the set of draws that I have next to mine or was the rear couch a different design, things along those lines, perhaps they had twin singles with a table between at the rear with kitchen across the front and no dinette??? Hmmmm thinking thinking thinking. ST, yes it was nice to meet you and I look forward our next, we just had a couple of days rain again so it's again damp under foot but fingers crossed it will only get drier. "Your sheds are full of intrigue, & cars, & especially the back one, maybe some more fessin' up ? "Um not sure what you mean here ST, I'm not hiding anything both items have been mentioned here ;D

Derk, I will be watching with interest to see how you do the repairs seeing your expertise is in the fibreglass area. I have only fibreglassed the hull of a wooden boat, but would like to know more about the processes, like what ATOG does, & if I remember rightly, Chev51.
Oh & by the way, it's me that has to fess up, you have disclosed everything. ;D ;D but will do that on another thread sometime soon

I looks on with envy in me eyes The roadcruiser has such nice lines You will make a great van out of this one I'm sure. When you get to the interior structure may I suggest using honeycomb and fibreglass instead of timber. The honeycomb is sandwiched between the fibreglass and gelcoat. This will give a real clean finish to everything you make up for the interior. 20mm Honeycomb is currently about $180 a sheet 1200x2300 For wardrobe and sink uprights it wouldn't need be that thick. I only know that price because of a project in the making ;D Using honeycomb and fibreglass means you can also strengthen the walls of the van because the interior can be glassed directly to the walls of the van. If you need any more info just give us a PM Cheers Atog the green with envy ;D

Thanks Atog I will keep that in mind but my first big challenge will be the roof where it has collapsed, I believe under the weight of the hatch, at first I had a suspicion that the hatch may have been made from timber then glassed over but when I was out there the other day I noticed a hole in the fibreglass and it looks as though the hatch is constructed around some type of foam and the hole has let water in so I now think it is this that has made the hatch so heavy but all of this will have to wait for another day as I try to catch up with all the things I neglected whilst building STU

Had a lazy afternoon so I spent a little time looking in and around the ROADCRUISER, think I may need to strip it out from the inside completely to do a proper job, the internal lining could prove to be a bit of a hassle as it is all fiberglass, looks to be one piece but must have joins somewhere but I can think about that for a bit, also crawled underneath to see if I could locate where the body was bolted to the chassis, Hmmm no bolts to be found anywhere, but I did find these, Sorry bout the blurry pic. Screws, don't know how many there are but it looks as though it has been screwed to the chassis through the floor so that is something I'll need to rectify, think I'd like bolts rather than screws, the entire floor will need to be replaced also so another reason to strip it out, his will also give me the chance to run all new wiring and insulate between the inner and outer skins.
