Hey there redo, why go to the trouble of getting new struts, just get extra pressure put in the ones u got, they will even come to your ouse ifa you wunt them 2, and I agree with the others, them blokes wot look after the site should moove it. ;D ....also meant to offer a suggestion about the struts too, if you change the mounting points opposite way to what you have, they'll work much better.....

I agree with Col. Love your posts Reddo, and always learning new ways to do stuff (and new ways to spell!). If I had a decent interbloodynet service I might get on here more often but when it takes around 2 to 3 hours to send photos to the bucket and then get them back on the forum I just get so frustrated and angry I just dont bother any more. This does not mean I dont read it, I am on here every day. As an aside I have spoken to Telstra again and they have admitted they have a problem where I live so they have given me 3 months free access to the service I get THAT STILL DOES NOT WORK. From my perspective the forum seems to have gone into hibernation since the Nationals. Hopefully it will spark up with the better weather. By the way JBJ, you said in an earlier post there was no alcohol free areas in a mans shed. I would have thought anybody would be glad of some free alcohol in their shed? ?? OK, I'm going. Leigh.

;D ;D ;D ;D Hi Thar happy campers.. ;D ;D. Been a while since i looked at this thread..... Come to think of it , its been a while since i done anything to the TD... Ya see,,,,,, There are things in life that get in the way of replica van builds....... old cars, old bikes, old vans, ... trips away with REAL.. old vans with my old van, old boats... Not so old wife... yard maintenance...Helping to demolish the verandah of the eldest sons house to make way for extensions. . So... things dont get visited as often as i would like to visit them. Thanks for the words of encouragement re the little van... and.... yes it is true, i suggested that the build history be moved into the "Whatever" section . Mainly because moderators have experienced the yelping from " Öthers" when i built The Splinter Hilton back in 2006 ......... Bloody odd though.... had thousands of viewings while it was being built. Far easier to leave it there ( whatever section) . If you read the subtitle /explaination put there by Mark Taylor years ago ( modified in later years to exclude jokes and offensive stuff..etc )you will see that my replica van builds have a LOT more relevance to vintage caravans .. and how to build them..... than a lot of the other stuff that turns up there. Here ya go... Use this board to discuss non related V V stuff, your religious, political, racism, age, sexually oriented & discriminitary opinions are not welcome. Administrators or moderators will remove or edit any thread/posting at any time, as they see fit. All items will be deleted after 30 days of the last posting unless deemed worthy of retaining in which case they will be moved to another section on the forum Read more: vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi#chat#ixzz2BfGU4uALI am not suggesting that any of that other stuff should be removed .. what i am asking the moderators is that the "Not Everyones Cup of Tea TD " Thread should be allowed to sit where it is without any further consideration by the moderators to remove it..whether it be for not making regular monthly updates .. or thinking that it may be offensive to some of the members. .......at least until it is finished ... ... " All items will be deleted after 30 days of the last posting unless deemed worthy of retaining in which case they will be moved to another section on the forum" So... i am between a rock and a hard place......The Thread cant be moved anywhere else as it doesnt fall into any of the other categorys.. apart from... maybe "General 2008 Onwards"... Noooo.. I think thats where i started it in... Kaybees.. ....I originally tried the shocks the other way up and they where no better than the way i have them now. I now have something to shop for at swap meets. Does this reply buy me another 30 days grace... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Regards Reddo

Hi Reddo,
I dont see why your thread would be deleted in 30 days, BUT I'm only one of the moderators.
I think what you are doing is great, but then I like all sorts of wierd things, like aussie Dodges, peace & quiet, ;D ;D ;D ;D JBj

Hiya Redd-o.....nah,not upside down...I meant the pivot positions be reversed....move the lower pivot closer to the top of that mounting rail and move the mount on the door further "outboard"......gives the gas ram better leverage on the door without having to make the ram stronger.....which would probably end up bending or breaking something......got it?...... ;D....ciao, c
.....still think this thread deserves better than "whatever"......as you pointed out about the Splinter , there's probably more folks who are actively interested and also learning from your exploits than there are of those who will go moaning to the moderators about some vaguely perceived injustice ..... ;D ;D

The Whatever Section says... " All items will be deleted after 30 days of the last posting unless deemed worthy of retaining in which case they will be moved to another section on the forum" and .. what i am asking the moderators is that the "Not Everyones Cup of Tea TD " Thread should be allowed to sit where it is without any further consideration by the moderators to remove it..whether it be for not making regular monthly updates .. or thinking that it may be offensive to some of the members. .......at least until it is finished ... but way back when Reddo first started, As various people have pointed out on the open forum and by PM, the thread doesn't involve a vintage caravan. But that doesn't mean it isn't of interest, as shown by the fact that lots of people have already pulled their armchair up to the computer screen waiting for the next episode. So...the place for it is "Whatever". And don't be concerned - the thread won't be deleted after 30 days (shouldn't have said that - now Reddo will lose his motivational tool to keep going with the project! ). No, it's here until the end of time...unless it really goes downhill and off track - and we all know that would never happen with one of Reddo's threads, would it. ;D ;D ;DDon Ricardo for the moderators So what's all this drama about. It'll stay in whatever unless the project collapses or is sold off. If neither of these outcomes eventuate, it'll probably be moved to Members Photo Album when it is a completed project and will be given the same status as the Splinter Hilton. Is everybody happy, you bet your life we are (hopefully). ;D ;D ;D Conti

;D Thanks for the clarification on how to mount the struts Col.... Shooda red your explaination more closely Its a learning thing aye And.. so... as the sun sets on another day in vintage van world .. the birds are singing.....horses are neighing.....angels decend amongst us strumming harps...... shafts of brilliant sunlight hit "the shed of invention "as i sit back and savoiur... no.. saviour... no....savour.... oh i dunno... i suck on a nice port and raise a toast to sanity ... and the moderators for calming the waters here on the forum..... regards Reddo

Hi All Been waiting for the day when i could finally get the fobbergross gaurds fitted up to the little van and see how it looks... Bloody difficult working with something that is raduised in all directions .. front to back.. side to side. and... no previous fitment bolt holes. Push the gaurd in at the front and you force the gaurd out at the back. So.. i anchored the lower front of the gaurd to the frame and worked my way up and over the gaurd to the tailpiece..using metalthread tech screws and staino 8mm bolts at either end End result..... The guards have changed the appearance of the van and if i had built the frame i would have moved the axle at least 2 further forward. I know that virtually everything in front of the axle and a little bit behind the axle is sleeping area ... but..... if you have the axle a little bit further forward than this set up you can reduce towball weight easily by setting up the water tank, battery box and a few other heavy objects behind the axle to help reduce that towball weight. I can see this van having a lot of towball weight when i go to use it as a bike hauler. about 80 % of the 185 Kg norton will be in front of the axle when tied in, Yeah i know it was originally designed to be a camper... but.. as i have just said.. even in that guise its gunna be heavy on the ball. Never mind.. its all fun. and .. i am happy that its starting to look like a van Was thinking of using rubber pipping between the gaurd and the body .. then had a fiddle with a bit of Üpside down J mould".. Should be able to bend a bit around the wheel arch to fill in the gap between body and gaurd... Regards Reddo

Reckon it`s gotta good stance about it Reddo even if it`s a few inches off towball balance weight.Love the steel cap chock! Great minds think alike /fools seldom differ with the idea of using J mould around the wheel arches. As my guards are rolled around 1/4" rod i`m doing the same as yours along the top edge.Gives it a better look. gordo

Hi all.. One happy puppy reporting that i have cured the slack struts problem. Took the sagging struts over to a company called "Ovesco". They have a wide range of hinges. latches, locks and all sortsa other good stuff for building industrial toolboxes.... and replica TD,s ;D,,, Check em out here...http://www.ovesco.com.au/ Scratched around the shelves and found a strut that was pretty close to the samples i took over there... The new struts had ... swivel ball joint style ends on them. I paid about $3 ea extra and got srew on ends with 8mm holes in them for either end of the strut. Bit difficult determing what pressure the old struts held so we done the simple "fat bastard"test. Push down on the old ones and check compression rate. Push down on the new ones and make sure it took more effort over a longer period to squish the rod up inside the ram... New struts are 20mm bore old struts where 16mm bore.. $35.99 ea Came home hoping that would squish up properly beween the two mount points when the tailgate closed fully.. and they did. Even ended up opening about 2"higher than before .. so i wont bank me noggin when i am unloading the bike etc. Open the gate and you only have to lift it to knee hieght and the rams take over all the way to fully open... one happy black duck... I called at Clark Rubber the other day... ( I think they are a nation wide company) Got a price on the rubber piping that goes between the mudgaurd and the body....... Was quoted $6.99 a metre.. Ovesco was pedaling it off for $2.55 a metre... so rounded up 5 metres . Next step is to get the gaurds back off .. repaired and painted. Might have a go at some upsidedown lino laying on the timber ceiling as well. Decided against sticking the lino on the roof.. that aluminium looks cool in my opinion... just better not polish it ( Glare) . Regards Reddo

Reddo, what a great job you are doing and how fantastic does the side-on view of the TD look. Also love the shape of the guards and the aluminium roof. It will be a real drawcard when on the road.
I noticed in the latest photos of the struts that you have installed the struts with the cyclinder at the bottom. I always understood that when installing struts, the cyclinder should be on the top and the inner rod on the bottom. I think it has something to do with continued lubrication of the rod. Hope this helps. Love this thread - always great reading. Gary

Hi Foss,,, Yup... you are probably right about the way the struts are supposed to face. My problem is i dont own anything modern enough to pull the bonnet or tailgate up and see which way the struts live..... ;D Might have to go and park at a servo and wait for someone to check their oil and water... then take notes and photos. Just happy to have them working and holding the wieght of the tailgate .... A mate that works with fibreglass for a living is calling in Monday arvo to take the gaurds and do a few small repairs on them for me. Hope to get the lino on the ceiling tomorrow.... Cheers Reddo

My Nissan X-Trail has the lift-up tailgate struts in the same direction as you have on your TD, Reddo. Perhaps it doesn't matter which way's UP, as long as the tailgate goes the same way ;D Ray

Hi All Had an interesting day yesterday... They reckon that you should learn something new every day.... I certainly did.... How to swear in a few different languages. Wasnt quite sure how ya suppose to glue lino overhead without it caving in on your head . How do you spread watery glue over head without it dropping down in blobs on your head and setting in your hair...... First thoughts where to flip the van on its lid and work on the ceiling as you would if it was the floor......Bit of a major effort to turn it upside down so... dropped that idea... Next brainwave was to tong and brace the lino and work my way from the floor at the front doing about 500mm at a time across the width of the van..... Dead set simple .. or so i thought..... Before i started glueing things up i had to cut the hole in for the front window... This gave me a "toe hold"for a couple of G clamps as i worked my way up and over... So.. with the lino cut to width and length i set to work Bloody awkward doin this on your own in a confined space with knees and elbows that have coped 58 years of abuse and neglect.. I used an old paint roller tro iron out the wrinkles as best i could. There was/still is a few bubbles where i hadnt spread the glue on evenly and left a few dry spots... I employed a technic i call"The Norman Gunston Upproach"to trying to coax the bubbles to take to the ply... ;D Bits of 3 ply and pin nails.... By now i was getting off my head on the fumes and having a bit of a giggle to boot Cut in around the hatch, front window and across near the tailgate and.......Managed to bung the floor in as well... Ladies and Gentleman..... please take your partners and join me for the progressive barn dance on the freshly laid floor board ceiling and floor in the TD town hall.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ... Next project.... I am off to Alspec in Lambton to by a stack of J mould ..... Should be a barrel of fun getting that to sit right on the van... But hey... at least i will be standing upright... Now wheres that glue pot again... sniff sniff... aaaaaaaaaaahhh thats better. Reddontrythisathome

Yo... Knee cap swelling has gone down so i found a bit of time on Monday to run around and buy the J mould and some 20mm angle to use around and in the van. 5 X 4metre lengths of 25mm J mould cost $7.50 ea... a big drop in price since i last bought this stuff back in 2008... 2 X 6.5 metre lengths of 20mm X 20mm angle Total cost .. around $75.00 the lot. Moral of the story.. if you are restoring a van dont mess about with old J mould... Go buy some new stuff. Also got thinking about how they use to seal where the roof meets the walls. I have restored a few vans over the years and have noticed that the old van biulders often used a material like Tar paper which over lapped the roof and down onto the sides of the van , finishing behined the J mould. When i built the splinter hilton TD i didn t use a J mould just filled the join between roof and wall with builders bog and sanded it smooth. I ended up using J mould over that join later on.. When i fixed the aluminium to the steel frame of this TD i used sikaflex and pop rivets. It sealed down nicely but i felt it needed something else in there before i fit the J mould. I hate using sealants and butil mastic etc,,,, so i have decided to take the same approach as the old van builder and use tape. So .... Off to the big green shed and troll the aisles... bingo.. Just what i need... Stop Leaks..... 3 metres X 70mm roll costs $13.50 Sounds a bit steep .. but isnt too bad when you consider that you can cut the tape into three equal strips of around 23mm ... Which on the Td works out at 4.5 metres each side.... The Tape is bitumous with alfoil on one side and a plastic peel away tape on the backing., So...after filing down the heads on the rivets. I wiped the roof clean ...... allowed about 15mm on the roof of the van and ran it up.. over ...and .. down the back of the van. Then came back and rolled and tucked the edge over the edge of the aluminium roof which i had let protrude out over the side of the van about 2mm when i cut and fitted it. Then .. smoothed it onto the side of the van... bingo... water tight seal. This stuff is really easy to work with and you dont have dripping tubes of goop to contend with while sticking it down... It can expand and contract with heat and cold and gives a uniform seal the entire length of the van sides/roof. . Took about 1/2 hour to cut and install. The whole length of tape will be hidden uner the J mould which i will rivet on . the tape should squish up against the j mould and form a seal under it. Only thing i didnt do was use a pair of Pinking shears as they did when cutting the old aircraft tape to seal over joins in the ply and roof to wall joints.... Would love to get stuck in and fit a few moulds ... but... I am off to the meatworks friday to have my right hand carved up... Had enough of the pins and needles waking me up every night... Getting a carpal tunnel op done to restore circulation . So .. will just have to sit and drink beer for a week or two...... ;D Now THATS something i am good at.... Regards Reddo

I saw that flashing tape in the big green shed too and wondered if it would do the job, Reddo. Would ya mind spraying a Gurni/Karcher on it at full pressure wen you have finished and let us know the results ;D ;D ;D Good luck with the Carpel op too. I need both my hands done too according to the Doc and have been putting it off for 3 years now. Ray
