Gordon... dunno what happened there. ..I had the post up and then it disappeared. During that time you must have replied and.. the original post disappeared... So... here it is again.... Spare wheel is done. Sat wheel in place and marked drawbar where rear of tyre sat vertically against the van front. Cut a 40 x 40 box section and bolted it in across the drawbar with 2 x 6mm coachbolts. Marked front drawbar flush where front wall of tyre meets drawbar, Cut 40 x 40 angle and teck screwed in place from underneath so that if I ever end up with a skinnier spare I can move the front bar back and still keep the wheel at right angles to drawbar. Bolted 2 X eyebolts through back cross bar and attached 2 X turnbuckles with "S" hooks Sat wheel in place and attached S hooks at around the "10 to 2 " position. Tensioned Turnbuckles and spun down wing nuts on the right hand threads of turnbuckles to prevent the turnbuckles coming loose due to movement/vibration while travelling. The distance back from the s hooks on the spokes to the centre of the eye bolts is around 80mm. So when the turnbuckles are tightened the wheel pulls down into the drawbar and back against the van due to the triangulation....geez listen to me trying to sound technical... Hay... it works. Only issue I can see with this set up is that the front edge of the tyre where it sits on the drawbar is tacking all the load. Might cause a "groove/Vee in the edge of the tread. Answer would be to run to 12mm square section bars from the front cross bar to the rear bar and weld a 150 mm wide "u" shaped flat bar between these 2 so the tyre is cradled on the flatbar... However... me being a slacko I will go with the theory that tyres are resilient little devils and any vee in the tyre would soon disappear one rolling along on the road ... well . ..... wouldn't it . Gunna tackle the trailer plug to tail/brake/indicator/clearance light wiring today.. Look for mushroom shaped cloud on the horizon Listen for fire brigade.... and.... swearing Regards Reddo

Yo... Right from the start I said I wasn't going to polish the TD Rod for my back!! Lotsa maintenance Polishing would make it look "New' But... I have weakened. Spent a few nights down the shed sanding most of the scratches out of the alloy.. started with 120 grit freecut Then 240.. then 360.. finishing off with 800 wet and dry paper. Then attacked the whole thing with fine steel wool. Sorta liked the "brushed" look but figured I had come this far I may as well see what it would lok like shiney Started polishing yesterday.. .Started out using a small 100mm dia buffing wheel and following up with a 250mm polisher...not doin too good.. Squiggly polish marks everywhere.... Looked bloody terrible Went and bought a 6 inch calico flapper wheel at Bunnings. Bunged it in the drill... slapped some cutting compound on the alloy... kept going and finished it today...... I still have to wash the whole thing down with warm soapy water to get the polish residue off the metal.. then I will probably have a go at it with something finer than cutting compound to try and get rid of the motely look... Also managed a few hours last week on the inside and got a coat of " eu de Nil " .. Left over Reddo fleet colour from one of the other van resto.. or.. builds. When its finished you wont see much of the green as there will be cupboards etc on the walls... just figured it be better to paint the walls now so that when the cupboards do go in they will be finished on the insides . Got a Roster Day this coming Friday. Plan is to book it in for its rego inspection. Go get a weighbridge ticket beforehand.. get it over those hurdles... head for the RTA and hopefully have a nice yellow and black plate on the back by next weekend. That'll mean I am about half way through the build.. . Once its registered as an enclosed box trailer I will make a start on the internal fitout and electrics, etc Pleny of events coming up to test its "towability" out .... Xmas in July at Forster or the following weekend.. Nabiac Motorbike swapmeet or the weekend after that.. All Holden Day and .. the weekend after that Cessnock swapmeet Geez .. I better be nice to the "Cheese and kisses" or I wont be going anywhere Cheer Reddo

;D ;D ;D "Please explain"... I see Pauline is throwing her hat into the political arena again .. and I applaud her. Her campaign slogan is.. " A Redhead you can trust". .. as opposed to....... JG I know there is limitations here on the forum about politics .. religion and just about anything that isn't quite P.C nowadays.. But .. I wish her luck. "NECOT " was originally coined by Gordon -DC3TD. ... or was it Sutcac?? Have to go back over the posts to find the answer to that one?? Havent come up with a proper christening name as yet.. will probably decide on something while the bro is standing waiting with paint dripping off the brush in anticipation. A few have crossed my mind.. " The Tin spud." ( shape and colour) " The Allrounda " ( due to its shape and proposed uses) " Mellow Yellow." ( Colour) " The Cozen. " ( dictionary quotes : Cheat ... as in fake... replica vintage van) " Road Toad" ( slight resemblance to a Toad from behind) "The Drovers Dog"... ( Always behind ya where ever ya go) .. Oh I give up.... Reddo

Ladies and Gentlemen I rang "Lizabeth" over in the old country ... you know the lady with the corgis .and shiney rocks stuck in 'er 'air Sorta gave a bit of a @ullsh!t story about how I have been buildin' a portable travellin royal dog kennel for the little ginger mutts to ride around in while she nicks down ta Woolies ta pick up a few groceries on cheap Tuesdays. She seemed quite interested and asked if I was "for real or what" So just ta show er I aint just another half baked convict wot knocked orf a loaf a bread a few undred years ago I sent er orf a few happy snaps of the finished item... Well folks before I knew it I gets an email back from QE11... "Dear colonial type.. The corgis are overjoyed with the shots of their new mobile dung mound. To show our appreciation I am declaring this coming Monday a public holiday here in Brittan as well as all her colonial outposts...and outhouses Yes .. yes I know it has been traditionally celebrated as my birthday but I am proclaiming it NECOT Day ;D ;D ;D ;D I have asked the palace to grant you a pardon as well..( does this mean I don't have to apologies when I burp and fart in public anymore?? ed) and have authorized the full NSW registration of the hound hauler .. We have scanned the achives and found your original court proceedings notice and have allocated that number for the purpose of registration... Court records show the following from 1788.... Y-81945 Weight ... 440kg Shape.......Van/trailer style... VNT ( for vintage ) Bloody bewdy Queenie.... Ta luv If I was to claim it as a new build 2013 manufacture I would have had to supply receipts for every piece of material I have used on it.. NSW legislation?? ... ya gotta love it. glad the original owner started on it a few years back otherwise I would have been weighed down with a paper trail. Also.. any Trailer/TD that weighs more than 250kg attracts the same rego fees as a van up to 750kg. Once ya get over 750kg you need brakes and attract ..."inspection required" yearly on your rego papers. Anyway.. if I get pulled up by the troopers i'll just tell em its all cool with the corgis and their owners. ;D Who knows... I might even get deported back to England... Reddo

Great effort, reddo, and a great result!! Congratulations and well done on another fine achievement out of the Shed of Invention. Can't help you with any name suggestions, but to me the finished TD looks like a type of underwater exploration module, so maybe a nautical name might fit (but don't go for 'Titanic' or for sure it will leak on the first night ). cheers, Al.

Hey Daryl Ya not gunna believe this...I walked into the shed this morning and took a look at the struts. After messing with the tailgate and struts ...as well as opening and closing the tailgate at least 100 times over the passed 6 months I finally got around to reading the yellow sticker on the "Fat" end of the strut..... 2 letters about 25mm font stating "UP"... Doh.. doh... doh.... what a bonehead I am.... If ya hadn't alerted me to the upside down issue they probably would have stayed that way until I was sitting having a beer at the tailgate and noticed the sticker.... Wait a minute... I have sat at the tailgate having a beer ( or several) just about every day I have worked on it...... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Moral of the story... Don't be a typical bloke and throw away / neglect to read any instructions that come with a gadget... ya might just learn something from them.... Cheers mate Reddo

Yo... Fiddled on with the roof hatch , XJ jaguar fuel filler caps and a bit more polishing on Saturday... Been toying with different types of "Holderopeners" to keep the hatch up... I bought a chrome spring with brackets from BIAS a few months back. from memory... less than $10... The boaties use em on cabin hatches that need to open and lock in place. When you want to close it you just give it a bump anywhere along its length and it bends allowing the lid to shut...only downside is you cant set the thing at different opening angles... So.. after moulding out around the hatch with 25mm aluminium angle I worked out how high i wanted the hatch to hinge up ...... mounted the spring and gave it a test run. I can even get my melon out through the hatch gap.... handy if ya not sure what sort of day it is outside and want to know weather to stick a pair of Ockanuys (spell? board shorts) on or slip on the bogan tracky daxs and jumper. Moved on to the filler caps.... mounted em above the taillights,,, left side will be the water tank filler cap. Right side will be the 15A power inlet... Not sure weather to mount the male plug in the filler cap or just make the lead up so it can be inserted through the cap and plug inside the van ?? Hmmmmm..... .. I wander if I can rig up a drum / reel retractor like a vacumn cleaner That way all I would have to do is grab the plug and run it out to the power pole. When its time to pack the lead up all I would need to do is press a release button( like on a vac cleaner) and the lead would retract back into the filler cap.. would need either a very strong return spring... or...... ... maybe use a 12volt starter motor to drive the drum and retract the lead... .. wwwwwwaaaayyyyy cooool. ;D Better have a yarn with the layabout engineers down in the " shed of invention"... Stay tuned...

NECOT is a credit to your workmanship Reddo I love the way it has turned out and every time you add something new it looks even better, just don't let the hugs and kisses know that you are after her vac, when she finds the bits missing just tell her you were going to do the vacuuming as a surprize for her and it broke! she will never let you near her vac again, job done no vacuuming for the rest of your life. ;D

Gday Reddo. Now don`t go sticking the nozzle down any of them filler caps next time you call into the local garage! That`s an awesome looking effect you came up with though. As for retractors - plenty of vacs lying around the streets or - lots of tradies have small air line retractors fitted to their vans.
