Hey Reddo,
looking great. Good to see you have your priority sorted. Cant have alcohol free zones in work sheds.
I'm just lucky I'm the only drinker in my shed.

Hi Reddo, Looks like the project is coming along nicely. You'd almost think that you'd built a teardrop before... I'll be interested to see how you go about providing some home comforts for yourself as well as a good strong stable for the bikes. Some of them bikes can really buck and kick when they're caged up you know. A while ago I saw (and I think kept, but not sure where) an article about a chap who has a restored a little Ferguson tractor and takes it around to country shows. He converted a truck to provide caravan accommodation for himself at night, but he could drive his tractor in some back doors to transport it. Looked quite odd to see the tractor parked next to the sink and stove, but it seemed to work. Are you going to unroll your swag between two bikes? Don Ricardo

Hi Don R No... the bike gets kicked out on arrival at a rally. I hope to be able to fit a 4ft wide sponge matteress in the roof above the bike. held up with something like bed slats that sit into upward facing "C sections mounted about 450mm apart and 75mm down from the ceiling on either side wall. That should be enough to "Pin "the matteress up out of the way when i roll the bike back in. Was toying with mounting a small air compressor under the van and using an inflatable air matteress which would be stored in cupboard space. But i think the sponge mattress is a better idea. I suppose people are wandering by now where all the wires are going to run now that the cavitys have been filled with styrene.?? Hoping to use long top cupboards from front to back on the right side of the van and across the front above the front window and run all the 240v and 12v power through there. . Cheers Reddo

Yo.. The big plus about rainy weekends is that ya get bonus shed time... Got stuck into a bit of external cladding on saturday... Fnished both sides late in the arvo and left the sikaflex to set until sunday. I have used 1/8"pop rivets through the sheet joins across the middle of the van and also very close to the outer edge of the sheets. The join will be covered with a half round mould or maybe a nice piece of exteror grade ply cut in a "flash "like on the old cussos or EK holdens etc shape then stained a cleared. The rivets around the edge will be hidden under the rolled edge of the Alloy J mould on the roof to wall join.. Started on fitting the 3 point door lock and hanging the door Door now has a key lock and swings shut nicely... Next step will be to move back onto the ceiling sheets.. finsh off the insulation as far back as the tailgate hinge and then tackle the alloy roof cladding. Cheerio Reddo

Looks good Reddo. I like your 3way lock. Pretty secure ! What are you doing for a door seal? I have to make ours seal better as we get a bit of water blown in on Diannes side. She doesn't like sleeping in a wet spot ! Cheers . John

"Hi Jondi I will be making an inner door jam out of 10mm ply . it screws to the inner wall sheeting and overlaps the door opening by about 12mm. Then use 10mm thick X 12mm wide sponge tape on the outward facing surface of the jam to seal agains the door when it shuts. I will also make an arch shaped "Brow" out of 12mm ply to go over the top of the door on the outer skin . Most problems with door seals on any van come from water ingress on the leading ( front edge ) the door where the locking mech is. maybe its some sort of venturi effect due to flow through air /water getting past the door seal and heading for van vents or anywhere the air can escape from the inside of the van.. poor window seals or roof vents that dont seal fully shut when travelling "Suicide door"set ups ( doors with hinges at the rear of the door - like most vans are) are more prone to leaking that those with front mounted hinges. which usually have 3 hinges or a continous length of piano hinge holding the door. Spose its because there is only one point where the door is held firmly shut by the latching mech.... .. so... hopefully a three point latching /locking set up will cure the leaking situation. Most TD doors are fairly light weight construction and can get a slight bow in them allowing moisture in at the top and bottom. Regards Reddo

Hello Kiddies Its your old uncle Reddo back from another safari taking in a few swapmeets and buying all sortsa useless junk for the Cuppa T TD... bloody hell .... i am gunna have to come up with a better name than that for it aye... Anyways ... managed to score a 12V snake light of MRFJ55 at All Holden Day swapmeet.... . Looks a bit like those Hella Tripmeter lights the rally drivers use....?? Ha da great weekend with Maurie and his young bloke Robbie as well as Chippydave and his swapmeet partner in crime "Neil"...Lotsa beers and laughs on saturday night.. and Maurie kept us entertained with his salesmanship at his stand.. Watch out Torana drivers trying to get a bargain on Mauries Torana Radio.... man does he get wound up when someone insults him with a cheap offer.... Trolled around the car show on sunday lookin for a replacement towcar now that the FB van has gone..... Came across the van withits new signwriting on it .... Didnt spot anything that took my fancy.... or my money. Went to cessnock swap last weekend. managed to score some lights that might work on the back of the TD... el cheapo chinese things for motorbikes that might tidy up OK. been scrounging VW beetle lights for a while so might use the front gaurd lights for clearance lights on the side of the TD up front.. Picked up a small glass window which probably came out of a rag top tourer or roadster... Has bevelled glass and for $10.00 i thought io might be able to fit it in the rear tailgate of the TD.. Nearly stood on this mushroom shaped roof vent.... Not sure what i am going to do about ventilation inside the Td.. I know i can open the roof hatch , but i thought i could use this and mount it just behine the hatch to clear the beer farts out of a night time ;D ;D . While i was at the swap with the FJ ute and Old Blue a bloke told me about an old van he has on the central coast... i am welcome to it .. or any parts i wanted. Managed to head down there sunday lunchtime and attacked the van ... didnt have any tools with me , but we managed to pop a few goodies out of the van.. The 3 story ice chest... and some of its hardware... was missing the door off thye top sect where the ice block goes in ... but wouldnt be hard to knock up a newy. Nice big staino sink with deep basin .. and .. a useable pump... ät's about it fa now.. not much wood butcherin goin on ... Going through a "gathering"period at the moment. Toodles fa now. ;D Hiya Kaqz. Glad to hear the old ( well its 6 years old now) is getting a good run around. It has seen plenty of inclement weather and i would recommend taking it back to raw timber and building up some good thick coats of primer sealer undercoat again. Spend a bit of time doing it right and the TD will be right for years to come. I dont care how well things are made ... anything that is made from wood that has to be towed down the road and cop potholes.. bumps .. exhaust gases.. crap weather both sun and rain will inevitably end up detriorating. Give the splinter a cuddle for me will ya.. done a bit on the Cuppa TD last weekend....Slapped the aluminuim roof on .... lotsa snipping around the hatch and it fell into place .. front and roof is good.. still plenty to do at the back before i can get the carpet layers in to stick the lino on the roof... I managed to get a coat of paint on either side of the bike hauler TD on saturday. will let it harden for a week and give it a light sand with 240 grit .. a dust off and a second coat .. weather permitting. Been workin on a rusty old HR ute trying to get it up and running for the Tathra /Tour/Coledale extravaganza. Spent this arvo getting the head off it so no real progress on the TD today.. so many projects.. so little time . Regards Reddo

PS...( don't anybody else read this bit ) .....see where Jenno is going to monogram all his hubcaps in the event of "loss".......I reckon we can systematically nick 'em and flog them back to him during the next tour , should be good for a laugh ;D ;D

Hi Kaybees.... Yup.....imitation Lining board lino is going over the alumium. Not too sure how U V tolerant it is ... but i figure a good spit and polish with some armour all should prevent it cracking, Board pattern will run "longitudally"that is.. planks running up and over the van rather than crossways. Inside floor will get black and white check lino and walls and ceiling will get carpet once i sort out the cupboards etc Ther will be bugger all paint inside cause everything will have carpet or lino on it... maybe not shagpile like all the old pannos use ta have stuck to the walls and roof in the back. Wont need a mop and bucket to clean inside just a good strong cleaner........ ... but she reckons she wont get in there with a motorboik ;D I am raising money for the lino by knocking off hubcaps and reselling them to the owners Cheers fa now Reddooners

Yo... Managed to get a few hours in on the TD on saturday.. Finished the roof over to the tailgate,.... Then i had a go at cladding the tailgate.. .. Had a bit of success there... . Startin ta look like a caravan... Also found time last week to finish painting both sides and refit the door with handle and lock Cost me $95.00 for a sheet of Western red cedar 9.5mm laminate ply at misterplynwood.... gunna stain it to a dark red and cut an " ärrow"( al la woodie) shape about 7ft long to fit on either side to help cover that join line ya can see down the wáist on either side.... Will holkd off doin that until after the gaurds are fitted so i can get a better idea of what shape to cut it so it "marries up"and looks right... 'at's about it fa now. Reddo

Hidey Ho Thar Lovers of Fake, cheap , replica imitatition nobody loves em half baked and illconcieved loosely constructed piles of poop that detract from the REAL vintage caravan phycie ( ummmm... dunno how to spell cscicky.. physchy...) Anywho.. i get the feeling from the last post i need to be active and constructive atherwise i will void my contract with the admonsters.. So.. Justa prove i aint been goofin off while i was away on the tathra/tour / Coledwetandsoggydale adventure i have tooken a cuppla pigtchas of wot hive been upta in the..... Shed of Inventation.'' A while back i messed with the round axle that Rod had slid under the van. and sorta hung the fobbergross gaurds over them.. always appeared to have wwwwaaayyyy too much gap between the gaurds and the tyre shoulder... Here is a geeza at what i am onabout.. Sooo.. ta keepmaself occupied today i measured the axle length... 1600mm Then i measured the distance from the inner gaurd to the tyre on either side... i can go 50mm wider either side... Ya canty see the tyre in this photo but i reckon the gaurds are about right for the width of the van.... So... Off to the trailer place and buy a brand new 40mm X 1700 mm axle . 4 u bolts and 4 fish plates... Kaching.. $135. Try doin that with ya big fat flabby overweight vans that need ta have all that new fangle "lectric brake crappo all over em to make em stop... No siree Bob.. not on this el cheapo relica ;D ;D ;D ;D Teardrops are dead set a money saver.. specially when ya workin to ya own design and not some imported design from the land of milk and Obama Its only saturday and i have had a productive day... managed to do a deal with a bloke on the central coast. He now got the Old Harley pup .... and a fist full of Piascos .. I dragged home a 1937 Ariel twin port.. Have spent the passed 3 weeks chipping away at the issues that come from storing a bike incorrectly for 10 years.. Got it regoed today ( in amongst van buildin) .. took it for a run and siezed it up.... sat and mulled things over for a while in 34 deg heat.. she cooled down and i fired it up and rode home.... No ill effects.. just need to sort out why and then... try again.. Here ya go.. Still gotta attach the tailgate on the TD... Oh Joy, Oh Bliss, Oh exctacy.. son just rang ... he has caved the tailgate in on the box trailer and tore the wiring harness to threads.... ... This tree dad,,, it,,, it just sorta stepped in behind my 4X4 while i wasnt lookin/ reversing If ya ever gunna vote for something... vote for a 3 day weekend.. there just aint enough time fa all this in a 2 dayer Plenty to do.. Geeeeeszz... I'd like ta find time to go to Ballina Vint van weekend next weekend.....and.. see Dossie get older ;D ;D ;D .. Not Bloody likely There ya go admin.. Am i orf the hook..... ;D ;D ;D ;D Reddbitzallovertheplace

Hey Reddo,
Life gets shorter as we get older I think.
I like your thingamy, certainly looks much better than most of the new "teardrops" being built & sold as "retro"
I think you did a smart move changing bikes. I reckon the late 30's early 40's pommy bikes have a class to them.
It would be great if you could get up to Ballina next weekend, I reckon it will be great weekend, but I know how big a drive it is from here to Newcastle. Much more than most realise.
But if you dont make it up here, we hope to get to Newcastle & see our family & you guys before Christmas, as well as get to Canungra, Yamba Rod Run, & have my retirement party sometime as well.

I hate staying home when theres weekends away like South Ballina.happening But.. a mans gotta face facts and realise ya cant be everywhere at the same time... So... where do ya go when a cant be somewhere else,,,,,,,, Down the shed..... Got the tailgate staino hinge and struts on the TD, sorta in place and working.. [The 2 struts that came with the van from Rod are just the right length . They are off a VR Commodore bonnet ..... i think.. and even without the internal lining for the tailgate they wont support its weight.... Sooo.. will need to do a rethink there.. maybe tailgate struts are more robust. Finished off most of the roof hatch . secured it on piano hinge with 24 staino self tappers then went back to the tailgate and ... Got the locking mech working... Primitive but as smooth as silk and the lock works perfect... Got bored with the technical stuff and by lunchtime i had the two side strips in place ......Starting to look like a fully dressed TD ... Did i say its lookin like a TD More like Marvins cousin "Mervin The Martian". Oh yeah.. the 1700mm axle is in place .. gaurds looked good on the trial fit up... just have to find a backyard fobbergrosser to do a few small infill repairs and the elephant will have its ears.... Sorry about the miskeys.. just got home from a pre xmas drink with 50 old speedway/ short circuit mates ... beer, ham and bullshit for 5 hours Regards Reddo

Hiya Reddo, all that good work you're doing ,plus all the effort you go to posting the pictures and sharing your experiences......and...... nuthin', .....seems the main interest in the forum these days is irrelevant odd pictures of places with no caravans in them, or posting names of caravans and little else apart from new folks wanting to buy a van.......gotta wonder what's going on and where all the interested people have gone. I'd like to see your thread in the Members section , it seems a little insulting to have it sitting in the "whatever" section , 'coz it ain't a "whatever" , it's a signifigant effort to create an old style van and reflects the spirit and creativity shared by all the original old caravan guys back when you didn't just rush out and buy a" ready made", you laboured long and hard in your backyard shed , using your imagination , ingenuity and perseverence to achieve your goals....... great stuff as always, Reddo....cheers, Col.
