Derk if the ute doesn't get much use one of those battery conditioning chargers is worth the effort, they do extend battery life in toys!

No photo but if you go back to the first post you will get the idea, returned home again via the back of a flat top was driving along nicely sitting on 60 mph took an exit off the freeway got to the lights and she stopped, no reason just stopped would turn over well but wouldn't fire, so far I have repaired the little pigtail earth out of the vacuum advance, made sure the bolt that goes through the side of the dizzy is not earthed to the body, changed coils with the other car, checked that power lead to coil and the neg are good and have spark at the points but the thing still refuses to fire any ideas? Please.

hi derk
reddo christened my falcon ute "the blue heeler" because of the amount of time it spent on the back of a truck - hope you're ute's not gunna end up with nick name like that.
the only thing i can suggest is to check the spark at the plugs (get your wife to hold the plug lead while you crank it over ;D) and make sure the fuel system is doing it's job.

Hi Derk, I think the car is a bit of a lemon.......I'll give you $100.00 to take it off your hands...and you won't have any more problems!!!!! Steve WOW now there's an offer that I CAN REFUSE sorry mate you'll have to go a bit higher with offer, just went out to have another look and found my old dizzy so swapped over the cap and rotor button but still nothing, I did however find that I have no spark at the plug so what I need to find out now is why?? everything else sems to be good except for the fact that when I remover the pos wire from the coil it sparks which makes me think I do have a short somewhere, maybe it's that wire going to ground you may well ask? so why does it do it when I run a wire direct from the batt to the coil, the coil is Ok cos it came off the other car and the one off the Ute works on the sedan so it is definatly not that.

Well done Dirk, its a pain when you have problems locating a fault....but a big relief when it is finally solved. I really didn't want it as I didn't want to have to build another shed extension...... Steve

Probably about time I tell you all what I found with my dizzy, I found that the insulator that sits over the mounting pin was the problem, at first the Auto elec thought it had melted but then I remembered speaking with a mate who was telling me that he was having trouble fitting a new set of points to his FJ as well, as it turns out the people who make points for Grey motors are making the hole in the insulator to small and it is a very tight fit over the pin, so whom ever it was that rebuilt the dizzy I had in the Ute had forced it to fit thus allowing the metal part of the points to work on the insulator rather than the insulator working on the pin so it was just a matter of time before it wore through the insulator enough to create a short so before fitting up the new set I had to ream out the hole (using a drill bit) then finished it off with a chainsaw file till I had a nice fit and it's all good now, took it out to a local show here the naxt day and she went well both there and back.
