1. I had to tie him in, he keeps falling over drunk, & we have suffered attempted Santa thefts in the past Couldn't put a beautifully restored van at the front gate for the same reason 2. The Sun is pretty bright in Australia & that's his beard! 3. I really felt it was my best Santa yet but you are obviously not fooled 4. Because of all those naughty kids, Santa has chucked it in & gone camping in Australia. Somewhere near here;

Hi SGTL,
That's the statue of champion cyclist Sir Hubert Opperman in Rochester, Victoria, his birthplace - and near you.
And just to prove the 'six degrees of separation' rule, Sir Hubert lived his last days and died in a retirement village in Wantirna, Victoria, where Dona Ricardo's mother lives, and very close to the farm where I spent my childhood. Strangely enough - but perhaps appropriately for a champion cyclist - he apparently died riding an exercise bike at the age of 94!

Great to get an answer from one who knows! I was sure a 'search google for this image' would have it solved. A step relation of Mr SGTL's 'Fatty Lamb' also rode with Oppy I believe. Over to you Don Ricardo

Host to the annual Fat Tyre Festival, Melrose lies at the base of Mt. Remarkable in the southern Flinders Ranges, actually pretty close to my earlier "where's this" photo of Alligator Gorge.

Wow Franni, That was quick! But yes, you are correct. If you look down the centre strip, just before the road sign, you can just make out a sculpture which looks like this: The sculpture reflects two activities for which Melrose is famous - cycling (more particularly mountain biking, hence 'Fat Tyre Festival') and walking/hiking. Over to you Franni. Don Ricardo

Yep, a bit too quick. i should have waited [actually i "should" have been polishing Shirley's endless aluminium trims instead of meandering around the forum] We lived for 20 years near Melrose and some of our offspring are still there. great place to raise kids and ride the mountain trails. our youngest son and family have an accommodation business a few k.s out of town but there is no advertising on this forum so i can't tell you about that.
so, somewhere else….
