Hi King Fisher, No, not Port Fairy. It's not in Victoria, and while both this place and the Tower Hill vistor's centre are not too far from the sea, that's not the main connection. The building concerned is on a main highway and I'm sure that many forum members have passed it on their travels. Here's a photo of the same place when it was newly built: OK, that probably doesn't tell you much, the next photo should tell you the purpose of the building: Don Ricardo

Ok the black & white reminded me of Frank Lloyd Wright and after some googling. Tower Hill State Park is a state park of Wisconsin, United States, where Frank Lloyd Wright museum is nearby.
As for which town in Victoria that is I cant say. Maybe Warrnambool?

Hi Gypsy 10,
You are ranging far and wide! Funnily enough you are closer than you might think with your reference to Frank Lloyd Wright, but it is not him. That provides a bit of a clue.
Just to get things back on track, the first building I posted - which had been posted previously - is at the Tower Hill state park near Warrnambool, Victoria. However, while there is a connection between the first and second building, the second is not in Victoria. It definitely is in Australia, and I'm 100% certain that many forum members will have driven past it.

Hi Gypsy 10, You are correct - it's the Black Dolphin Motel at Merimbula, and designed by the architect Robin Boyd, as was the visitor centre at Tower Hill. The motel is on the road between Merimbula and Pambula. When motels were first established in Australia in the late 50's, they very much followed along the lines of American motels. Boyd poured contempt on the designs in his writings such as his book The Australian Ugliness. In 1960 Boyd produced the design for the Black Dolphin Motel: "With its simple construction, use of unpainted rough-sawn timber, and splendid views of bush and sea, the Black Dolphin sought to show how a true, environmentally sensitive modernism might humanise the new functional forms of the motor age...'At the Black Dolphin you will not find - Palm trees - Pretentious menus - A war of primary colours - Second-rate imported wines - The latest American gimmicks' ". (Graeme Davison, Car Wars: How the Car Won our Hearts and Conquered our Cities, 2004, pp 101-102) Here are pics of the motel with the name visible, and a view from the motel over the Merimbula Lake: The Black Dolphin has another reason for being significant to Dona Ricardo and me. It's where we had our honeymoon when it was a big deal to have your honeymoon interstate! Your turn Gypsy 10. Don Ricardo PS Graeme Davison's book is a great read if you're interested in how the motor vehicle has impacted on the development of Australian cities. And he comes from a caravanning family - see here
