Thanks guys for this very handy information.... At least I have a clue now how to operate the fridge.... As my fridge is old I have one question... Do we just try it on 240V and then see if the thing doesnt blow up we try gas??? I know about gas lines etc being cracked etc... but what about the ammonia or whatever inside the fridge? I was thinking of checking frige works whilst it is out of van when i do the reno.... My sister told me something about just turning the fridge upside down for a few minutes then righting it and then lighting it.... her ex was a fridgey so maybe there is something to it.... Anyone heard of this???

Just had an old guy out to do a gas cert , and a couple of changes to our old van, and he said if it does not cool properly, as it has not been used for many years, to take it out and carefully rotate the fridge a couple of times then sit for a couple of hours, apparently the coolant "settles" Neal

Just wondering if anyone is currently using this style of fridge? I am considering dusting off the old fridge and checking out if it still works - or if it is feasible to get it working ... I was wondering if anyone has been through the process of checking out an old gas fridge that hasn't been used for some time? If so, best way to do so? Plans for bench testing at this stage are: 1. Pull off panels and check for cleanliness, signs of leakage, damage or other issues. 2. Check data plate for correct inlet pressure. 3. Obtain and fit up (or get fitted up temporarily) appropriate regulator, and gas cock. 4. Run and see if it gets cold! 5. If it doesn't get cold, try the upside down trick and try again. Stumbled across this link to Servel (Electrolux-Servel) fridges in my travels ... Cheers Doug

My morphy gas / electric had been sitting round in the van and unused since the 70s! It didn't work when I switched it on so I checked the connections for voltage and checked the electric element wasn't open circuited , checked the thermostat was working ok ( I'm a sparky) but if your not sure about your thermostat just short it out to test if its getting cold. It still didnt work so I rolled,it around upside down a couple of times and that sorted it! Hope that helps Cheers Andrew ;D

Thanks Andrew, my fridge is gas only, so not sure how the thermostat works on it yet, I am guessing some sort of bimetal strip that operates to control the gas flow to the burner???
Hopefully I will be into it tomorrow, time permitting!
Cheers

Turned the fridge upside down for a couple of days, grabbed some new line and fittings and cracked the gas a little; and its leaking from the burner / shut off valve .... My understanding is that this valve should not open until you apply heat to the tube hanging out the side of it, as its designed to shut off if the flame goes out ( ) So .... anyone have a dead fridge that they might like to give up this part from to make another one live??? Its marked Teddington, Type TZ, made in England. Cheers Doug

I bought a van made in 1974. It has a M-R Astral fridge which "keeps things cold but the freezer doesn't freeze anything," according to it's last owner. I need to make sure it works properly on gas because out where I go there's no power apart from my generator. Before I touch it I need to see some kind of operators manual. There's no model number but it differs to the one on YouTube in that the freezer box is in the top left corner, one rack mid-way down, another beneath it, then at the bottom two ignition buttons on the left, a source knob next on the right, then a thermostat knob. Off to the right is a viewing hole for the gas. It has a picture of a flame next to it so I assume this is where one lights it. It has no lighting hole on the right but has a teardop-shaped metal flap on the back which obvious opens up the flame part, but cannot be accessed in service. Does anyone out there know what model this is apart from it's approximate year of manufacture, and can I get instructions for it? If not, are the instructions for older models applicable to burner servicing and so on?
